oldspiceman··on Canada's Pitch to Tech Entrepreneur: We'll Pay 80% of Your Salaries
This shouldn't dissuade anybody from trying. That's the whole point of business. Going out on a limb. Read the rules, follow them, and if it doesn't work out... at least you tried.

Did you have any problems filing the papers with the provincial/federal govs? I'm guessing it's a lot of work.

1. Is it this? http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/txcrdt/sred-rsde/menu-eng.html

2. If I were to start a new company, can I use this rebate when paying myself?

oldspiceman··on The Ripple Effects of Rising Student Debt
Why don't US citizens enroll in European universities? It's way cheaper and of similar standard. Plus there's tons of programs offered in English. Including Engineering etc.

Some reasons you should: - you're more attractive because you are foreign - you're less fearful of starting your own company because you're not in debt - alcohol is dirt cheap and you can legally drink - you can learn another language - you can explore all of europe on weekends because flights in europe are dirt cheap

The reason people don't: they're scared of doing something different.

oldspiceman··on What does a neural network actually do?
A less mathy explanation with some real examples: http://neuralnetworksanddeeplearning.com/chap1.html

Coding a digit recognizer using a neural network is an extremely rewarding exercise and there's a lot of help on the web to get you started.

oldspiceman··on Don’t Believe Anyone Who Tells You Learning To Code Is Easy
The only useful class I took in university was first year programming.

I felt like god when I first wrote an output stream to a file. I couldn't believe it was possible. Most people didn't have those kind of feelings. I think that's the difference. You're either captivated or you're not.

oldspiceman··on Ask HN: $500k cash – what to do with it?
Read about ETFs. They are the same as mutual funds without the fees.

Kids cost more than you think they will.

See if your bank will let you make a yearly lump sum payment on your mortgage directly on the principal. They do up here in Canada. If they don't, ask another bank if they will and then tell your bank you're willing to switch.

Managing money is not difficult. The more time you put into it the more money you will lose.

Be careful taking financial advice. People fall into two camps: fearful or optimistic. There are many more fearful people than optimistic people, even though the equity market has an upward tendency.

When purchasing investments, be wary of good sales people, they are the ones who will screw you the hardest. The geeky guy you don't trust is likely giving you good advice. The good looking guy who makes a lot of sense and who you just like for some reason... Run!

Why do you choose VTSMX over VTI? VTSMX expense ratio is 0.17 bps while VTI is 0.05.
oldspiceman··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
Rent or buy arguments universally skip what I consider the most important factor in any major investment decision: freedom. When you buy a house, you tie up major assets and take on a huge debt load. This provides a massive constraint on your life. You're less likely to take on a risky job opportunity, you're less likely to move for a good opportunity, you're less likely to purchase other things you enjoy, and you put all your eggs in one basket. On the last point, as Americans should know now, real estate is not a sure holder of value. You can easily lose 50-100K if you need to sell your house to move somewhere else but there are no buyers. The flipside of this is you may sell it for the asking price but need to wait a year to do so.
