olivermarks··on San Jose police union executive director charged with smuggling fentanyl into US
I had a young relative I chased around to try and get clean for years before he OD'd on opioids in a bay area Air BnB with his girlfriend. He would order laminated 'diving certificates' with drugs encased in them by mail, and other postal deliveries that were clearly really drug shipments. There is little reason for mules when 18 wheelers are bringing in hidden drug shipments from Mexico and the postal service are delivering deadly drugs from India as was the case with the San Jose police union dealer.

Bizarre thread. The Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels run China origin fentanyl in California. It is an enormous, industrial scale operation.

olivermarks··on What we still don’t know about how A.I. is trained
'As researchers pointed out when GPT-3 was released, much of its training data was drawn from Internet forums, where the voices of women, people of color, and older folks are underrepresented, leading to implicit biases in its output'.

My impression of many general internet forums is that they tend to be full of older people, women and also various people keen to air their cultural grievances.

I'd be interested to see the evidence the researchers came up with for this, and who they were.

(I'm a big fan of specialized forums and wikis, this is not necessarily a criticism)

olivermarks··on Scratched EV battery? Your insurer may have to junk the whole car
Between fire risk, lack of environmental logic and sheer expense in multiple areas I can't wait for battery powered transportation to enter the trough of disillusionment and for realists to put some checks and balances in place.

'EV battery problems also expose a hole in the green "circular economy" touted by carmakers.

At Synetiq, the UK's largest salvage company, head of operations Michael Hill said over the last 12 months the number of EVs in the isolation bay – where they must be checked to avoid fire risk - at the firm's Doncaster yard has soared, from perhaps a dozen every three days to up to 20 per day.

"We've seen a really big shift and it's across all manufacturers," Hill said.

The UK currently has no EV battery recycling facilities, so Synetiq has to remove the batteries from written-off cars and store them in containers. Hill estimated at least 95% of the cells in the hundreds of EV battery packs - and thousands of hybrid battery packs - Synetiq has stored at Doncaster are undamaged and should be reused.'

Thisis madness!

What's driving the battery fires with e-bikes and scooters?

'Everything' isn't being called woke, just the virtue signaling, self congratulatory racialization of just about everything, emotion driven fashion trends and general 'compassionate' incompetence, inevitably resulting in the well known phrase 'go woke go broke'...which is what happened to SVB. olivermarks··on SVB shows that there are few libertarians in a financial foxhole
From the link I posted:

'What this means going forward

An unintended side effect of the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes is that many banks and institutions are holding an unfathomable amount of low-yield debt that is now worth far less than it was a year ago. We went from a world where 100-Year Austrian bonds would pay only 0.39% yields, to one where we’re now concerned about 8-9% annual inflation, in just two years.

If institutions rightfully start deeming long-dated bonds to be a risky asset that isn't safe to hold on sensitive balance sheets, we could see bond premiums rise for these longer-dated bonds, raising the cost of capital for companies and governments alike...'

olivermarks··on SVB shows that there are few libertarians in a financial foxhole
It was their unwise bet on ten year T bonds that got SVB into difficulties, a far larger societal economic issue than is being acknowledged.

'This decade’s learning: bonds aren’t a universally safe asset class.' ...the US federal reserve are playing a dangerous game battling the inflation they enabled with rate hikes

olivermarks··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
Couple of typing errors on my post earlier: flood was 1862 not 1892, and 4k died not 40k. I didn't mention that the 1860's also had 2 major earthquakes, a drought and wildfires.
olivermarks··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
New towns and cities. Sprawl is last century thinking based on commuter xurbs etc. People should be able to chose to live in new 15 minute towns, historic metropolises or rurally.

olivermarks··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
California infrastructure was originally scaled for around 20m people. There are currently currently around 40m people and rising living in the state. There are huge cyclical environmental events - periods of drought, wildfires, torrential rain and flooding (the entire central valley flooded in 1892, killing 40k people, bankrupting the state and wiping out housing, cattle and crops). We have a mediocre electric grid that fails if any of the above environmental events happen. We allow 95% of rain water to flow into the ocean then promote panic about global warming when the inadequate reservoirs are depleted in dry spells.

Attempts were made to verticalize housing in the 1970's bay area, with predictable results from building life cycles such as Geneva towers in San Francisco. https://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=Remembrance_of_Genev...

We don't need to pack people like sardines into metropolitan areas any more. We need to create smaller, more human living spaces closer to resources. There is so much undeveloped land in the state but we are wrecking historically important locations instead of thinking new development. The YIYBY activists are obsessed with existing cities, they are rooted in the past.

olivermarks··on Young people in 13 EU countries refuse surveillance of online communication
Scott McNealy, co-founder and former CEO of Sun Microsystems, famously told a group of reporters, “You have zero privacy anyway… Get over it!” The year was 1999. The Internet as we know it was barely five years old.

Here we are in 2023 with huge commercial global data mills ingesting everything about everyone, with many people actually filing details of their private lives on Meta, tiktok etc every day...and yet edri is using a peashooter versus the EU and earnestly acting like it is still 1999..

olivermarks··on U.S. Postal Service starts nationwide electric vehicle fleet, buying 9,250 EVs
'a contract has also been awarded for the agency to acquire 9,250 commercial-off-the-shelf internal combustion engine vehicles "to fill the urgent need for vehicles." In December, the agency said that 21,000 COTS vehicles will be purchased and are "expected to be battery electric," but said that depends "on market availability and operational feasibility."

In this case, the internal combustion engine vehicles will be gas-powered and made by Fiat Chrysler Automobile, a spokesperson for USPS told CBS News. They added that, unlike older USPS vehicles, these will "feature air conditioning and advanced safety technology and are more suited to modern day operational requirements."

olivermarks··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger
There is no intention to allow people to work on their EVs. Between DRM and impossible complexity the vast majority of cars after around 2008 are almost impossible to fix yourself by design.

The next generation of vehicles are likely to drive away themselves if you haven't made payments and even drive themselves to be crushed.

olivermarks··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger

olivermarks··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger
We are going to greatly miss pick'n'pull and other salvage yards when they are gone. Countless families keep their older vehicles running by salvaging parts at weekends so they can get to work on Monday and keep a roof over their head.

olivermarks··on We are dropping the Dilbert comic because of creator Scott Adams racist rant
Adams is a very successful book author as a well as being a syndicated cartoonist that has enticed a lot of people to buy newspaper subscriptions. The idea publishers would cancel him due to his blog and podcast opinions flies in the face of business logic.

Local California newspapers are already full of junk, out of date establishment syndicated news stories and woke oped pieces written by junior journalism graduates who have strong radical progressive activist views and agendas. Reader comments (if allowed) tell a story of dissatisfaction in these publications. There is less and less reason to buy them.

I think Dilbert is a terrific cartoon strip that punctures the pretense of large corporation human resources hubris. I don't care what the author of this cartoon strips views are. I'm not interested in what Charles Schultz (Peanuts) political views were either.
