ohmaigad··on Common security issues with crypto websites and APIs
Your description about the issue is sketchy, there is nothing wrong with disabled input fields but it it sounds like you are making that an issue while the actual issue would be parsing those fields in the backend.
ohmaigad··on Morgan Stanley to Shift About $120B of Assets to Germany
Money plays a big role but things like single market, Schengen area, unified standards/rules are a convenience for me as a EU citizen. I didn't shop often some specialized UK shops but now it is going to be more painful because of customs etc.
ohmaigad··on Show HN: This website is valid JSON
What exactly is the point of this when you could have pure JSON as a hidden form value without any of the "hacks" or worries about content type...
ohmaigad··on Self-host your fonts for better performance
The funny thing is that many sites today will serve their static assets via CDN so the article is basically saying switch from one CDN to another.
ohmaigad··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
I have a hard time believing 1.J.[1] could be enforced as it sounds like you cannot sell your MAC, use it in a work or school environment. Apple can't risk to prove the point in court because if it is enforceable no organisation will touch their products.
ohmaigad··on New bike chain claims to be faster, more durable
You can't/shouldn't shift under load with a derailleur either. Pinion gearbox has an option of 18 gears with a 600%+ ratio while something like SRAM Eagle 1x12 has 500% ratio. I don't know about the efficiency but i think something like this should be the future - https://www.pinkbike.com/news/allen-millyard-part-1-2008.htm... or maybe there is proper reason why nothing like this has come into the market - shifting without pedalling or under load, closed system (don't care about dirt/water) and no noise.
ohmaigad··on European Parliament vote takes another big step toward ‘right to repair’
Unless the companies based elsewhere don't want to sell their products in the worlds 2nd largest market your argument makes no sense. A product from outside of EU still needs to comply with the EU standards so where is the advantage?
ohmaigad··on European Parliament vote takes another big step toward ‘right to repair’
> by encouraging standardisation of spare parts for the sake of interoperability and innovation, while upholding product safety requirements;

Encouraging is not the same as required.

> by giving actors of the repair industry, including independent repairers, and consumers access free of charge to the necessary repair and maintenance information, including information on diagnostic tools, spare parts, software and updates, needed to perform repairs and maintenance, while keeping in mind the imperatives of consumer safety, without prejudice to Directive (EU) 2016/943;

> Directive (EU) 2016/943 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 8 June 2016 on the protection of undisclosed know-how and business information (trade secrets) against their unlawful acquisition, use and disclosure.

You sound like the companies who are against right of repair by claiming copyright as an issue while changing a battery or a screen in a smartphone has nothing to do with your IP.

ohmaigad··on European Parliament vote takes another big step toward ‘right to repair’
I don't really get where the idea about this applying only to phones, tablets and laptops comes from as the actual proposal says products and not those specific categories. It also specifically mentions "independent repairers" as well as consumers themselves should have access to all the tools/information/parts. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2020-0318...
ohmaigad··on Guitar Center files for bankruptcy
Maybe the fact that EU has VAT? The final consumer price might be the same in US and EU but manufacturer can charge US retailers more because the sales tax is small compared to VAT.
ohmaigad··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
Polestar published their transparency report which states that their fully electric Polestar 2 compared to a Volvo XC40 will break even in CO2 emissions after 112k km (Global energy mix), 78k km (European energy mix) and 50k km (wind energy).

