orangecoffee··on The ladder is missing rungs – Engineering Progression When AI Ate the Middle
The response I get offline is that there's millions of seniors right now that can last a couple decades.
orangecoffee··on The ladder is missing rungs – Engineering Progression When AI Ate the Middle
How much are you willing to pay? Is there any expectation of payoff?
orangecoffee··on Atlassian to cut roughly 1,600 jobs in pivot to AI
Dude, the time for work is going down drastically, about a third of before. Are you not facing it?
orangecoffee··on I don't know if my job will still exist in ten years
To give you the benefit of doubt - you're not paying attention. The 100$ claude account is profitable inference wise, and performs better than 80% of engineers with upto 5YOE. Architects I speak with want to delegate to this 100$ agent rather than 10000$ engineer.

It is absolutely more cost efficient. Junior engineers are done for.

orangecoffee··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
Sending you empathy. I think we have to get used to the lower pay expectation. This is the biggest negative, which does not make up for all of the AI's upsides.
orangecoffee··on AI is making junior devs useless
It does not exclude. But the expectation of larger money has to go. They're literally competing with 100 dollars a month.
orangecoffee··on AI is making junior devs useless
Your getting unnecessarily down voted by devs who want to feel morally superior, but don't have any concrete answer to the conundrum you've posed.

It's about money, and the actual solution would be to lower pay at senior level and give it to juniors, with some lock in agreed by the junior in exchange for this grace.

I doubt the vast majority will agree to this.

orangecoffee··on Open Source Endowment – new funding source for open source maintainers
What happened with Wikipedia? I thought they run a tight optimum ship?
orangecoffee··on Tech Firms Aren't Just Encouraging Their Workers to Use AI. They're Enforcing It
Is there not a higher productivity expectation for you? How are you going to meet those without agents?
orangecoffee··on What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism?
pi, openclaw, vinext, browser, ccc compiler, the scope is only growing.

Look for the claude icon in the trending GitHub repos https://github.com/trending. It's like on all of them.

It's hard. :( .. Those who are not accepting this are in cognitive dissonance.

orangecoffee··on What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism?
Ive been wondering as well and it seems acceptance is the only way. The evidence keeps piling with every successful larger and larger GitHub project we see
orangecoffee··on How we rebuilt Next.js with AI in one week
The money points hurts yes. We were worth 200 per hour, and as of yesterday were compared to bring 2 dollars per hour, and going down.

The thing is feeling bad or complaining about this does nothing. What else then? Acceptance?

orangecoffee··on Pi – A minimal terminal coding harness
This projects huge commit list proves this wrong :(
orangecoffee··on How we rebuilt Next.js with AI in one week
I think this framing is wrong. we have to learn to accept that it's not stealing. It's a new world where it's fair use and we don't know how to deal with it.

If we accept this then we can do something about it. Without it no one will heed us.

orangecoffee··on Pi – A minimal terminal coding harness
This matters less and less in the new world. that fact that a fully compatible 10x faster clone came up, and is continuously working and adapting/improving, tells you that this is hugely valuable. It has users and it's thriving.

Caring about taste in coding is past now. It's sad :( but also something to accept.

orangecoffee··on Minions: Stripe’s one-shot, end-to-end coding agents
Training falls outside of copyright concerns because of fair use, so proprietary or free is orthogonal. This is how the world is currently trending.
orangecoffee··on AI is not a coworker, it's an exoskeleton
This is incorrect. IN the older world, you would not say intelligence autocompleted code was not copyrightable. Agentic code is the same on steroids. The strong argument: It's absolutely auto completed code for the prompter, and hence fully copyright-able by them.
orangecoffee··on AI is not a coworker, it's an exoskeleton
Many did it for liberty - a philosophical position on freedom in software. They're supercharged with AI.
orangecoffee··on H-1B Exposed: Banking sector visa sponsorship investigation
Internships are these, and are getting longer. I'm also thinking this is what will stop the transfer of roles to another part of the world.

Of course using AI is a skill. But the effort needed to get there is becoming lower and lower.

orangecoffee··on H-1B Exposed: Banking sector visa sponsorship investigation
The solution is simple, but unpalatable to us. With AI, SWE-1 becomes a minimum wage job, with SWE2 (1.5X), SWE3 (2X) and SWE4 (3x). With such a rationalization we will retain more of the work here, or this will move. Government policies cannot control this as it will mean losing tech hegemony.

Is it worth taking a hit on higher compensation for longer term peace of mind?

orangecoffee··on I started programming when I was 7. I'm 50 now and the thing I loved has changed
If we're honest - you are not being stopped from mentoring developers. You're saying you'd want to do it on time paid for by others, and competing with teams not doing that.

So the actual pain point is compensation, and IMO we should directly call that out and address it.

orangecoffee··on Monosketch
But it's not open, and can't be edited by those who want to. We should always support FOSS.
orangecoffee··on ASK HN: Postman removes free team collaboration (small teams capped at 1 user)
You can call out that you're an APIdog employee. Even better stop astroturfing.
orangecoffee··on In the AI gold rush, tech firms are embracing 72-hour weeks
That's not the widespread change I'm seeing. The actual widespread change I'm seeing is the deep, overt and silent change in the expectations of productivity. Some of us are reaching out skill ceiling, and some others are finding wind under their wings. Sad about the former.
orangecoffee··on Claude’s C Compiler vs. GCC
Indeed, it's the Overton window that has moved. Which is why I secretly think the pro-AI side is more right than the anti-AI side. Makes me sad.
