IF @AOC were a man, she'd be covered like young Obama. She is a visionary politician, an inspiring orator and a sharp tactician. Instead we get "building her own brand". Women are invariably described with the lower-status version of their skills. https://twitter.com/AnnOlivarius/status/1286696696639041539?...
onyva··on Machu Picchu was purposely built on intersecting fault lines: research (2019)
Hyperbole. The right’s favorite pass time. Also, thinking their grasp of the English language is great. Ie trump being a perfect example.

This is about language though. Eurocentrism is about making everything relative to what the west thinks, even when it’s “understanding” is very limited. Like going to explore other cultures and reporting back with authority when there’s plenty of local expertise that should be sourced.

Take the theory of decline of the Ottoman Empire as an example to this type of anti-intellectualism, but there so many mistakes to learn from.

onyva··on Machu Picchu was purposely built on intersecting fault lines: research (2019)
>> It was discovered by western science in 1911, when Yale professor Hiram Bingham III was tipped off to its existence by locals and led to the site, then overgrown with vegetation.

So... it wasn’t “discovered” by western science if it was known to locals all along... why not simply state that western scientist learned or were aided by locals into the site?

onyva··on Twitter bans 7k QAnon accounts, limits 150k others as part of broad crackdown
Good “first” step. Thing is in a time of public health crisis misinformation is not something we need to put up with. It’s should be blocked, not just not propagate. Social media has indeed become a public health problem.
onyva··on Paul Graham retweeted and liked Trump's tweet with phrase “China Virus”
Really? Thanks for xenoplaining. Who’s talking about canceling anyways? I understand this is the right’s new favorite meme at the moment (since they got tired with excusing xenophobia and racism with complaining about political correctness), but like the other commentator said, it’s disappointing. Maybe it’s about time people stop treating Drumpf as a toddler and see him for what he really is: a dangerous unhinged sociopath.
onyva··on Paul Graham retweeted and liked Trump's tweet with phrase “China Virus”
Hmm... what if trump said the “Jewish virus” like other Neo Nazis, in Germany, are now suggesting? Would that be too much for you?

Come on. This is just another One of these articles that have something in the title and then seem to somehow randomly get to Brave (affiliates?). Firefox has excellent tracking and privacy control features both on desktop and mobile, before you even install ad blockers. Brave is a privacy risk, not a solution, as shown recently and was perceived from the start.

onyva··on Google Search Upgrades Make It Harder for Websites to Win Traffic
I didn’t see that. That’s worrying. A y idea if they’re related to Brave, by any chance?
onyva··on Google Search Upgrades Make It Harder for Websites to Win Traffic
Give runnaroo a try. I’ve made if the default search engine everywhere. It’s really that good and they make it possible to enjoy the web again as well as reach relevant content instantly.
onyva··on How HEY made us care about their email service
Had a look at the pricing and that was it. No amount of marketing can justify the outrageous yearly charge, even though it’s a nice product which like Apple products sacrifices functionality in the name of simplicity. Problem is as with Apple, people stick to what they know. I’ve shown this to one of my non techie friends and they absolutely hated it. Suggesting to give it a try, the answer was what’s the point? No one’s gonna pay more to get a lot less, and hey offers far less even if your buy the marketing story. Feed or paper trail is not something many can live with.

Yes. Over due in fact. Also, zuckerbeurger needs to pack for The Hague to stand before the ICC for Facebook’s facilitating role in the genocide of the Rohingya.

I liked the “could”... i assume it was sarcasm.
onyva··on Show HN: Runnaroo – A new search engine
That would be number one on my list too. I normally skip but it can be endless until you got to a result that looks authentic and not some needy click farm.
onyva··on Show HN: Runnaroo – A new search engine
I was quite impressed from what I’ve seen so far. The most frustrating thing about google how unreliable/irrelevant the results are when your query has anything to to with something that can be payed for, you get immediately spammed by low quality commercial bs, while ddg is practically useless for very specific searches I.e an error message in an app etc.
onyva··on Show HN: Thinker App – Automate Your Information Intake
Imho it needs to be native to feel nice to use. It feels 100% web view and doesn’t look very slick. Ie. At minimum swipe back and forth in the article stream. Right now it reveals the side bar, which is painful.
onyva··on Build Your Own Adblocker in (Literally) 10 Minutes
Mostly ethical. If you care about privacy and not just a software junkie looking for the next shiny new thing, you should care about who is behind its development. Mozilla is not the same thing as another X company building Y browser. Specifically though, they have a conflict interest. A good starting point to understand their position in the market:

Brave browser (Stage 1) is a Trojan Horse for their actual business which is a blockchain-based advertising platform (Stage 2).

onyva··on Kosher search engine powered by 4 car batteries on a passively cooled server
Also nothing to do with "Judaism", rather more of the ludicrousness of Eastern European rabbinical orthodoxy holier than though attitude that made them the most hated social group in Israel, mostly due to their blatant hypocrisy (i.e. object the legalization of prostitution in Israel, while they are the largest beneficiaries of it by percentage). Sort of kidnapped and suffocated to the death the essence of Judaism and reduced it into a cult.
onyva··on Build Your Own Adblocker in (Literally) 10 Minutes
I love it that they’re so worried about privacy they build an extension, but still use Brave, which is a real world example of a MitB, which is also aiming to become the new ads broker to put google out of business.
onyva··on Show HN: Pugmark – The online book club for developers
Like the idea, though I think hypotes.is might be a more familiar way of social reading, albeit for academics.

Just a thought, if it’s even legally possible, or people a in fact still read print, add an option to send each other your copy when done... and save the planet on the way... perhaps a book for a book.

onyva··on Why Big Tech Is More Competent Than the US Government
Not only. Neoliberals have been busy striping government of its most basic functions, and lobbyists for said tech firms are the the ones that push for lowering taxes and deregulating. So yes, they won. Bigly. But not based on merit. Silicon Valley is not producing anything valuable.
onyva··on Zuckerberg: advertisers will be back to Facebook 'soon enough'
It’ll continue beyond July. This quote may have changed everything. If he’s trying to become the silicon trump he is certainly getting there. Unsurprisingly both are clearly sociopaths.
onyva··on Why did it take so long for Reddit and Facebook to block racist groups?
>> Banning words you don't like won't change these people.

That’s hardly the issue. The issue is the megaphone they’re given, and more importantly, being able to air their shit in public which would not be possible otherwise, or not that effective. Without going into the legalities and liability of publishers to begin with.

onyva··on Is fiat money to blame for the Iraq war, police brutality, and the war on drugs?
Shouldn’t we call it The USA war on Iraq, or the USA invasion of Iraq etc? It is a war the USA and its allies started on false pretense after all. The attacker is the USA the victims are Iraqis, not the other way around. Same goes for many other wars the USA started of course, for which we are all paying the price.
onyva··on Nextdoor CEO Takes Blame for Deleting of Black Lives Matter Posts

>> The Arabic language is one of the most important language among all Muslim countries due to the Quran and Islam.

Is there anybody quality checking anything on the app store? That’s literally embarrassing copy to put anywhere, and it’s not because of language skills.

Also doubtful written by an Arab speaker.

Also, comments are totally manufactured spam judging by their content.

Also, names in user reviews are clearly randomly generated.
