ollifi··on The Case of the Extra 40ms
They improved it on copying, this does not work in MacOS.
ollifi··on The Case of the Extra 40ms
Only works if your keyboard layout includes backtick unfortunately.
ollifi··on McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu
Are McVeggies and McVegans not plant based? The new effort looks more inhouse project though.
ollifi··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
It used to be like this but this image is bit outdated. During recent decade laws got changed and grocery stores can be open now 24/7. Some of the stores do this. It’s not limited to convenience store sized stores so even some of the largest ones are open if you enjoy strolling alone food isles at 4am.

Other stores close 9pm. Bars are open till 2am, night clubs 4 or 5am. Some places stay open but they can’t serve alcohol in the morning hours. Getting food after 12am is trickier but there are restaurants that are open until 4am.

And it’s dark. And people on average go to work early and clock out early. And definitely not new york or berlin nightlife wise.

Talking about helsinki here pre covid regulations.

Edit: reading other comment, it’s true most speciality stores which only have one set of employees close 6-8pm. Larger chains are open till 9pm

How does your age map to this Douglas Adams quote:

”I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies: 1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. 2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. 3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.”

It’s supposedly run by private individual identified in the page. It is possible that it is harvesting e-mail addresses, but does not require other info.

ollifi··on Most-streamed track of the day by country
Maybe auto-tune is like guitar distortion and we never get over it.
ollifi··on Ray Tracing Essentials Part 7: Denoising for Ray Tracing
If we had enough power though we could do away with the performance hacks and just use one 'correct' way to draw the scene. This combined with accurate representations of materials would make building scenes easier and result in more coherent worlds.
ollifi··on Why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?
Interesting numbers. Where are the spending per GDP from? IMF numbers in Wikipedia put US spending at 35%.

Also should comparing the spending numbers take into account that healthcare, schools and universities are paid by government spending in the Nordics and not from household income?

Honest questions, I'm really interested in these differences between systems.

ollifi··on Background Matting: The World is Your Green Screen
I work quite a bit with green screen keying. I see the same keylights, ultimattes and primattes used still even in big productions I have worked. Fixing the key can take weeks. Maybe industry is bit conservative and I haven't seen cool new stuff bubbling under, but would love to have new tools in the toolset to approach difficult shots.
ollifi··on Background Matting: The World is Your Green Screen
Anybody know of any work done to improve greenscreen keying? The current old school techniques work quite poorly and require so much manual work. I would imagine with the new work coming out with neural nets etc. there would be possibilities for improvement. This is very cool work and good for certain applications, but seems to produce similar problems like greenscreen to some edges.
ollifi··on Coronavirus-afflicted global economy is almost certainly in recession
Also depending on where you live many people who usually use public transportation and still have to commute opt for bicycles if that's viable.
ollifi··on Simula: A VR window manager for Linux
Looks cool and will try it out. That said, these things always feel like old paradigm stuffed in to new technology. Bit similar like when film was new people kept using it to record theater. It took years to come up with editing, not having to start scene by people entering the stage etc. Now that we have unlimited spatial space to manipulate the thing we come up with is to fill it with 2d screens.
ollifi··on Building a walkie-talkie for remote work
I phrased it wrong. It was a stream from webcam to indicate I was there. I don't think it needs to be good quality or fast frame rate though. Maybe even better if it's really pixellated. Just something to remind people. If somebody forgot to turn on the tv I had to mute the chatter in my end as well, because people very easily start having too private conversations.

Avatar could be quite fun but maybe too uncanny as well.

ollifi··on Building a walkie-talkie for remote work
I've worked remote with a small team by having image of me on a monitor. I heard what was talked around the monitor and could push-to-talk comment back.

It didn't feel distracting the way receiving a phone call while being remote felt. It's clunky enough that people didn't come up unless they had to and I still could keep up with the verbal information that was passed along with the office gossip.

