In any other kind of social/business arrangement he would be politely but firmly escorted out, possibly by security, for this kind of behavior. Being right or wrong is irrelevant.
orcdork··on The war to sell you a mattress
If there is a comparison that is unfair, it's the one you just made between physical and mental work.
orcdork··on The war to sell you a mattress
Yeah, and the whole web app industry is a scam, actual bandwidth cost is like a penny. And servers are even cheaper in Russia.

(Personally, I run my website on a shared php host for about $1)

Snarkiness aside, it's surprising to see comments like this here.

Being suspicious or cautious, particularly considering the amount of people expressing the same sentiment in the comments, is not a knee-jerk reaction.

It's interesting that I'm on exactly the other side - it seemed halfway interesting until I realized there's some kind of cryptocurrency involved (and only figured that out while reading this comment).

The org stuff looks interesting - the crypto stuff makes me more suspicious of it's present and future because of the possibility of a money grab.

Yeah, going through life using sociology / anthropology / psychology experiments as a moral compass sounds like something a well adjusted person would do.
orcdork··on In Search Of The Red Cross' $500M In Haiti Relief (2015)
I'm not sure what your issue is (and how it's connected with the op's claim that 99% of foreign aid is lost along the way to the people that need it).

But either way, from the graphic you linked it seems like on average, more than 75% of the money you give to these charities ends up being used for charitable activities, with the larger part of the remaining money used to raise more funds. Fundraisers on the high street are occasionally annoying, but I'd be extremely surprised if they are the largest drain on that remaining 25%, particularly compared to other efforts.

On a personal note, I have no major issue with them (except agreeing that they are often annoying), wouldn't change my opinion on foreign aid or charity over them and cant help but feel that anyone not donating because a percentage of their donation would go towards their salaries is looking for a convenient excuse rather than actual reason.

orcdork··on In Search Of The Red Cross' $500M In Haiti Relief (2015)
I'm not sure that true. As in - not true at all, unless you really want to believe it to be true.

No, 70% of foreign aid is not 'stolen off the top' http://www.politifact.com/global-news/statements/2017/jan/17...

How Much Aid is Really Lost to Corruption? https://www.cgdev.org/blog/how-much-aid-really-lost-corrupti...

Where does aid money really go -- and what is it spent on? http://edition.cnn.com/2013/10/09/opinion/where-does-aid-mon...

While there are large issues on the way foreign aid is distributed, including corruption and more recently local NGOs being sidelined, it's nowhere near close to your "perhaps $0.1" estimate of reaching locals. The idea that almost all the assistance is wasted is not only untrue, but harmful.

You don't pay your doctor $75 for sticking a needle in your arm, you pay him for his knowledge not to stick the needle in the wrong place.

Looks like we've got full circle considering this same logic was applied to devs for ages.

Can't help but wonder, would you call startup investors "pieces of trash" in the event of a bubble popping? What if they asked the government for assistance, would they be actual pieces of trash then?

What if it was the web devs requesting assistance, due to thousands being laid off when said bubble popped - would they be actual people made of refuse then?

You don't sound the least bit saddened, quite the opposite.

What about the possibility that if someone is being a douchebag, blaming their shitty behaviour on the "bad at social skills" strawman is not an excuse any more (or ever was).

orcdork··on Voten.co, a Real-Time Reddit Alternative Launches Public Beta
This is actually the worst an internet comment can be - no real insight, judgemental, thinly veiled insults and accusations, excusing bad ethics for business sense, bad tempered and rude. What new platforms need, is less of this.

I have no real horse in the race and am generally sceptical about reddit alternatives as the refuge of whoever gets banned on reddit, but hey, feel free to shit over other people's efforts!

I always wonder if people predicting the future also thought that the internet would be so casually rude.

orcdork··on Ask HN: Do you think there is an opportunity for a better alternative to Upwork?
The three tiers scheme sounds interesting, this way each dev would be paid according to their ability, and would be able to get work according to their needs. I think this could be a pretty revolutionary concept as far as work goes, and what's there to lose anyway?

Dear hackernews/reddit/socialmediathatsslightlyoffthemainstreamsoicanappearedgybutstillconnectwithmytargetdemographic

My name is Person McPerson. Here in MajorTechHubCity where there's so many work opportunities, i get so many work opportunities that it actually annoys me so much that I'll spend all of 30 seconds to write a blog post about getting so many work opportunity emails. Once, I was offered a job in a programming language that hasn't been mainstream for at least 4 months! That language was ruby for all those interested. Ruby! Don't make me spit out my own coffee in indignation. I obviously tracked down the person that wrote the email and gave them whatfor. Well, actually I just pressed the "I don't know this person" button.

It's a difficult life, and i hope you empathize with my plight. It really is, as the beatles put it, a hard day's night answering all these linkedin messages. I don't actually answer them though. That's for suckers. You're not some kind of ruby using sucker are you?

Sincerely yours, Person McPerson. (available for remote work, 3 days a week due to my digital nomad lifestyle, please email me)

That's great, but no. I can argue that they shouldn't break the law. The penalty is irrelevant.
orcdork··on The Uber Conflation
Good to know it's up to you to pick and choose which laws inconvenience you, I mean which laws are there to make those fat cats at the city office the big bucks.
orcdork··on The Uber Conflation
Sure, let's say that. Let's say I have, for all practical purposes, infinite money. And every single day I park outside your house, in a way that it blocks your parking garage. And I do that illegally, knowing it's illegal, and accepting the chance that I'll get fined, knowing that any fine has absolutely no consequence.

Is that morally wrong, in your eyes?

Uber has been consistently breaking the law (or parking into society's collective parking space, if the metaphor is lost). And your response is that they are wealthy enough right now to do it, so no big deal.

orcdork··on The Uber Conflation
You're advocating for wealth being over the law. I don't see how you can feel that this is not a big problem.
orcdork··on Facts about migration and crime in Sweden
Hah, what a joke.

Leif GW Persson is famous for writing books and being on tv shows - not for being a crime professor (and he is no longer a professor of criminology). There's a reason googling his name comes up with breitbart first, and goodreads second.

orcdork··on Facts about migration and crime in Sweden
That's a great excuse for making a semi-totalitarian government mouthpiece look like it's credible news.

That's a big list of credible, impartial news sources, like breitbart, youtube user in high standing "fryt", and the express.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel?
