opencl··on Jak 2 Playable with OpenGOAL
That change seems like it would be pretty straightforward to implement in the input handling code of an emulator.
opencl··on Blender 3.6 LTS Released
Those open source kernel modules are not usable in any practical sense for consumer hardware in their current state.

From the repo readme[1], "GeForce and Workstation support is still considered alpha-quality."

opencl··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
There's a manual override to open it from the inside, the only way to open it from the outside in that situation is to recharge the 12V battery.

There are also terminals accessible from the front to power the electronic hood latch from an external 12V source to access the battery.

opencl··on Show HN: RISC-V core written in 600 lines of C89
The base instruction set is tiny but there are quite a few extensions and pretty much every practical implementation includes at least a few of them.

i.e. the GD32V microcontrollers implement RV32IMAC, Allwinner D1 which is a "full-blown" CPU meant to run Linux implements RV64IMAFDCVU.

RV32I/RV64I are the base 32/64 bit integer instruction sets and every letter after that is a different extension. Most of the extensions are relatively small and simple, but the C (compressed instructions) extension introduces some decoder complexity and the V (vector) extension adds several hundred instructions.

Though even with all the extensions it is still a very small/simple ISA by modern standards.

opencl··on 1000W 12V –> 220V Inverter
The acquisition was a pretty long time ago but the prominent Autodesk branding at the top of the page is relatively recent.
opencl··on Repairing a tiny ribbon cable inside a 28 year old IBM ThinkPad 701c
The kernel itself is still fine on 486s and there are a couple of distros that should still technically work. Obviously nothing 'full fledged' is going to fit in the RAM on the thing or run at any sort of reasonable speed.

Gentoo is probably the easiest mainstream distro to get running just because you can fiddle with all the compiler flags and kernel options. A few people have also put together small custom images with modern kernels for this class of hardware.

opencl··on PC CPU Shipments See Steepest Decline in 30 Years
At least for now AMD doesn't have anything ARM. There are ARM systems available but nothing anywhere close to that price range.

The Honeycomb LX2 is probably the closest thing to that currently, but it launched for $750 and has since gone up to around $920. Performance is not remotely competitive with x86 systems at that price point.

There are some systems based on the Ampere Altra chips, but nobody sells the motherboards/CPUs on their own and a full system will run you at least ~$6000.

opencl··on Update on Samsung SSD Reliability
Hardware ECC Recovered represents the amount of time between error correction events, so a higher number is better.
opencl··on Show HN: Terra Firma, a playable erosion simulation
Very neat simulation.

As a note, you said it requires a dedicated graphics card but it does seem to work fine on my laptop's integrated graphics (AMD 4500U) and performance was good with at least the default map size.

opencl··on Fallacies about RISC-V
SPARC has been "open" for several decades at this point.

All of the ISA specifications are freely available[1] and you can buy a license to manufacture SPARC hardware for $99.

opencl··on Open source USB C camera with C mount lens, MIPI Sensor, Lattice FPGA, USB 3.0
You can buy an IMX477 board with CSI output and a CSI->USB board, ~$100 combined.

Not quite a fully assembled solution but all you have to do is screw the two boards together with a few standoffs.

opencl··on LeanQt – GUI is here, Widgets are near
It's just normal Qt with a bunch of features removed. Modifying one of the existing Python Qt bindings to build against this should be relatively straightforward.
opencl··on Cache Associativity
The direct mapped cache graph is just showing that each cache line is mapped to multiple addresses.

So in that direct mapped example blocks 0, 64, and 256 are all mapped to cache line 0, and you can only have one of them in cache at any given moment. If block 0 is in cache and block 256 gets accessed, block 0 will be evicted from cache because block 256 will replace it in cache line 0.

opencl··on Pixar almost deleted Toy Story 2 (2012)
You can buy an extra storage device and swap them out (either physically or swapping the boot order), as long as your workstation doesn't have soldered in storage.
opencl··on We're moving away from swap partitions on our Linux servers
Not having quite enough RAM is the exact scenario when swap on ZRAM is most useful. Assuming the data you have in RAM is compressible it lets you use a few extra gigabytes before hitting disk swap or OOM (depending on if you have a disk swap device configured in addition to ZRAM).

Zswap is somewhat similar and might also work well for you, it uses disk swap but with a compressed cache in RAM.

opencl··on Who Makes Ridgid Tools?
If you look at the lower end brands, they're often all selling near-identical licensed products regardless of parent company. The higher end brands are usually actually different from each other.
opencl··on SSD will fail at 40k power-on hours (2021)
This will not affect your laptop, all of the models affected by this are enterprise SAS SSDs.

Of course your SSD might have some other firmware bug that would eat your data, all you can do is search for the model number and see if the manufacturer has issued any notices/firmware updates.

opencl··on Build a PinePhone App with Zig and Zgt
You can use any technology you want that runs on ARM Linux for the Pinephone.

But the hardware is very slow compared to pretty much any other modern phone, you will struggle to get decent performance from web technology.

opencl··on How professional golf arrived at its breaking point
Because PGA won't let them.
opencl··on Ask HN: Is there a TV on the market without “Smart TV” features?
I have never seen a TV that doesn't have the prop 65 warning and would be shocked if any exist.
opencl··on Jeffrey Snower was originally demoted over PowerShell
The region is Seattle, I don't think there was a lack of other options if he really wanted to leave.
opencl··on Base 2048
The 140 byte limit actually didn't last very long, it was 140 Unicode code points since at least a decade ago. You could use 140 CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) characters or 140 emojis, and if it didn't fit in an SMS they just sent a link to the tweet.

Interestingly when they doubled the character limit they also started double counting CJK characters so the limit is still effectively 140 for those languages.

opencl··on The PalmOS powered wristwatch from Fossil
I have a Bip and absolutely do not trust Amazfit with my data, which is fine because I don't use their app.

I use the open source Gadgetbridge app instead and it works well: https://gadgetbridge.org/

opencl··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
That's the gasoline version of the Spark. The EV version was considerably less popular.

This article from when it was discontinued says the entire production run was 7400 units.

opencl··on Arbitrary file write vulnerability in GNU gzip's zgrep utility
It's for searching inside of compressed files, and does this by decompressing to a temporary directory.
opencl··on The case for LineageOS and the PinePhone
You can install your own firmware on the Pinephone modem.

opencl··on Hero 2.0, an ultra-low cost 3D-printed robotics platform
The software stack for this robot is based on ROS, and there is an existing Scratch extension to connect with ROS[1]. You'd have to write some additional code specific to this robot but it should be doable using that project as a starting point.

opencl··on FAA, do your damn job
The largest result in the avgas paper, for children living within 500m of an airport, put their lead levels at 0.043 micrograms/dl higher than the general population.

From this paper[1], "An increase in blood lead from 10 to 20 micrograms/dl was associated with a decrease of 2.6 IQ points". So while there is an impact on lead levels, it is not nearly large enough to lead to the loss of 1-2 IQ points.

I'm not saying we shouldn't get rid of leaded avgas, but it accounts for about 0.1% of gasoline used in the US so the impact will be much smaller than banning leaded fuel for cars was.

opencl··on Microsoft Azure Adds Ampere Altra Arm CPUs
Not available quite yet, but several companies have recently announced RK3588 based systems that are something of a middle ground between the existing options. Up to 16GB RAM and somewhat higher CPU performance than the Pi for $100-300ish depending on the board and RAM amount.
