ondrae··on Foursquare raises $41 million Series D round
My trip to Bogotá was 10x better experience because of FourSquare. GMaps was totally wrong, Yelp didn't exist, tourist guides are all cookie cutter. FourSquare had all these amazing recommendations, most of which came from people I follow. Great service.
ondrae··on Why Postgres
PostGIS is an extension of Postgres that turns it into the best geo-spatial database out.

ondrae··on Instagram 3.0 Bets Big On Geolocation With Photo Maps,
Google Maps huh? Millions of views a day. I wonder how much that is going to cost Facebook. Way more than rolling out their own service, I'm sure. People expect Gmaps though.
ondrae··on OnLive comes to Ouya, Controller Makes Full Frontal Debut
OnLive has been amazing to me. I've bought a few games on it and rented a handful. I live in San Francisco, so my internet was fast enough for good graphics. When I bought Borderlands, there were plenty of other people to multiplayer with.

I'm kind of hoping to never build a gaming PC again.

ondrae··on Tech's center of gravity shifts north to San Francisco
Every time the planning department has tried to increase density along the transportation corridors on the west side of the city, the neighborhood groups come out in force against it. We desperately need light rail and five story mixed-use all the way down Geary.
ondrae··on Claude Monet at Work in His Garden, 1915
He had style and swagger. All white suit, pocket kerchief, and a cocked hat.
ondrae··on PostgreSQL Rising
The recent release of PostGIS 2, the spatial extension of Postgres, has been a huge benefit to geo software. It has increased the ease and speed at which we can now work with large data sets and do spatial computation on them.

My favorite part of PostGIS 2, besides much of the cleaned up syntax, is the new Geography datatype. It has the spatial projection built in to it, so it automatically does great arc computations. Before we had to write more clunky SQL to achieve this. Was a significant barrier for my learning postgis, which has now been removed.

ondrae··on Tethr: Getting online in a crisis
Tethr is a really cool convergence of open source software and hardware that will save lives. I'm really impressed by disaster response technology. I hope Tethr works well and is widely deployed.

Light weight related, the Open Street Maps response to the Haiti earthquake was particularly impressive. Here is a slideshow about that. http://www.slideshare.net/sabman/haiti-quake-public-key

ondrae··on EFF, Reddit, Mozilla, others launch Internet Defense League and Cat Signal
Where is your internet defense league?
ondrae··on Google Now
I have all kinds of questions about how they choose which information is most important about a user's geography, such as showing trains schedules when in the station. Did they take all of their Google Places categories and analyze which apps where being used more in what types of places? How do they decide where you are at in a city, where locations are all stacked on top of each other? I hope they open this up so we can add in relevant streams, mostly public safety info. p.s. I would love to work on these problems. City data is super interesting to me.
ondrae··on The Coming Meltdown In College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Soon
I went to a <10K state school where I learned the skills I needed to get my DIY education afterwards. Undergraduate school taught me how to learn. It taught me how to not be a slob and be productive.

The domain learning useful for my career came after.

ondrae··on Woodcut Maps: Handcrafted wood-inlay maps, designed by you
I'm really interested in hearing more about your process. See you at WhereCamp.
ondrae··on Boston beats Silicon Valley when it comes to transit & bike sharing
Bike sharing is coming to San Francisco and the Valley this Summer. http://sf.streetsblog.org/2012/02/02/bike-share-coming-to-sf...
ondrae··on Pycon 2012 Videos
Thank you!
ondrae··on Why (and how) we've switched away from Google Maps
Its incorrect? Great! A chance for you you to contribute. I enjoy when I get to add to OpenStreetMaps and Wikipedia.
ondrae··on The Unintended Effects of Driverless Cars
The effects of 20x fewer vehicles in our cities will have enormous impact on urban design and planning. The very shape of our metropolises will be realigned away from the auto-dominated patterns of the last 60 years.

Walkable, livable, green urban cores will become the new standard.

ondrae··on DotCloud Pricing Announced
Thanks Shykes! I've been building my app on your service and have become hooked. I showed your tour video to my office today and they were all very intrigued. Congratulations on the launch.
ondrae··on Laser-made bike lane could save lives
The mockup had the lane extending behind and in front of the cyclist. They were building prototypes last I heard, but nothing ever came of it. I want to make one too.