ohmaigad··on Using Matrix to replace proprietary and centralized chat apps
The difference is in marketing. Gmail is a service with its own official app and so on. Matrix is a protcol, you can't market a protocol to regular people. Other than techies, nobody cares how their chat works as long it works so if you want to gain traction you market Element as the new hot messaging app and not Matrix the protocol.
ohmaigad··on Google Takeout: Export a copy of your data in Google services
Black hair = PII, address = PII, drives black BMW = PII, any of this information together with other information could be used to identify an individual and that is exactly the issue. It is like saying that one brick is a house just because multiple bricks can make a house. If you gather enough data you can potentially point to specific individual. Just like unique PC fingerprinting - gather enough data points so that the fingerprint is unique.
ohmaigad··on Apple's apps bypass firewalls like LittleSnitch and LuLu on macOS Big Sur
Stock with i9, 16GB RAM, Radeon 5500m, 1TB SSD
ohmaigad··on Gitlab Blocked Iranians’ Access
It is not a nuance, it is a terrible precedent showing that Russia can just come and take away a sovereign states territory. It is like a bigger tougher person coming into your home and starting to live there and there is nobody who is going to help you.
ohmaigad··on Apple's apps bypass firewalls like LittleSnitch and LuLu on macOS Big Sur
I also have 2019 MBP16 and i am using a dock/charging on the left side - i think the system froze once in a year so i don't seem to have this issue.
ohmaigad··on Tesla cancels its ‘no questions asked’ 7-day return policy
It makes no sense to say that ID.3 is a more reasonable competitor to Zoe or e-208 when the wheelbase difference to those cars is bigger than to Model 3 (+~18cm to Zoe, +~22cm to e-208, -~11cm to Model 3). Unfortunately there seems to be no info about passenger volume because then we could actually compare it to lets say EPA size rating etc. Even going by regular car terms the 208 competitor is VW Polo while ID.3 is bigger than Golf...
ohmaigad··on Tesla cancels its ‘no questions asked’ 7-day return policy
Mercedes only has EQC which isn't even being sold in the USA and BMW has no good EVs (i3 is a niche product). I don't know about USA but i think that in Europe Tesla biggest competitors are actually "lower" tier manufacturers like Hyundai, KIA, Renault, Nissan, VW and the only premium competitor is Audi.
ohmaigad··on Google’s Search Preference Menu Eliminates DuckDuckGo
Term BMW - in Google, 2nd result is the local site while in DDG there is no local result at all. Sure, i can check the Region option and it will show up, however the region option completely messes up search results for different terms because when i search for a different thing half of results are from Japanese sites and not even English (i am not close to Japan). Another Google thing that i like is that there is a date for posts which DDG doesn't seem to have unless i am missing it in the settings.

ohmaigad··on Court dismisses Genius lawsuit over lyrics-scraping by Google
> The Ninth Circuit affirmed that any data that required no authorization to access and was freely available by default was fair game for scraping. As the court pointed out, ‘authorization’ to access data is implicit unless steps are taken to restrict general access.

Part of Linkedin vs HiQ ruling.

ohmaigad··on Facebook sues EU antitrust regulator for excessive data requests
What are you talking about? Your employer shouldn't have access to your private activities in the first place. Just because you are out of office and you send a company email doesn't make it private.
ohmaigad··on Ways to make a web component
> For me, the most interesting aspect was that it's part of standards, requiring no dependency, so it means that I can use this app for decades without having to maintain it.

Doesn't really make sense because for JS frameworks and for the "pure" component the dependency is the same - browser. If i don't have to maintain a project i can just pick whatever is the current version of React/Vue/Other and have the project running as long as the browser doesn't break/change something.

ohmaigad··on The Future of Online Identity Is Decentralized
Then with cash it is even easier as it doesn't leave any digital trace.
ohmaigad··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
This really shouldn't be left to interpretation, both Article 7(4) and Recital 42 define what is "freely given consent" and in no way limits the actions i can take as a site owner. It is clear that a "cookie wall" isn't considered a "freely given consent" so you can't process personal data based on that.
ohmaigad··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
I have read this and (IANAL) view this as a definition for what is "freely given consent". If you force users to give consent in order to use service, it isn't freely given consent. It doesn't say that you must provide the service.
ohmaigad··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
> GDPR says they have to ask you first (usually in the form of a giant irritating banner as soon as you walk in the door) and that if you say no they have to let you buy your apple anyway.

Can you link to source for this (the part that says you can't deny access)?

ohmaigad··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
I don't see how the first option is not GDPR-compliant. If the privacy policy page doesn't process personal data there is no consent needed.
ohmaigad··on Twitter hides Donald Trump tweet for “glorifying violence”
It reads like the specific action taken must be in "good faith" and has nothing to do with selective enforcement. The "Fact check" label also shouldn't fall under "restrict" or "availability".
ohmaigad··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
It is the "if you aren't with us you are against us" mentality. Any opposing opinion (even when based on valid arguments) is labeled as hate speech.
