oldgregg··on King County, WA bans facial recognition software
The corporate-government exploitation of the people is staggering. Corporations do all the spying and then give APIs to the government. No constitutional problems over here.
oldgregg··on Facebook faces ‘devastating’ EU-to-US data transfer ban
There is an assumption that everything in the world should have 10ms latency. Why? Borders have always been meaningful to protect unique people groups. Maybe the extra latency is a way to protect indigenous cultures and allow local solutions to compete with Facebook. There are indigenous people groups all over the world where governments have said "leave those people alone!" American tech companies have done FAR more to destroy local cultures than missionaries could have ever dreamed of. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Ultimately where it's going is that to the degree Facebook can't buy off all the local politicians it's going to have to follow the local laws and have unique policies for each jurisdiction. Ideally you would just have local companies running the social network, enforcing local norms, with federated APIs to communicate globally. Unfortunately the tech companies already control so much media and mindshare they are gonna probably keep that from happening in most places.
oldgregg··on ‘YouTube recommendations are toxic,’ says dev who worked on the algorithm (2019)
This is intentional. They want you to just follow their AI more than curate your own world. You live in their world.
oldgregg··on A court ruling in Austria could censor the internet worldwide
The multinational tech companies are EXISTENTIALLY motivated to weaken and dissolve national identity for this very reason. Every country they operate in they will algorithmically and politically oppose any nationalist movement. The tech companies moved quickly and captured the vast majority of the world-- their greatest terror is that, like china, countries will realize that allowing an american company to monitor and manipulate their population might not be in the best interest of the people. The multinationals will do their best to influence and when necessary but off political leaders around the world. The war is just beginning.
oldgregg··on There is little chance CRISPR will ever be widely used to directly treat disease
society has no problem with mass-eugenics? see: abortion. or transgenderism. when you grow up in a digital world where everything can be manipulated effortlessly bringing that human agency and engineering into the real world is rather predictable. add the substantial profit motive in there and there is no end to what we might see.
oldgregg··on Popular Pirate Sites ‘Disappear’ from DuckDuckGo’s Top Search Results
What makes you think a multinational corporation would be any better? They are at the mercy of regulators and will always bow to political pressure rather than the truth.
oldgregg··on Dark Web Price Index 2020
I agree but for different reasons. There is no financial incentive to run a TOR node-- it's expensive and opens you to real legal risks. Therefore most nodes are run by universities and unknown actors-- in any case they are almost all funded by the state. If I was a nation state it would make my job much EASIER if I corralled all of the bad actors into a network that has a handful of defined exit points more or less under my control. The entire notion is absurd. I2P is actually more secure because it routes traffic dynamically rather than trusting a centralized "authority"
oldgregg··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Given the Total Information Surviellance from Google this is relatively a non-issue. Nearly anything that meaningfully restrains Google is a net good at this point. Getting bent over this is like people who dismiss Signal for not having perfect e2e- purists that are oblivious to what is actually happening in the world.
oldgregg··on Facebook will block ads from state-controlled media outlets
Facebook's survival is precipitated on globalism and an impotent national identity. They can't have any more China's standing up to Facebook's imperial demands for total surveillance of every citizen. Thus, the globalist BBC will be welcomed with open arms while any entity that wishes to protect their indigenous culture and opposes globalization in any way will now be a "threat" -- it's all rather transparent.
oldgregg··on History of SQLite in the Browser (2014)
I really think this was more about crippling the browser experience to benefit native apps and P2P apps. Supposedly Sqlite, which is widely revered as one of the best engineered pieces of software maybe ever made, doesn't have an "alternative implementation" so it can't be used, but some guy at ORACLE comes up with a lackluster nosql solution and we're all good?! Not buying it...
oldgregg··on Ask HN: Best modern web stack for new self hosted projects
Build a dapp in Go right now. It's not good for modeling complex business problems but if your app is mostly API it's great for self-hosted. Memory management isn't a problem but def more verbose and less "fun" than ruby. If you use SQLite or badger as database it has a great install story- no configuration or docker even really needed. Front end is in Vue and that gets packed into 25mb binary I can run locally on win/Mac or throw on a VPS and run at scale.
oldgregg··on Dolt is Git for data
Really interesting. Would be nice to see documentation. All their examples show modifying the database by running command line sql queries, does it turn up a normal mysql instance or just emulate? Are hooks available in Go? Surprised they don't market it as a blockchain database. I'm building a Dapp right now and this could be really useful.
