orangepenguin··on Ask HN: I don't like my new job, now what?
Very good comments. What I failed to mention in my original post was that I feel that the discussions are really one-sided. My co-workers expect me to listen to and do everything they say, and don't want to hear any suggestions from me. I'm fine with other people considering my suggestions and then deciding against them. I'm not okay with coworkers who just reject my ideas because they came from the new guy.

I do think you're right about tolerating different personalities, and about talking to a manager. I'll tread carefully.

I really appreciate your feedback. I don't lack confidence, and happily accept constructive comments from my coworkers. The thing I'm having trouble with is my coworkers treating me like I'm inexperienced and untrained (both untrue). They want me to always trust everything they say without question, but don't want to give my suggestions any consideration. If I discover I'm wrong, I readily admit this and adopt the correct thinking. If they're wrong, they belittle me.

What I like about your comment is that it reminds me that I don't need to get bent out of shape about my coworkers problems. If they aren't good at accepting feedback, they're the ones who aren't learning and growing. I can just keep on progressing on my own until I find an opportunity to work somewhere with a more healthy environment.

There have been many comments that this is well presented? I think it's interesting, but mostly unreadable. The text over images is hard to read, and there are places where text is actually partially behind an image... not good.

I guess I'm not going to be productive today. stares in fascination
orangepenguin··on Show HN: Coward.js – Back off AJAX polling interval when something goes wrong
I know this is pretty small compared to many of the projects posted here. I'm just getting into Javascript and thought this would be useful in a lot of places. I'd love any feedback people have to give.

Probably should have posted this link: http://www.nasa.gov/feature/new-pluto-images-from-nasa-s-new...

Is that short or long scale tredecillion?
orangepenguin··on Three decades of the Commodore 64
Possibly my favorite part of the entire post comes from the comments at the bottom. Apparently some radio stations used to broadcast software--you'd just record it onto a tape and then load it with your C64 (or other computer with a tape drive)! What a fantastic world I missed out on by being born a decade late!
orangepenguin··on Wikipedia Down
I can't know the things. I think I might die.
orangepenguin··on Everything Sounds the Same When You’re Depressed
This is an interesting study. I've always had trouble understanding speech in anything but a quiet environment. Even the small amount of audio information lost in a phone conversation makes it hard for me to understand what people are saying. However, I don't think I'm depressed any more than the average person (we all have down days sometimes).

So, while depressed people seem to experience this kind of reduced speech comprehension, I wonder what other groups of people experience the same?

orangepenguin··on The Philosophy of Color Perception
That is a very interesting thought experiment. Thank you for introducing me to it!
orangepenguin··on The Philosophy of Color Perception
As mentioned in my comment, yes and no.

It still absorbs certain wavelengths of light to varying degrees, so yes for that definition of color.

It is not received by any light receptors and no creature holds a color perception of the tree. So no, for the second definition of color.

orangepenguin··on The Philosophy of Color Perception
I think that this article drastically over-complicates color. Color can be defined in two separate and distinct ways.

First, color is light in varying wavelengths and intensities.

Second, color is a perception in the mind of a creature with light receptors.

A tree falling in a forest without an observer is not black and white, because the lack of an observer does not change the wavelengths of light absorbed by the tree. The perception of color, however is dependent on the receiver. A creature with dichromatic vision has a different perception of colors than a trichomat or a tetrachromat.

This article makes color sound very confusing by not setting a clear scope at the beginning. The resulting ambiguity is the source of "philosophical discussion".

orangepenguin··on Robot captures glow inside Fukushima
Maybe I'm missing something here. Is the text referring to the yellow/green color that appears on the metal grate? I could be wrong, but that looks like the reflected light is just too bright for the camera, causing distorted output.

Was expecting some niche variation on RHEL.
