onphonenow··on Ftx.com Has Probably Collapsed
No kidding - get into x coin or y coin - it’s mostly pump and dump meme speculation with no dcf model worth anything
onphonenow··on How the US can stop wasting billions of dollars on each transit project
If you travel internationally you quickly realize all the excuses for why things take so long are just that. Be curious how long Tesla would take to build a huge full factory in China. In ca the permitting alone is on the order of years.
onphonenow··on How the US can stop wasting billions of dollars on each transit project
Watch McDonald’s put up a restaurant.

I went to school and they changed zoning along this big road where I lived. When I can back from winter break it was unrecognizable and the stores were open.

Now in CA - voted for high speed rail and was absolutely promised it would not go over budget. The first contractor quit in disgust SNCF and started doing projects in Africa saying they were less dysfunctional :)

Most recent audit committee reports are that everything is on track. We will see

One argument on ballot was 10 years of planning went into project before ballot - so starting 1998 or so - 24 years later now

onphonenow··on Musk orders Twitter to cut infrastructure costs by $1B
Uhh - how do you “auto scale” data centers? Twitter is not on aws
onphonenow··on Businesses are incentivized to have auto-delete policies for email
We auto delete. It’s based on the assumption someones email will get hacked - reduces the surface area of the attack.
onphonenow··on Audiobooks on Spotify
We have regulations. If you think the cops enforce spam calls and texts, think again. Or the millions of scam calls and other blatant internet fraud.

I don’t get iMessage spam. Period. That alone is valuable. Politicians who make these regulations continue to spam me and there is no way to block them with a do not call list.

Apple is so valuable in part because they do enforce some rules.

onphonenow··on Audiobooks on Spotify
Then choose a different phone.

Apple clout let’s it literally force companies to allow easy subscription cancellation because apple handles it. I never have to worry.

Then they can force apps not to cross track (sorry Facebook)

onphonenow··on Texas Natural Gas Drops Toward Zero as Output Swamps Pipelines
Natural gas is worth a ton still.

Biden et al doing what they can to block natural gas infrastructure- so we get weird islands like this in price. The arbitrage differential (if you could actually build) is mind boggling.

Not sure any quick solution so not sure why this is on HN

onphonenow··on Car feature subscriptions should be illegal, New Jersey Legislators say
I was looking forward to trying out Tesla fsd as a subscription item for a month. Being forced to pay 12,000 is stupid for a feature I’m not sure works or I’d use
onphonenow··on Behind TikTok's boom: A legion of traumatized, $10-a-day content moderators
This is I think false - the will to prosecute by authorities is often low. Almost every online platform has great evidence of various frauds and crime. I heard Facebook reports 20 million images or more PER YEAR. I’ve had a few experiences. In one someone was cashing bogus checks and we got them to provide the account they’d been asked to deposit them to. There was zero interest in taking a report or looking at whose account that was (person in org who’d been cutting the checks stopped showing up and we were pretty sure was involved). Endless card fraud on tape at merchants- again crickets.
onphonenow··on Show HN: Contact Form Delivery
Many Wordpress plugins have lite and paid versions - and often do a bad job around spam etc
onphonenow··on Hyundai investigating child labor in its U.S. supply chain
I did a paper route and opened a store before school. I loved the work - the above is crazy talk. Plenty of kids delivered papers near me. Now I make mid 6 figures. I learned a ton opening that store that has served me through life even though the actual work is totally different.
onphonenow··on American Airlines is trying to stop a popular app used by flight attendants
All the rulings here have enforced employers rights to their data. The google engineer using their login to scrape users private emails and then running it through a third party platform would be fired.
onphonenow··on American Airlines is trying to stop a popular app used by flight attendants
If it’s your employers you do

If it’s an app on apples App Store you do

onphonenow··on Google engineers joked about how incognito mode isn't incognito
Uhh - every tab I open in incognito warns me my activity is still visible to my isp my workplace and the sites I interact with.

Journalism really is pretty dead these days - tell us something we don’t know

onphonenow··on Discovering Azure's unannounced breaking change with Cosmos DB
I liked simpleDB. They kept on supporting it beyond my expectations even after lots of other options were available and it was long depreciated. Curious what the disaster was.
onphonenow··on Walgreens Turns to Prescription-Filling Robots to Free Up Pharmacists
Alert fatigue is real and sets in quickly -
onphonenow··on AWS vs. GCP reliability is wildly different
If you want that promise you can reserve capacity in various ways. Google has reservations. Folks use this for DR, your org can get a pool of shared ones going if you are going to have various teams leaning on GPU etc.

The promise of the cloud is that you can flexibly spin up machines if available, and easily spin down, no long term contracts or CapEx etc. They are all pretty clear that there are capacity limits under the hood (and your account likely has various limits on it as a result).

onphonenow··on Ask HN: Any way to deactivate your Hacker News account?
What does KF have to do with HN?
onphonenow··on Samsung Loses a Ton of User Data – Offers Nothing to Victims
They want location settings on for smarthings too even though I don't want to be tracked all the time
onphonenow··on Google cracks down on VPN based adblockers
I had to laugh at the no one can see what you are doing claim. How do these scammers route the traffic if they can’t see what websites you are visiting! Of course these guys can see what websites you are visiting if they want to
onphonenow··on NASA Artemis I Launch
It’s fun to see nasa “facts” vs others. The nasa “countdowns” are comically unreliable - when you get to x minutes left in the countdown there are NOT x minutes left. They should just call their stuff phases.

Listening to nasa administrator Nelson go on about how effective SLS is - also a bit mind warping. On what measure?

The Biden admin has some bug going on about spaceX - Kathy got demoted / sidelined a bit at NASA after doing commercial crew - she or many others in nasa far better administrators. Instead we get sn old white guy Nelson - and I’m an old white guy. His claim to fame is sls support. Ugh

onphonenow··on Amazon, Verizon found using IPv4 240/4 addresses
I chased ipv6 hard for a while. Concluded not worth it. Do a fan of proposals to inch up address space in various ways
onphonenow··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
AWS has never raised prices on me.
onphonenow··on Retool raises $45M at a $3.2B valuation
I'll check it out again myself if there is a useable free plan! We are paying 20k per year for some apps we got hooked on for free - nothing beats actully trying product and I'm often so busy it takes 45 days to get back to something
onphonenow··on TikTok and the Fall of the Social-Media Giants
TikTok is pretty diverse. I get zero view / like videos. Facebook got tiring all anyone did was call out / be offended / be outraged. Nothing fun anymore . TikTok has a surprising amount of fun stuff.
onphonenow··on Hispaniola's great divergence
Zimbabwe had a similar land redistribution- went from breadbasket to a tough spot
onphonenow··on Hispaniola's great divergence
It’s not clear they fell behind during the debt period. The timing is off isn’t it. They fell behind later

Aren’t there other crazy divergences out there? Singapore and mylasia or something?

onphonenow··on Jurassic Cloud
Same - aws I think uses by default for the same reason
onphonenow··on Cooling related failure (in Google London DC)
That’s pretty terrible!
