oniTony··on [dead]
so how much is an affiliate payout on 1¢ phones? ;)
oniTony··on Full disk encryption is too good?
Not sure, but there are cases of jailtime.

> "Drage was convicted of failing to disclose an encryption key in September." [1]

Though it says that he "failed" to disclose a password when asked. Not clear if he was unwilling or unable, and if such a distinction even matters. (It's unclear if the use of the term "refusal" was an actual action, or a journalistic spin. It might come down to needing to be very careful about word choice in such situations; "I would like to speak with my lawyer first" seems like the most appropriate answer).

oniTony··on Full disk encryption is too good?
That might currently be the case for UK. Though it's quite reasonable to forget a password, especially in a high-stress situation of an interrogation. Extra hilarity ensues when there is actually _no_ password for a TrueCrypt volume that _does not_ exist, and one fails to provide a working password.

That is, while one can prove that there is no physical key to a door on the person, there is no way to prove that one does not know the password.

oniTony··on The splash page that drove up conversion by 300%
any number of cores more than 1 is only relevant for parallel code (or multiple concurrent apps). Which, for this page, is probably not the case.
oniTony··on Google and UT’s 2011 AI Challenge: Ants
I'm pretty sure that the contest is hosted by the University of Waterloo's Computer Science Club; Google is a sponsor, UofT is definitely not a host -- http://aichallenge.org/faq.php
oniTony··on Resume.io - Crazy-simple online resumes with impression tracking.
My resumes are typically tweaked to be job specific. Do I get to create just one generic apply-to-all copy?

How about tracking metrics other than just views? Following http://paulbutler.org/archives/experiment-in-testing-my-resu... there are: how far into resume one scrolls, clickthroughs on embedded links, inclusion/exclusion of sections (e.g. grades for recent grads).

oniTony··on Two amusing side channel attacks
a citation from the article has an FAQ with just that question. http://tau.ac.il/~tromer/acoustic/#Q2
oniTony··on Two amusing side channel attacks
It's a matter of physical security and not allowing random people with specialty tools near the sensitive hardware (which is applicable to all other side channel attacks). Depending on the amount of access and tools, an attacker could just power-saw a side of the case off (along with all that epoxy) and hook up into the USB power rail.

Though obviously that is not very discreet. I wonder if "a very precise voltmeter" can fit inside of a non-suspicious looking USB device...

oniTony··on FBI to launch nationwide facial recognition service
And soon you might be eligible to come up as a false-positive for all kinds of FBI lookups!
oniTony··on The great startup idea that I can't reveal (yet)
That's a legitimate concern though. People have unoriginal broad ideas ("I want to sell stuff through app/website") and supply over-reaching NDAs ("_everything_ mentioned is covered, with no expiration date"). Even if such is ultimately not enforceable, it could still be a major legal pain, if during your lifetime you get to work on a project that also implements some type of "selling stuff online" (see Lodsys' troll patents and legal pursuits).
oniTony··on Google's Introduction to Parallel Programming and MapReduce
The advantage is that you don't need 1:1 ratio of tasks. You could have many mappers and just a few reducers, or the other way around.. depending on how the problem is broken up into tasks.
oniTony··on Google's Introduction to Parallel Programming and MapReduce
my RISC-architectured world has been shattered. Neat example.
oniTony··on Google's Introduction to Parallel Programming and MapReduce
lock-free data structures are also really really neat. Implementing such is another matter though...
oniTony··on Google's Introduction to Parallel Programming and MapReduce
Right. Those are stricter definitions.

Although wouldn't Parallelism's multiple operations each be "in-flight"? That is, it's pretty clear that one can have concurrency without parallelism, but you seem to suggest that one can have parallelism without concurrency ("deterministic parallelism"). Which doesn't _sound_ right... Even with MapReduce, the order in which tasks are complete are not deterministic (different hardware, network latency, etc), so I don't see how you could determine in which order mappers are passed on to reducers.

oniTony··on Google's Introduction to Parallel Programming and MapReduce
Concurrency (single CPU context switching) is "easy". Parallel programming (multiple tasks on multiple CPUs) is _hard_. I'm currently studying the internals of parallel programming, I am amazed by how much magic MapReduce abstracts away.
oniTony··on You're Ramen Sustainable
It's easy to calculate dollar value opportunity cost of closing shop and getting paid Big Corp Inc.'s salary. It's really hard to calculate utility value of running a hipster gelato bar and hanging out with fellow developers all day.
oniTony··on Startup Ideas We'd Be Willing To Pay For
> recommendations through friends and friends of friends

So kind of like http://www.gigpark.com/ (which is arguably something like "Yelp for (Business and other types of) Services").

oniTony··on Ask HN: Which universities provide the best environment for startups?
Does it have to be in U.S.? UWaterloo (Canada) has dedicated student residence as a startup incubator http://velocity.uwaterloo.ca/
oniTony··on How I Dealt with Student Plagiarism
Depends on what you plan on doing in the real world. Googling for code snippets will not help you with novel algorithm design/analysis (though here I'm thinking of Computer Science, not "programming").
oniTony··on NYU Prof Vows Never to Probe Cheating Again—and Faces a Backlash
Not sure on what's typical, but my University uses a "you get to keep your IP" as a selling point; so presumably there must be enough of other institutions where this is not the case. UMissouri's attempt to claim royalties for student's in-class developed iPhone app (although later backing down and changing policies) is an interesting example of the other extreme.
oniTony··on As I run past the RIM buildings, I see these posters
Google's Kitchener/Waterloo office is growing rapidly. Google has been hiring many of us (UWaterloo students/grads) for intern/full-time positions. I, for one, welcome our new Android overlords.
oniTony··on US claims all .com and .net websites are in its jurisdiction
.onion ? Technically not a real DNS entry, and is not present in DNS root.
oniTony··on How to check your car for a GPS tracker
At the very least, they will threaten to charge you with... whatever.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110303/ap_on_re_us/us_gps_track...

> the agents who showed up to collect the device were "hostile," threatening to charge Afifi if he didn't immediately cooperate and refusing his request to have a lawyer present.

oniTony··on How to check your car for a GPS tracker
The article does not make any suggestions as to what to do if a tracker _is_ found on a car.
oniTony··on Facebook Hiring Process Sucks
I had a very different experience. HR person was in Palo Alto, and went out of his way to set himself up with Skype (as I have no actual phone number) to talk with me at my choice of times.

Overall I was pleased with their HR, although it was odd that there was only one SDE phone interview (as oppose to typical pair of phone interviews that Amazon and Google has).

oniTony··on Ask HN: Viable to open LLC to run open wifi (or TOR exit node)?
Good point; though this seems to suggest that wifi/TOR is explicitly criminal.
oniTony··on 2-D Glasses
This was actually one of the April 1st jokes on Think Geek this year.
oniTony··on Stop Telling Students Recursion is Hard
Interestingly enough, in curriculums that start out with functional languages (e.g. Scheme) students have little trouble with recursion... and then consider iterative loops to be "hard".
