omegote··on A Book about Qt5
That looks amazing. Do you use Qml or standard QWidgets?
omegote··on Ask HN: How bad is freelancing?
After having been freelancing at upwork and the like for a couple of years in my spare time, I'd never do it as my single source of income. There are just too many ups and downs, I appreciate the consistency of a 9-5 job.
omegote··on Comprehensive Python Cheatsheet (2018)
I'm not sure what you're trying to imply. If it's regarding the order, you're wrong. The keys returned by either `keys()` or by `__iter__` are returned in arbitrary order [1].

omegote··on Comprehensive Python Cheatsheet (2018)
There are several items that are dubious at best. Why would you use

    no_duplicates    = list(dict.fromkeys(<list>))
instead of

    no_duplicates = list(set(<list>))

?
omegote··on Learn Git Branching
Me too, I hate reading technical docs in spanish. I wouldn't have translated the web whatsoever.
omegote··on Learn Git Branching
The page spawns in the system locale, and it's pretty hard to change it using the icon in the toolbar below due to the overlay.
omegote··on Learn Git Branching
It's sad that the default spanish translation is so obviously localized (for Argentinians in particular). It's annoying for the rest of spanish speakers to read the texts, specially the imperatives ("Compartí" instead of "Comparte", etc).
omegote··on The C++ Build Process Explained
Doxygen can generate a list of all class members, including those from all ancestors. If you wanna do that checking header files you'll have to keep jumping between files going from parent to parent class.
omegote··on JSCPP, a simple C++ interpreter written in JavaScript
* A subset of C++.
omegote··on Ending support for Dropbox syncing to drives with certain uncommon file systems
Lol what.
omegote··on Show HN: Brutal.js – a small framework for building brutalist web applications
Second article regarding brutalism I've sent today in HN. Sheesh, time to redesign all of my websites with brutalist style.
omegote··on Alternatives to Google Products
> Using a font developed by Google doesn't help Google track you Oh you bet it does, if you load it from googlefonts.com
omegote··on Alternatives to Google Products
Funny how a website that announces alternatives to Google Products has a flash of unstyled content because it uses... Roboto as the main body font.

Roboto is a typeface developed by Google...

omegote··on Middle name initials enhance evaluations of intellectual performance (2014)
Good thing I have a first name, a middle name and two surnames. That makes me a prodigy.
omegote··on Show HN: Parabola.io – Automate your work with visual programming
Pentaho anyone?
omegote··on Adobe Photoshop 1.0.1 Source Code (2013)
It would be great if someone did a high level diagram of the source code to have a taste of the overall architecture without having to dig into the code, specially for those who, like me, don't speak Pascal.
omegote··on What we've learned from building Ghost after 5 years and $3M
I was a Ghost user for ~3 years (from Jan 2014 to the best part of 2016) and eventually switched to WordPress. I loved Ghost minimalism and its usage of Markdown, but there were several issues that made it a no-no. I was kinda sad to let it go actually.

I took the time to write to the Ghost support email with my thoughts on the switch and my main issues (namely no categories, lack of i18n, editor live-view performance with many images, no search -- this was middle 2016, maybe they have these features now but they didn't then)

They took the trouble of answering my email, I found it rather nice.

omegote··on Why it took a long time to build the tiny link preview on Wikipedia
Not to mention another probable reason: Mediawiki's codebase is a mess and should be rebuilt from the ground up, if possible not in PHP. I once had to build an extension for it and it still gives me the creeps.
omegote··on Show HN: Turn indented text into mind maps
For a less "floaty" style, this is a project I build some time ago, I think I already posted it here:

omegote··on Qt or HTML5? A Million Dollar Question
I've been a full-stack web developer for many years but the last two years I've switched to C++ & Qt development and god is it a pleasure to work with. I only work with Qt Widgets, but I've always wanted to fiddle with QML/QtQuick, although I find the official tutorials lacking.

Any good resources to start working with QML/QtQuick?

omegote··on Ask HN: What software is so good you are surprised it is free?
And libVLC for that matter. I had to embed some media viewers in a Qt app and libVLC made it a breeze.
omegote··on JS Paint – A web-based MS Paint remake
And built with jQuery. Yeah, I can feel the burn of those edgy react and angular devs...
omegote··on Ask HN: What are fun entertaining YouTube channels/videos you watch in free time?
My all time favourite is I Like To Make Stuff https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6x7GwJxuoABSosgVXDYtTw - All things DIY, usually more focused on woodworking but with a nice touch of electronics, Arduino, etc. You can definitely feel his background on software engineering.
omegote··on Amazon changes its review policy
I don't think it's gonna make a difference. At least in Amazon ES, most reviews are written by top reviewers who have made their "career" by first reviewing small products bought by them and after that they're gifted other, bigger products (using 100% OFF coupons so they appear as verified purchases). The moment you find a review with several pictures and paragraph-separated long texts you know it's a paid review with zero value.

And Amazon ES is full of those.

omegote··on Django 2.0 released
Indeed. The somehow clunky syntax for named groups in python re was (in my opinion) a big drawback with old style routing. I hope this new style gains traction.
omegote··on A 12pt Font Should Be the Same Size Everywhere (2012)
> Apple's approach with their Retina displays was brilliant

Brilliant? Rather "lazy". They jeopardized the entire screen resolution spectrum introducing non-standard resolutions just to fit their vision, producing a new set of problems on its own.

omegote··on Freelancer.com has ruined my life
I think Upwork is a little more protective in that aspect. You can clearly see from the beginning whether the client has a verified payment method.
omegote··on A curated directory of resources and tools to help you build your startup
Ok so there are _ten_ different services just to _name_ your startup? Duuude seriously?
omegote··on Python Graph Gallery
Aaaand it's gone.
omegote··on How Bodega typifies Silicon Valley’s cultural ignorance
This article is gold. I honestly hope the startup bubble bursts soon enough so this kind of crap finishes one and for all. Too much money has been wasted in these "companies" that could've been used for better purposes.