Some people get really bothered about this idea and probably if you are working on independent tasks you don't need to be so connected. For tight teamwork I found it to be the least bad option.

ollifi··on Startup Ideas 2020
Exactly, they are stupid. If they worked the experience would be the same as sharing the same space. The tech should be more or less invisible.
ollifi··on Back pain is a problem which is badly treated
I was complaining about my back pain to older friend and he said that you know many people start getting those after 25 or so and then they stop before they hit 40. That's why everyone also has story of miracle cure.

Very controversial. Pilates finally did it for me.

ollifi··on Researchers find inverse correlation between advertising and life satisfaction
I like your post and think this is common attitude towards consumption among some techies, but I find it interesting that laptop brand still gets mentioned.
ollifi··on The Light Phone
I would guess the high price is partly because there is not so much demand and they don't have the volume. It's a niche product. I think it makes sense to set the price way up and only target the people who really want this. Why does everything have to appeal to some abstract group of 'most cosumers'?
ollifi··on Digital Tools I Wish Existed
There are only few types of digital formats I use really. Text, audio, still photo, video and maybe 3d description of a place or an object, but the last one is still quite marginal.

It would be nice make arbitrary collections of these, add metadata such as place, time and author and send them to other users or bots.

If you want to go crazy you could add permissions and encryption which would enable private conversation and message board / social media style structures. Pick boring standard file formats that are "good enough" for consumer use (one lossy and one lossless for each media)

Maybe I am dreaming of hypertext. The webserver-client structure of internet makes things easily very siloed and the ways to share documents you come a cross in the net are very clunky because everyone needs to reinvent the format and the player for everything more complicated than simple text or image.

ollifi··on Everything is amazing, but nothing is ours
I think this happened to many early movies. There are many lost films where we only have written descriptions and still images left. A whole system for film archiving was put in place to prevent this from happening as it was deemed too important to be left into hands of producers. I believe in order to put something out nowdays you are required to provide a copy to archive. Not sure if it is world wide requirement or local though.
ollifi··on How SSH Port Became 22
SSH is a publicly traded company since the dotcom era[1]. I think corporate wordpress feel is in line.

ollifi··on A systematic study of the advice people would give to their younger selves
Tricky, I would say it's not worth it to gamble with winner takes it all type of things. You'll never notice that you made it and actually will probably fail.

On the other hand I would not have much respect for young person who would actually follow this advice.

ollifi··on Algorithm allows video editors to modify talking-head videos as if editing text
I find it worrying that only now people start to be sceptical about visual information. There is a huge difference between real world and the framed and curated view photographer or documentarist gives you. If you go to school to learn about this stuff it's mostly about how to convey your view through these tools and the ethical implications of it.

I think people vastly underestimate how much editing and framing change the perceived truth of what happened. It is more subtle than manipulating the contents of video, but I think it can be in many ways more effective as most of this stuff bypasses your cognition and is not straight up lying.

It feels the same as in written news changing the quote vs. changing text around the quote.

I think we would be better of looking at video like it was picture drawn or text written by someone. It's an artistic rendition of the events.

ollifi··on The cult of Stanley Kubrick
As someone working in film I think that quote is quite good. Director is hugely important, but it really is about the team. Good director picks the players and aligns everyone, but it takes lot of people to come up with the creative decisions and solve all the aspects of the film.

Director is constrained by the input of the team and resources of the budget etc. those are the compromises which make the art.

ollifi··on Diablo creator David Brevik is back with a new game: It Lurks Below
Maybe games need the director concept from movies where one person can act as the face of the project. I think it helps everyone that group efforts are projected through single person who carries responsibility of the outcome.
ollifi··on Exploring strategies to decarbonize electricity
> My lights use 8.5 Wh apiece.

Then again your lights used 40-60w apiece just few years back.

ollifi··on Daylight Visualizer
Standard lighting is way too dim and does not replace sunlight. It's very good idea to let as much sunlight in as possible. Even though it is only useful part of the day. Where I am from sun does not shine part of the year and living with artificial light only causes health issues to people.
ollifi··on Your own company? You can do it (2011)
Yes I agree. I don't know if this Charlie Munger musing [1] on how some fields figure out not to engage in cut throat competition is relevant here.
