olegkikin··on Russian submarine activity increases around Atlantic internet cables: report
Does it really matter? Most of the important data is already encrypted (and even the unimportant stuff like youtube video streams are served over HTTPS, not even sure why).

The real problem is them cutting or blowing up these cables.

olegkikin··on Three Delusions: Paper Wealth, a Booming Economy, and Bitcoin
Most people think he is unreliable as a source of market prediction, because he has been absolutely horrible at it, which is somehow his main occupation.
olegkikin··on Ask HN: How do Bitcoin millionaires cash out?
Send the BTC to an exchange.

Perform the trade into fiat.

Call the bank, warn them a large sum is incoming.

Withdraw.

Pay taxes.

A few million dollars is not a big deal in the bitcoin world these days. GDAX BTC-USD volume is $466 million in the last 24 hours. Bitstamp is another $353M.

olegkikin··on Magic Leap One
Every single lightfield device hides the specs till the launch date. And then it turns out that even if the resolution of the underlying display/camera is 10-20 megapixels, you have to divide it by 9 or 16 to get the actual resolution, which inevitably ends up being very blocky.
olegkikin··on The Pentagon’s U.F.O. Program
I looks like the plane is making a left turn, and yet the object is dead center in the screen with barely any shake. And it's definitely not stabilized, because all the lines on the display are still.

So maybe the pilot has some crazy ability to track a flying object perfectly while turning, but try doing it in any game and I think you will fail.

olegkikin··on Essential Image Optimization
It's hard to objectively compare lossy encoders. Yes, there are various metrics, but you will get very different results depending on which metric is chosen.
olegkikin··on Essential Image Optimization
I have a mini benchmark of lossless PNG compressors, in case anyone finds it useful.

Looks like it's happening:

olegkikin··on Philadelphia write-in candidate: I won with one vote
Considering there are no qualifications required, it's $12.5/hr, which is 66% more than the minimum wage of $7.25.
olegkikin··on Can anyone make money on the moon?
Expensive, not impossible.
olegkikin··on Can anyone make money on the moon?
It's a lot cheaper to build huge solar farms in deserts. Probably a couple of orders of magnitude cheaper.
olegkikin··on More Than a Million Pro-Repeal Net Neutrality Comments Were Likely Faked
Doesn't Netflix pay for its bandwidth?
olegkikin··on “I thought I could ship at least 700 units to stay in business”
It's not "a" job though, it was a partner position.
olegkikin··on “I thought I could ship at least 700 units to stay in business”
You're mad to turn down $600K, unless the job really sucked. Even if you project to make millions with your startup, multiply that by the risk of ~90% failure, you wouldn't do much better than $600K/year.

Still, very sorry about the situation, I'm sure you were hoping for the best.

olegkikin··on Google collects cell tower info even if location services are disabled
Just get one of those cases that block GPS signal, or even the one that blocks all signals (but you won't be able to receive calls). They are only a few bucks.
olegkikin··on Tell HN: No company that values security can risk Intel CPUs
What's your CPU of choice and how do you know it doesn't have backdoors?
olegkikin··on Samsung DeX
It's definitely not the processing power, modern phones are beasts, they can compete with 10-year old PCs.

The issue is other solutions give you ~10X more page loads per unit of time at the same price.
olegkikin··on Square announces pilot program to accept Bitcoin
They should really accept multiple cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is too slow now with the blocks full. At least Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash should be considered.
olegkikin··on How to Get Rich Playing Video Games Online
Shroud is the real high-roller. He regularly gets $100, $200, $500 tips. I think the highest single tip he's got was like $5000.
olegkikin··on WebAssembly support now shipping in all major browsers

Look at your Google Analytics, it's really not that important anymore.

olegkikin··on Alibaba hits nearly $18B in ‘Singles Day’ orders in 12 hours
You need to realize that pretty much all electronics is manufactured in China / Hong Kong these days. You can get quality things, you can get cheap crap.
olegkikin··on Senators push to ditch social security numbers in light of Equifax hack
What we really need are private keys, stored in hardware, like secure enclave. Whenever someone wants a proof of your identity, they ask you to sign a certain message with a timestamp.
olegkikin··on EPYC Server Configuration
Isn't it cheaper to buy the server with that much RAM and colocate?

This one is under $2K:

olegkikin··on BitTorrent inventor announces eco-friendly Bitcoin competitor Chia
So it's nothing new. Ethereum and Peercoin and Nxt do proof of stake.
olegkikin··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
I doubt software written in Rust has no bugs.
olegkikin··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
Ethereum works fine as a currency too (~15 sec per block, quite nice). It also works fine with simple contracts, it's the humans who aren't good enough (yet) to write bug-free code.

Bugs in software of various kinds cause billions of dollars worth of damage, deaths too. Yet I don't see people claiming it's the fault of C++.

olegkikin··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
Not ethereum, but one of the contracts written on top of it had a bug that some newbie triggered by mistake and locked something like $160M worth of moneys.
olegkikin··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
A few altcoins immediately went +20% up - NEO, IOTA, Omnise, Lisk, Waves, Ark. But not the ones I expected - like Ethereum.
