okhobb··on UBS Acquires Wealthfront for $1.4B
Not sure I'm following the "more like 14%" ... can you explain that calculation?
okhobb··on On Leaving Facebook
Starting a company is not fun for most engineers. Way more fun to get paid (a smaller amount, but way above "average") to hack at a company that has already found product-market fit. Replit doesn't have a Facebook-size audience, but it's still millions of people who you can reach with your work.
okhobb··on An anatomy of Bitcoin price manipulation
IPO "pop" is a bit of pejorative usually referring to the deliberate underpricing of an IPO so that the investment bankers' big clients can get a quick profit, the difference between the IPO price and the first available exchange price. In the context of this thread, an example of Wall Street sleaze.
okhobb··on Ready for an N95? Here's how to find a high-quality one that fits you well
Are you testing yourself constantly to make sure you're not exposing others? The pernicious feature of COVID is the asymptomatic nature of many infections.
okhobb··on On the Y Combinator Summer 2021 batch
Sounds much like the old saw: "we only hire the best!"

Do any VCs strive to invest in, say, the second quartile of YC batches?

okhobb··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
It's hard as a new grad to know how to always be on the same page as your manager, much less your skip-level. But, you've now learned the lesson. While fresh it would be a good time to be a bit humble and even a little contrite. Admit that everyone was not on the same page, and proactively ask for weekly 1:1 with your manager and biweekly/monthly with your skip-level. They are there to help grow you in your young career.

Also, maybe go on an interview or two. Can't hurt to have the confidence that other offers are possible if this goes further south.

okhobb··on The Demise of Scientific American
I really liked the Powers of Ten article / film / book originated within SA which certainly doesn't justify any current editorial choices, but is I hope a fun video for anyone who hasn't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fKBhvDjuy0
okhobb··on Don't Waste the Good Days
You can even hold more than one concurrently I hear!
okhobb··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
I've never been in the situation of a significantly down price over more than a year. Is it normal that the firm will give 'refreshers' to get back to the target comp in that case?
okhobb··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
No this is actually true. Most stocks do go down (or at least only match much less risky investments like short-term bonds), but the stock market goes up because some stocks go up a lot. This is why all investors diversify. For example, the Russel 3000 Index goes up ~10% a year because they remove bad stocks and replace them with ones that seem better. But, employment at a single company with stock-based compensation is a concentrated bet on that single stock during the employment timeframe.

Recently learned this from the excellent and very pithy Michael Batnick blog https://theirrelevantinvestor.com/2020/09/10/most-stocks-suc... who was citing https://wpcarey.asu.edu/department-finance/faculty-research/...

okhobb··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
The market assumes that Tesla will be much more than selling cars. The scope is more "anything electricity or climate change related" (i.e. very broad) combined with a focus on vertical integration in each business unit.
okhobb··on The Catherine Project: A new experiment in liberal education
The entirety of the four-year undergraduate curriculum is centered around great books, and there are no specific majors.

okhobb··on NPM package ‘ua-parser-JS’ with more than 7M weekly download is compromised
Got it. Yea I agree that's useful and easy mitigation, and I'm sure enterprise users would certainly pay for other safety labeling/filtering/signing of packages.
okhobb··on NPM package ‘ua-parser-JS’ with more than 7M weekly download is compromised
A large part of npm's staggering success is the very low friction to publish packages. I worry that any mitigation that slows down the publishing side of things would kill innovation in the ecosystem.
okhobb··on Why nobody hires junior developers and what happens next
Is the hiring manager invariably under 35 in these instances also?
okhobb··on Rent The Runway S-1 IPO
She's great but also bailed 5 years ago. Perhaps there is signal in that fact.
okhobb··on Where is the scrutiny over FDA’s role in the overdose epidemic?
The FDA's biggest (only?) obvious enormous win was with blocking https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide
okhobb··on Regulators urge safety recall of Peloton treadmill after child dies
The innovation is creating an internet-scale audience for the best / most charismatic fitness instructors.
