opless··on Sometimes, requiring explanability is counterproductive
No. I'm natural general intelligence with no safety features. One that has a hallucinationary view of the world an a neural architecture tracing back a couple of hundred of millions of years that continuously learns and has redundant features, and has the ability of self reflection.

We're talking about algorithms that are based on a simplified neural architecture, no redundancy, no self reflection and are still quite immature.

Nevertheless we're being asked to trust a black box AI, that you cannot interrogate?

Yes, of course, what's the worst that can happen?

I think your insight is a perfect description of humans authority bias.

People love to be told what to do. Even if in the face of overwhelming real world evidence people blindly follow their GPS, and to ignore it can cause a lot of stress.

I disagree with LeCun but you have a good point. Telling you how much uncertainty there is in a result is a useful metric. But it is only part of what is required (by my definition of explainability).

My counterpoint is when a model trained on dog breeds misidentifies a breed with a high certainty factor, the model should be able to justify (explain) why it made that judgement.

opless··on Sometimes, requiring explanability is counterproductive
Lack of explainability is not a bug, it's a wholly missing feature.

There are a whole set of mathematical functions that are beyond the range of a typical human mind to understand. But there are proofs that exist that explain how they are correct.

I don't think it's a big ask for a new model to be able to justify its own determinations.

Of course, that makes things slightly more difficult for all those in research and those selling snake oil and everyone in between. But that's what the difference between science and alchemy is isn't it?

I challenged LeCun about explain-ability of neural nets a few years ago, he seemed to dismissed the need for it. As I recall his explanation was that the weights & configuration of the neural net is enough to give you an equation which is explanation enough. I'd link the post but it seems to have disappeared.

LeCun is also heavily biased against Bayes.

opless··on Not everyone has an internal monologue
I had an experience similar to you, but after a nasty bump on the head.

In my concussed state, all my trains of though, critics, and general random thoughts all stopped. It was like a holiday.

:-)

Oh. My.

This!!!

opless··on Ask HN: What are some interesting projects to reuse your old devices?
Thanks! Though they seem to be x430s rather than the X230s :/

opless··on Police begin operational use of live facial recognition technology in London
Possibly Theresa May, whose husband was involved with a private security company which whilst she was in the home office was the prime candidate for a private police force project

It turned out he didn't own shares in G4S however

opless··on Gravity: We might have been getting it wrong
It's grey because someone in their infinite wisdom downvoted you.

Most likely because they'd rather downvote rather than challenge your statement. It's a worrying trend.

opless··on Apple may have to abandon Lightning connector cable
I've almost completely moved to Qi charging my phone.

Oddly it took a while for me to find an in car CD mount type, as most of them are air vent types.

opless··on DEA seized father’s life savings at airport without alleging any crime occurred
That's a very ostrich attitude to the problem though.

Allowing toxic behaviour to persist and shutting down discussion of the problem.

I'm just wondering why pointing out a flaw, that I'm grateful if someone answering, which is ultimately useful for the community as a whole gets downvoted.

Downvoting doesn't give any feedback to the poster what they did wrong. I'm all for good feedback, shutting down that discussion does greater damage in a meritocracy IMHO

Sigh

Hmm. Can someone alter the title to refer to: Cambridge MA, please?

Otherwise folk will assume it might be the UK one ;)

Last time I put a link on here I was downvoted. So Im not doing that again.

There's an ISO for a Windows (95?) based SDK floating about. It possibly is the very same CD that you mention.

I agree. I just forget occasionally.

opless··on Oracle copied Amazon’s API – was that copyright infringement?
Maybe it does?

A causal reader might not be aware of how hypocritical certain operators are in the IT space and are reading this for the first time.

Just because it's obvious TO YOU doesn't mean it's obvious to everyone.

Though I do agree that lots of "because they're evil" comments do not add to the discussion.

Personally I think downvoting should be done carefully and not because the downvoter disagrees with the comment.

opless··on Exploiting Wi-Fi Stack on Tesla Model S
What's worse is they are very resistant to change.

Think Banks and Windows XP. Except without Microsoft drawing a line in the sand and saying that they're no longer offering even paid support for it.

If the change doesn't bring in value for the shareholders (or business) there will be no change.
