olah_1··on Meta is building a decentralized, text-based social network
Phone numbers became a “bigger deal” when they started being abused.

People just started using instagram as a first means of contact because it felt less personal. It allowed for more “escape hatches” if it turns out that you don’t like the person so much.

If phone numbers allowed for varying levels of trust like instagram, it would work as a social network today like it once did in the past

olah_1··on Meta is building a decentralized, text-based social network
I think the ideal social network would just extend the natural social networks of real life.

Moxie at Signal was right when he said the real “social network” is just your phone contacts.

olah_1··on Meta is building a decentralized, text-based social network
> Why is this obsession with decentralized?

One reason could be that decentralization reduces the liability on the company. They could save huge costs in letting users self-moderate and in not being responsible for illegal content.

olah_1··on Safety and Soundness in Rust
A member of the team explained that they have a game called Creative Playground (beta testing is open now) where 90% of it is written in Rust, where they still rely on physx and MoltenVK in C++.

So it seems like their other games then are more like 10% rust and 90% c++.

But I’m assuming that the Creative Playground is like a testing ground for using Rust in larger capacities down the road then

olah_1··on Domain Names as Handles in Bluesky
By the time they release the app to the public, the hype will be dead. Same thing as Clubhouse.

Invite-only just backfires ime

olah_1··on Safety and Soundness in Rust
> This is why no one has successfully done a major game on Rust. The foundations are too weak to support it.

The Finals open beta is happening on the 6th. Check it out https://www.reachthefinals.com/

Here is a blog post about their usage of Rust: https://medium.com/embarkstudios/inside-rust-at-embark-b82c0...

olah_1··on Clojure Turns 15 panel discussion video
Rich Hickey’s talks may outlive Clojure itself.

In some sense, the principles he taught and aimed for were the ideal. Clojure today wasn’t necessarily the ideal.

I think there could be room for a better Clojure than Clojure, so to speak

olah_1··on Show HN: Working on a Zero-Knowledge Daily Journaling App
> You do have to trust the company that it will never send the password or plaintext data back to the server. Checking this on a continuous basis is essentially impossible

This is why I like decentralized apps where you can use a content-addressed frontend that is just pinned to a specific version. I can choose to update to the next major version if I want to.

olah_1··on Cistercian Numerals
here is some research that was done on adding cistercian to unicode https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2020/20290-cistercian-digits.pdf

you can still email the author. he would love for someone to continue the research

olah_1··on Ask HN: How do I get into art?
I never tried "structured" drawing before. I think it's a sort of different skill. But I think it's also how you really start to unlock the ability to draw from imagination (without a reference).

Drawing from sight will moreso change the way you view the world (in terms of light and shadow and the shapes those make). Similar to photography.

olah_1··on Ask HN: How do I get into art?
One thing that I was shocked by is how mentally taxing it is to sit down and draw for X minutes.

It's like meditation. Extremely hard work. Makes you appreciate an artist that can draw / paint a subject for hours at a time.

The book I linked was technically what I read after DOTRSOTB, but I found it to be similar nonetheless.

olah_1··on Ask HN: How do I get into art?
One way to appreciate art is to try to make it yourself.

This book is an excellent way to try: https://archive.org/details/Keys_to_Drawing/mode/2up

Another popular book is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".

olah_1··on Lingua Graeca Per Se Illustrata
It is worth noting that there is another libre "natural method" book called Salute, Jonathan.

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Salute,_Jonathan!

Anyone can translate this into the language they are trying to teach as well. However, it may work best for western european style grammars, I am not sure.

olah_1··on Beaker Browser is now archived
I’m keeping my eyes on Farcaster and Nostr. BlueSky AKA “at protocol” seems too bloated to me. It really feels like everything in the architecture overview could have been 2x more simple.
olah_1··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
You can add someone on SSB just by adding their public key though. That's not what the comment above is talking about
olah_1··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
Threema has a concept of "levels" for contacts:

> Level 1 (red): The ID and public key have been obtained from the server because you received a message from this contact for the first time or added the ID manually. No matching contact was found in your address book (by phone number or email), and therefore you cannot be sure that the person is who they claim to be in their messages.

