onetimePete··on Code Blocks: open-source, cross-platform, free C, C++ and Fortran IDE
It had some issues with the console_host not dieing on abort? Killing the process was one of the not so funny memory's of my tutor existence at some university courses.

Otherwise solid little IDE though. Works always out of the box. On almost any system you throw at it. And where there is complaints there is at least usage.

onetimePete··on The Scariest, Most Boring Armageddon
So, the idea is to create a society that survives even this scenario. Distributed Library's,that survive Alexandria. Rugged Tech, that can be made even with just sun power and leftovers. Social networks, that allow for continued cooperation even during times of enforced isolation by disease and war. Social networks that enforce social behavior, by the world bearing witness. Tech that evades the control of the temporary mighty, warlords and priest castes, that try to "stabilize" society by freezing it between the holy cycles of overpopulation and civil war. Lots of work. Doable Work.

onetimePete··on Video games are essential for inventing artificial intelligence
I wonder, if you fear the headcrash- feal the failability of the mortal flash- could you get religious. Believe in reincarnation as a backup if you have been exponential enough?
onetimePete··on The Heroes of CRISPR
We weakend encryption to get to the terrorists- and now they got there own.
onetimePete··on A critique of "How to C in 2016"
That is the basic problem with show and tell with a low-level language. You either have a simple working example, with a dozen edge cases not caught. Or you have the usual check-hedge growth around Input and Output - which makes the Code hard to read. They chose the correct examples for the task- thus they where right, and your expert was wrong.
onetimePete··on Ebola virus: New case emerges in Sierra Leone
The problem is actually the perception of a disease as handled- once it does no longer produce acute infections.

This view of a long term problem, hinders actual solutions - like attempts to predict future mutations - and have medication already made, should the disease leave its reservoir and reappear. The black plague in Europe was "defeated" several times and returned.

onetimePete··on PowerVR Wizard GPU does real-time ray tracing at 10x lower power than Nvidia GTX
No we wont, its no longer paying off to invest that much.

Write a bunch of new shaders - nobody notices anything. Write a good procedural content generator- suddenly applause. The gfx-race is over- it died a horrible death on the plateau beneath uncanny valley. Its a real shame, cause the technology invented is just so neat- but that is how it is.

onetimePete··on If You Build It, They Will Complain
If you think you build it, it is actually half finished, and left to everyone to finish- who is able to just use git clone on your mind. Cause there is no documentation.

And no- its not snappy to remark upon this after investing a day on fixing your broken code-garbage can, just because its "free" - cause it was not. Time is money, and if you ask people to work for you for free, you are expensive. Solution: Just do not claim with your project to be what you are not. You're software is not free. You're software is not easy to use. You're software is not plug and play in any way. Do not claim that. Say, that it is a bolted together prototype and warn people who don't have experience with this, that they might be in for a investment of weeks. Everyone stays happy.

Could the same system be implemented with a column of concrete and a tank of water under the surface of the ocean?

Fine ill go back to shader writting...
onetimePete··on Volkswagen and the Blame the Engineer Game
Are you aware, that the german prosecutor you quote works across the hall of the biggest share owner of VW? Thats right, the ministry of the sub-state that owns most of the shares and which is not completely independent is what? Somebody here should be prosecuting his own boss.
onetimePete··on Muslims Hate ISIS Most of All
any religious movement producing exponential people in a logarithmic resource producing world, should not feel sorry for the social dynamites side effects, i agree. Irresponsible is just how god made us in his image. Its the planners, the schemers, the scientists, trying to control there little world, by heaping surplus on cost savings, trying to keep society stable ahead of the curve. You were a schemer, you had plans, look at what that got you. Me, im a dog chasing cars, i wouldn't know what to do if i caught one..
onetimePete··on Ireland to 'decriminalise' small amounts of drugs for personal use
Anyone remember the absurd projects to freeze parts of humanity in the 70s - to solve problems.

Are drugs not basically a freezing process? You age, yes, but you are out of society, out of the high consume, reproduce circle, into something that gets you nowhere and costs you nothing but lifetime while doing them.Actually a good problem solution, if controlled by the state.

Lucky for us, every parent on this planet will scream in protest on this statement and enforce a counter policy to extend behaviour control into adult-hood and guarantee offsprings offspring. Thus a Thrug-of-War ensues, called the war on drugs.

onetimePete··on VMware GPL Enforcement Suit in Germany Continues
Aggregate destructive material in the opposition. Use the resources of competitors to blow it all up later?
onetimePete··on On being a female on a male-dominated engineering team
Thank you for that reply. I always favoured meritocracy, but im currently running into this "outside" world, the challenges the outside world poses are fascinating. People are so complicated, it should be a science.
