olegkikin··on America’s ‘Retail Apocalypse’ Is Really Just Beginning
Retail businesses provide services, just like barbers, who also don't produce anything.

- Transportation

- Breaking wholesale packs into something an average person can actually buy

- Holding and efficiently managing huge inventories

- Allowing you to touch, see, and sometimes try items before you buy them

- Dealing with broken items, instantly replacing them

- Providing all these services locally

Now how do I convert these points to bitcoins?
olegkikin··on Appalachian miners reject retraining because they think coal will make comeback
Skills that are actually useful and have enough demand aren't that easy to get. I'm extremely skeptical when people claim we can solve the automation job losses by retraining everyone. Converting a 50 year old miner to a programmer capable of solving real world problems seems like a pipe dream. Sure, there will be exceptional individuals who love to learn new things, but they are exceptional. Look at the market now - programmers already have high salaries, and it's still hard to find the talent.

olegkikin··on 'We can't compete': why universities are losing their best AI scientists
So your argument is they should stay and work for pennies, hoping to get an "interesting" job in the future, instead of getting an interesting and highly paid job right now?

It's also not obvious at all it's a bubble. AI field is already much more complex than the regular CS field, which already suffers from talent shortages. AI is the future, and the demand is here to stay.

olegkikin··on Amazon and Ebay Opened Pandora's Box of Chinese Counterfeits
So the counterfeiters will use a real hash from one (or from hundreds) of the real products.

That's why creating counterfeit-proof physical money is still an unsolved problem.

I've been thinking - maybe something like bitcoin can help. When you buy a product, you get 1 coin with it. When you resell, you have to send that coin to your buyer. Since counterfeiters can't make coins, that serves as a proof. Unfortunately it creates an annoying layer that all sellers of goods must follow.

olegkikin··on How Floyd Mayweather Helped Two Young Guys from Miami Get Rich in ICO
It's only a scam if false promises are made to the investors, knowingly that is.

I looked up Centra, Stox, Hubii, and while they all look somewhat generic, I don't see any crazy promises, especially to the investors.

From what I see the ICO hype is driven entirely by the investors and the FOMO. Many people missed most of the cryptocurrency exponential rise, and they think it's the second chance.

olegkikin··on Lost at sea: a man who vanished for 14 months (2015)
All could've been avoided by a simple wateproofed satphone with an emergency plan. Inmarsat ones are like $650, plus a few hundred a year for emergencies.

olegkikin··on AI Model Fundamentally Cracks Captchas, Scientists Say
Multiple choice doesn't work well for captchas. You can just guess and get it 25% of the time correct. Which is fine for spammers.
olegkikin··on AI Model Fundamentally Cracks Captchas, Scientists Say
> A man is running. A dog is behind him barking and growling. What does the man think might happen?

So what's the correct answer here?

* That's a mean dog

* I hope it's on a leash

* I hope it's not going to start running after me

* I hope I don't get bitten

* Where can I hide?

* OMG, I will get rabies!

olegkikin··on Anti-aging stem cell treatment proves successful in early human trials
Anti-aging is, in my mind, the most important area of research. I'm shocked billionaires are not throwing billions of dollars at it. Everything else can literally wait.

Isn't cooling a big problem for reactors in space? The ISS has massive radiators just for all the power solar panels put out.
olegkikin··on How the LIDAR tech GM just bought probably works
Humans tend to move their heads, which is why one-eyed depth perception still works.
olegkikin··on Could cryptocurrency mining kill online advertising?
Nobody would mine bitcoin in the browser in their right mind, it's a waste of resources. You would choose one of the coins made specifically for CPU/GPU mining only, no ASICs.
olegkikin··on Could cryptocurrency mining kill online advertising?
Depends on the traffic of the website and how long the visitors stay on it.

According to coinwarz you can make $5.1 for 24 hours of mining on CPU/GPU, but realistically (for an average visitor) probably closer to $1/24hrs. If we take Reddit, which has 13 minutes average visit, probably between 5M and 50M daily visits.

That's $45K - $451K daily revenue.

That's probably more than their ad revenue.