> Level 2 (orange): The ID has been matched with a contact in your address book (by phone number or email). Since the server verifies phone numbers and email addresses (via an SMS or email with the activation link), you can be reasonably sure that the person is who they claim to be.

> Level 3 (green): You have personally verified the ID and public key of the person by scanning their QR code. Assuming their device has not been hijacked, you can be very sure that messages from this contact were really written by the person that they indicate.

olah_1··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
Is that legal? In the interview, you basically have to lie about your employment situation, right?
olah_1··on Show HN: Transform any Wikipedia article into a graphical timeline
Looks cool, but I get a like of CORS errors in the console. Doesn't work.

olah_1··on Nostr is a stupid simple P2P protocol that works, built by builders
I think the architecture is the issue. Nobody wants their account owned by a random guy running a server as a hobby.
olah_1··on Noosphere, a Protocol for Thought
I believe that the best “spheres” (i think that is the noosphere term for encyclopedias) will just be referenced the most times.

I would assume that there will also be indexes that curate and collect the best spheres for people to search as well.

olah_1··on Noosphere, a Protocol for Thought
> but would that substantially improve on the current capabilities of Wikipedia?

Absolutely it would. Just as a quick example, there was an author whose name was red on Wikipedia, which I think means that someone intended to make a page for them at one point.

I created this page and it got blocked by a 17 year old because there wasn't enough citations. This was an author of 20 books, but Wikipedia won't allow his page because there wasn't... newspaper articles written about him??

Why should this information be lost to the world because Wikipedia is run by bored megalomaniacs?

I think that Larry Sanger's vision is to create a federated network of multiple encyclopedia's that can each specialize in their specific area. But Noosphere seems to want to be the P2P version of that. Cut out the middle man, I suppose.

olah_1··on Noosphere, a Protocol for Thought
I would love to try it out, but what is the current user experience exactly? All the code is in Rust, so is it command line only for now?

Is there a text editing app with a social element where you follow other people?

olah_1··on Nostr is a stupid simple P2P protocol that works, built by builders
I'm beginning to think that ActivityPub will never add anti-censorship features into the core protocol (for example, independent IDs that don't live on a relay server). Because I spoke with a core developer on ActivityPub stuff a couple of years ago about the issue of servers going offline and losing your account and he said that he was working on it.

But I wouldn't be surprised if he was discouraged from continuing this work because ultimately people like ActivityPub because server admins can be little dictators that censor and ban at will.

olah_1··on Noosphere, a Protocol for Thought
This sounds eerily similar to https://anytype.io
olah_1··on Noosphere, a Protocol for Thought
Explain it in terms of what people already know, like Wikipedia for example. Help the reader to imagine what kind of world this tech enables.
olah_1··on Go-Fed: ActivityPub in Go
Can this run on a mobile device similar to Matrix’s Dendrite server running on mobile?
olah_1··on Spiral’s Homomorphic Encryption – Is This the Future of Privacy?
This could be used with Nostr[1] to add a ton of privacy! The added privacy would even be a reason to pay for using the server.

As of now, a lot of privacy is lost when you actually look at Nostr events. There are servers that check to see if a user has paid before they execute the request too[2].

olah_1··on Scaling Mastodon in the face of an exodus
For what it's worth, I remember someone shared Pleroma code in the Elixir forum and some veterans there said it was a very non-standard way of organizing an Elixir codebase.

It could be possible that Pleroma is not very idiomatic Elixir / OTP.

olah_1··on Scaling Mastodon in the face of an exodus
> Many instances are quick to block single user Pleroma instances

Do you think this makes Mastodon look good? Quite the opposite.

olah_1··on A cost model for Nim
I think this is because it takes more stylistic influence from Oberon than it does from Python.
