only-one1701··on AGENTS.md outperforms skills in our agent evals
This drives me absolutely crazy. Non-falsifiable and non-deterministic results. All of this stuff is (at best) anecdotes and vibes being presented as science and engineering.

I was going to reply to the post above but you said it perfectly.

Without phones, we couldn’t talk to people across great distances (oversimplification but you get it).

Without Generative AI, we couldn’t…?

Perhaps you’ve heard that the purpose of a system is what it does?
only-one1701··on Threads edges out X in daily mobile users, new data shows
Logically, there are only two possibilities here: everyone else is wrong about what qualifies as “far left propaganda” or you are.

only-one1701··on Cursor's latest “browser experiment” implied success without evidence
Wishful thinking. They’re trying to (and maybe successfully) doing a military-industrial complex style thing with AI.

I’d advise folks to consider a) the relationship between poverty, stress, and obesity Nd b) the income inequality of the United States relative to Germany
only-one1701··on Show HN: I used Claude Code to discover connections between 100 books
lol yes that’s the only reason anyone could find this uh literary analysis less than compelling
only-one1701··on Show HN: I used Claude Code to discover connections between 100 books
That doesn’t speak well towards your literary education, candidly.
only-one1701··on Show HN: I used Claude Code to discover connections between 100 books
I'm really not trying to be mean, but one of the things we learn in the humanities is that basically any two texts can be connected via extremely broad statements (e.g. "Perfect is the enemy of the good"). This is like the joke on twitter about how every couple of years someone in tech invents the concept of public transportation.

B-b-but what if someone uses the weights and training code to train their own models!!

Just tax non primary residences at a much higher rate. Housing crisis solved.

I thought that "A Website to Destroy All Websites" as a bit precious but like this for the "I'm feeling lucky" logic alone. The author is right. The internet was good and now, I'm sorry to say, sucks. I'm worried something's gone for good.

only-one1701··on UK accounting body to halt remote exams amid AI cheating
I remember reading something when I was studying for AWS certs (might’ve been from AWS itself): the goal of the certifying bodies is to make as much money as possible. For this to happen, the exam can’t be so hard that nobody takes it, but it can’t be so easy that everyone takes it and it loses its value.

Organizations have been coasting on their pre-Covid reputations for a while. Now it’s time for them to adjust the slider the other way.

only-one1701··on Replacing JavaScript with Just HTML
Something I keep thinking about when I consider the trade-offs between building a site with HTML/CSS wherever possible vs JS is what the actual _experience_ of writing and maintaining HTML/CSS is vs JS. JS gets knocked around a bunch compared to "real" languages (although less so in recent years), but at the end of the day, it's a programming language. You can write a loop in it.

Writing a web server in C++ is a way to get excellent performance. So why don't most people do it?

only-one1701··on Building an AI agent inside a 7-year-old Rails monolith
I'm not saying it's "good", I'm just saying that it's worth a qualitative consideration of what it _means_ that this incorrect statement is so persistent beyond "not true, STFU"
only-one1701··on Building an AI agent inside a 7-year-old Rails monolith
For what it’s worth: yes, it’s not technically true, but the reason it’s sticking around is because it conveys a deeply felt (and actually true) sentiment that many many people have: the output of generative AI isn’t worth the input.
only-one1701··on Salesforce regrets firing 4000 experienced staff and replacing them with AI
This is the opposite of both what the article is saying, and reality
only-one1701··on Coarse is better
I would never argue that a painting of a car crash couldn’t be art. It’s funny your bringing up that a camera is a tool for creating art; I also hold photographic art in lower esteem than other kinds of visual art (though I still think some kind of photography can be art).

At a certain point, we need to be realistic about the amount of effort involved in artistic creation. Here’s a thought experiment: someone puts two paintings in a photocopier and makes a single sheet of paper with both paintings. Did that person create art? They certainly had the vision to put those two specific paintings together, and they used a tool to create that vision in reality!

only-one1701··on Coarse is better
Bad code is still code. A painting of code is not code.

People are aren’t entitled to get entry into every space they want to with no effort!