oldgregg··on The Jeffrey Epstein case is why people believe in Pizzagate
Agreed. Why would a billionaire support a candidate he "believes in" when he can outright own the candidate? There is that saying, "a big lie is easier to sell than a little lie" -- average middle class people comprehend cheating on taxes and spouses, but they simply don't have the exposure to understand there are psychopaths in the world who have zero morals and would kill for a glass of water if they knew they could get away with it. Look at the leaders throughout almost every civilization in history, it's the NORM for those in power to have their political rivals murdered-- very often their own family members. Anyone who thinks this is crazy or surprising is woefully ignore of history and the human condition.
oldgregg··on Spotify shuts down direct music uploading for independent artists
You're missing the point. Let's say Spotify pays rightholders 20% of gross revenue for streaming. Then they take another 40% of the gross revenue and pay the major labels for advertising, marketing... whatever. That's hollywood accounting-- it's not streaming revenue so they don't have to report it. Ever notice the labels don't complain that the streaming rates are so notoriously low? Why don't BMG/UMG/WMG just band together and demand an increase in streaming revenue? Because they WANT to keep it low so they make the real money on non-streaming revenue that doesn't go to rightsholders. Maintaining control is the issue and that's why they forced Spotify to make people work through their "partners"
oldgregg··on Spotify shuts down direct music uploading for independent artists
Doesn't matter. Do they provide line-level accounting for ad revenue? Do you know what percentage of TOTAL revenue gets paid to artists?
oldgregg··on Spotify shuts down direct music uploading for independent artists
This. All the major labels did not support spotify out of good will-- Spotify uses hollywood accounting to give the labels the spoils. Same exploitation of artists thats been going on for 100 years.
oldgregg··on The Collapsing Crime Rates of the ’90s Might Have Been Driven by Cellphones
If the Ford or Gates Foundation dump hundreds of millions into contraceptive/abortion services in Africa the direct effect is culling the world of black babies. Wrapping it in a veneer of do-goodery is what imperialists have always been doing. Eugenics is still VERY much alive-- I run into sophisticated urbane people all the time who openly believe child-bearing should be restricted to people who pass IQ or means testing.
oldgregg··on Cloudflare expands its government warrant canaries
Could a company create a warrant canary for every user? Just a simple notice when you login to your account? If the premise of the canary is that they can force you to keep silent but can't compel you to speak, what would prevent a company from doing this?
oldgregg··on Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System (2000) [pdf]
Vultr is good and cheap. You have to use a disposable visa gift card for your first $20 payment, but affer that bitcoin payment is enabled. the best visa cards are the $500 ones from simon malls-- 2.99$ activation fee and no ongoing or expiration fees. pay cash.
oldgregg··on ObjectBox: Fast object-oriented database for Go
I serialize into grpc and dump into badger.. excellent performance, no cgo kludge
oldgregg··on Mark Zuckerberg's personal challenge for 2018
Decentralized tools come at the risk of being harder to control? Lol I think we all know where Mark "dumb fucks" Zuckerberg comes down on power and control. There is something to this however since he is acknowledging it's a problem. Look for some big tech players to roll out more "decentralized" tools that still quietly give them various control and backdoors. Decentralization is a movement and the power brokers are getting in front to blunt it's effect.
oldgregg··on Google bans people from posting negative online reviews of former employers
"Conflict of interest" yeah right, with their ad sales team
oldgregg··on Why we never thank open source maintainers
It would be nice if github made it easy for people to assign a $ bounty to every issue and when it's marked complete payouts are automatic. There are a bunch of issues in various open source projects where I would easily drop $100 on a bounty.
oldgregg··on Ask HN: Blockchain projects to work on
Any particular languages?
oldgregg··on I wrote an end-to-end encrypted chat app using Elixir/Phoenix and Vue.js
good stuff! elixir+vue is my frameworks dejour right now

oldgregg··on Why Are America's Most Innovative Companies Still Stuck in 1950s Suburbia?
Corporations are modern city-states. Why would they give up control of their infrastructure to the bufoons in city council?
oldgregg··on Netflix to Shut Down Last Datacenter
Fascinating. I bet they are running their own CDN to prevent Amazon from having full access to their traffic volume/streaming demand. Would be huge competitive advantage for amazon streaming if they could see per-title demand.
oldgregg··on Startups.co to Acquire Zirtual, Service to Resume
Acquired all the assets?!? This seems really off, who is left holding the bag here?
oldgregg··on Dear Google Mail Team
No accident. Google controls enough of the worlds email now that can just turn the screws and capture the whole market.
