Yes I could use docker in various ways - I use docker for most app deploys. But but but - if you’ve been down the rabbit hole of scaling a database - or backing up, updating, securing etc its a no brainer - and aws let’s you start small

If they hadn’t extended there was talk of actually forking python. Basically people needed a 2.x compatible python, and most features being put into 3 could have been backported. So you’d maybe keep u””, keep print, add futures stuff for folks targeting both and then pull in 3 stuff to reduce pressure to move. They were smart not to drop 2 cold.

Right. I think a key miss was underestimating value of code that would work w both 2 and 3. This avoids need to upgrade all at once.

Relax things a tiny bit in 3, back port to 2 via futures, get a library like six going. It could have been a ton easier.

Folks using u”” were already being careful with Unicode . Supposedly Unicode was important enough for 3 to default to it.

This is totally false - code produced by 2to3 no longer ran on 2. So you ended up w a chicken and egg problem. Things like u would allow folks to keep compatibility with 2 while working in 3.

The python maintainers went out of their way to break things - and were smug about it. That’s what it felt like to the community.

A big part of 3 was Unicode strings. In 2 you could mark a string as Unicode with a u””. This would have been a great way to let libraries and code work with both 2 and 3. They banned this, but you had to still use b””. This was the attitude and just one example.

The list of stuff that got hard / slow was long. Migration path was unnecessarily difficult as was compatible code. Somewhere around 3.4 it was like a light switch flipped and they started being more reasonable. ASCII handling improved (yes, not all internet protocol stuff is Unicode), they began making it easier to target 2/3 etc. but it was horrible to start. I’ve thankfully forgotten some of the details :)

But even then the price wouldn’t make sense right? I mean - regardless of unit confusion, didn’t they have to at some point calculate a price per unit themselves ? At that point the error would be pretty clear no? I can’t think of a combination of unit confusion that results in a normal price

What’s funny is echo from Amazon works great for your google workspace account! Google has improved the situation but for like 6 years the mind boggled - so busy chasing big ai stuff, so little attention to customer stuff - the threads on this were thousands long - and that’s just the folks who could even figure out where to complain. And google workspace users are PAYING!!

I pay for dev support on aws and have had good support on Amazon retail as well. They can actually solve issues. I think Amazon retail credited me a very expensive purchase not because they could see the screwup their side but could understand what might have happened and maybe looked at my insanely long purchase history with virtually no returns and just made a call on the issue. Aws dev support should stick to scope - I do think some folks get way outside AWS specific stuff and into user solution configuration error stuff

I’ve heard people following this advice really regret it because they don’t realize how much ties to google. Please make sure folks you are advising understand this.

This is what I don’t get about google. I was all in on their ecosystem but then things like google speakers not working with google work calendars despite thousands of requests for 5 plus years. Meanwhile Amazon added feature to echo quickly. Then stuff like this, they just do not care / have any kind of a customer focus

As an active library user w a 4 year old and 1 year old going to the bathroom at the sf library wasn’t a good situation- so for many folks (disabled, those w young children) the library was not available to them.

Also now elsewhere and going to library is so fun. We can bike etc. they are reasonably strict though. No sex, drugs, sleeping etc

That’s a risk. I pay for my account to try and mitigate this risk so I’m the actual customer, not advertisers.

Google workspaces has a support assisted recovery option. I host dns separately from google as their admin level recovery may require some dns signaling.

Other steps include a yubikey etc . I’ve actually had the experience of losing all my Authenticator codes on an iPhone upgrade which at the time was how I did 2fa - so had to go through recovery for many providers. My top takeaway - if I was paying for service it was possible if sometimes a bit time consuming. If I wasn’t it was hit or miss.

Other tip? Google Authenticator may not backup to iCloud!! I had 20 codes in it including some really hard to fix ones.

I do passwordsafe on google drive. I feel google does a good job w security / main risk a computer I’m using getting compromised

Just mixing in salads with some protein I love doing. We grow lettuce- you can dress it and then spend time chatting and crunching lettuce. It passes the time. No idea if it’s actually low calorie but a lot of roughage may help you move stuff out too?

Other factors in fairness are kids and medical stuff. I spent 3k fixing up a wonderful 3.5k used car - have had it for years - runs great even though 16 years old. I do want / need to buy a new car but prices seem crazy to me! Kia soul maybe as a cheap car? Everything else has puffed up to high 20s and 30s (and far far higher) - this old car costs nothing to insure - and Kia seems to have waiting lists around the block for warranty work. My old car I can have anyone work in it without warranty issues.

It made me wonder if all the required features and electronics are puffing up costs a bit?

Ideas for folks who want to be active in parents lives.

Try to live close by. Free childcare when they are healthy. Even just weekly visits in assisted living w kids occasionally is game changing for parents quality of life.

Go big early on accessibility at home. Grab bars, walk in showers , shower bench etc etc . They will get used eventually.

Same with in home support. Try to get a relationship going w someone or agency early while parents have agency. One day a week, pay for something pt even etc. Can take going through a few to find a fit - some will be horrible and just after discharge not a great time to be sorting this all out. Just being in system for support can be a big win on things like hospital discharge.

Lots of challenges in all of this, but societal factors (living far away, work life balance etc) are a part of this, not just medical system.

A big issue medical system side are basically absent family who only show up for end of life. A lot of folks threatening lawsuits etc. Few folks willing to pay much to make anything better - lots of asset transfer games. It’s usually but not always the most absent family members who get the most upset at those who are helping toilet someone etc. This has nothing to do with OPs point except there is frustration on both sides , and folks living far from family and/or being heavily into the rat race may be a contributor as the med system try’s substituting for large tight knit family and social structures that have been diminished
