onezerozeroone··on Homeless Lose a Longtime Last Resort: Living in a Car
Don't spend >30% of your gross income on housing.

Debt is evil. Unless you can get a higher rate of return than the interest rate of your debt, pay off the debt as soon as possible.

Have at least 6 months of expenses in an easily accessible, liquid place like a bank account. Once you've got that rainy-day fund in place, plow the rest (at least 10% of income, 20% is probably a better target) into investments and take any tax advantages possible:

Traditional IRA + Roth IRA ($5500 combined max/year)

Traditional IRA contribution is tax deductible if you aren't covered by a work retirement plan or if you're under a certain earning threshold.

Take advantage of 401(k) if your employer offers it, contribute at least enough to get any matching they offer. These are pre-tax dollars, but some plans have shitty investment options, so YMMV. $17,500 max/year.

Put the rest in an individual brokerage account and invest regularly (monthly or quarterly) in low-cost, broad-market index funds or ETFs like VTI, VOO, or QQQ.

The rest is your fun money...you're young, so make sure you're also investing in yourself by going on trips, having fun experiences, etc, just keep the future in mind and don't go TOO crazy!

Until you get into the board meeting and realize you don't get to just do whatever you want to do while telling everyone what is best. If you go cowboy, you better make sure it 100% pays off, otherwise your time to failure is going to be quite short. At best you don't get more funding, at worst you get yourself blacklisted.
onezerozeroone··on Using Scala Will Make You Less Productive
Exactly this. Developers need to think holistically. Sure, maybe you can F5 your way to basic functionality, and that might make it seem like you're saving time in the short-term, but you also need to account for the hours and hours of painful bug hunting you'll occasionally (but inevitably) incur when that one sneaky null reference or fence-post error makes it into prod.
onezerozeroone··on My Life as a Retail Worker: Nasty, Brutish, and Cheap
The $25 socks his manager gave him were an "impulse buy" in his former life. Wonder no more!
onezerozeroone··on Silk Road 2 Hacked, All Bitcoins Stolen
You're reading "justice" here to be synonymous with government action. "Whatever means" = their "community" doing whatever it takes to achieve their goals, period. The author is essentially threatening murder, kidnapping, extortion, or worse and encouraging the members of the site to help make it happen.
onezerozeroone··on Building Real-time Apps with AngularJS and Firebase [video]
What does firebase offer (other than convenience) that say, a rabbitMQ or zeroMQ setup doesn't?

Seems like it's a simple JS API to a server component that manages subscriptions to fanout exchanges.
