ogdoad··on A Third of Antidepressants Are Prescribed for Something Else
Wasn't a dismissal, rather a comment, and technical language aside it stands as true: being happy "solves" problems collaterally, by rendering us oblivious to them.
ogdoad··on A Third of Antidepressants Are Prescribed for Something Else
It was intentionally reductive :)
ogdoad··on Ask HN: How to connect Alexa to a standing desk?
Second Google result for "alexa control standing desk" should help you, or Reddit.
ogdoad··on Massive child porn site is hiding in plain sight
That this thread was flagged demonstrates our knee-jerk bias on such subjects.
ogdoad··on If We Can Put a Man on the Moon, Why Can’t We Put a Man on the Moon?
Because putting a man on the moon would be putting a man on the moon!
ogdoad··on Darwin Was a Slacker and You Should Be Too
I'll get to it, eventually.
ogdoad··on Show HN: A game my 12-year-old daughter wrote
"You can only solve it by doing the crime yourself." They would call this "warning signs" after the fact.
ogdoad··on You are listening to San Francisco
OTOH, censoring what info you let through is, well, censoring.
ogdoad··on The Archimedean Spiral
What about it?
ogdoad··on Zero-Width Characters: Invisibly fingerprinting text
Actually thrice: lines -> ones.
ogdoad··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
Less HN!
ogdoad··on The 3DO: The birth of my cynicism
A chess set goes a long way further than any crappy videogame, and plays well around a campfire too. </bias>
ogdoad··on BlackBerry will shutter its app store on December 31st, 2019
It'll then go out of business again, because nobody will want to drive with a trackball.
ogdoad··on Life Inside a Secret Chinese Bitcoin Mine (9 Min Video)
Setups like this completely invalidate any individual effort.
ogdoad··on US Federal Ban on Making Lethal Viruses Is Lifted
Setting the stage for every biohazard movie ever made.
ogdoad··on We Only Have Hours Left to Stop the NSA Expansion Bill
Just to be clear, you _are_ talking about opinion biasing pools here, just on the side of the good guys?
ogdoad··on We Only Have Hours Left to Stop the NSA Expansion Bill
Only two creatures isn't really possible. It isn't even an ecosystem, it's a Game of Life simulation.
ogdoad··on Why It’s OK to Block Ads (2015)
If we cut down all these pesky trees we'll be able to enjoy the beautiful flowers of the forest. Where does that leave the forest though? The net has a problem with noise, not space.
ogdoad··on Mr Robot S02E01 easter egg
Spoiler alert; I think they gave away the point of the second season in -- how to put it -- bringing the perspective of the other both into play and under doubt: jub jnf chfurq, naq jub erpnyyf jung? It's not just a disguised diatribe on mental health issues, or even drawing on a wider understanding and appreciation of such issues in its target demographic, it's more participatory and "phenomenological" than that.
ogdoad··on Off the Grid
>It is not about the numbers. It is _never_ about the numbers. Don’t let them tell you otherwise.

The ad midway probably has something to do with numbers, where 10,000 is better than 100.

ogdoad··on Europe drafts law to ban mobile roaming charges
I thought it was already passed law, to come into effect July 2014. Guess I was wrong. In any case, it'd be nice not to have roaming data charges.
ogdoad··on AMD Unleashes First-Ever 5 GHz Processor
finally, angry birds will be totally responsive!
ogdoad··on The Year of Dressing Formally (2008)
Now that all the hard problems of humanity have been solved, tenured professors may return to more pressing matters -- with style. Splendid!
ogdoad··on Solved first 10 Project Euler problems in R, available for hire.
Upvoted simply for being amusing. Beats any 'rockstar programmer' ad I've ever seen.
ogdoad··on A 75-Year Harvard Study Finds What It Takes To Live A Happy Life
They posed this question to the now over-aged Professor who started this study as a Bachelor's project.

He replied: "Tenure."

ogdoad··on Lisp In Summer Projects: Coding Competition
The language name is actually "lisp", it's the enlightened converts' enthusiasm that causes them to shout it from the treetops. One would guess.
ogdoad··on Synnefo + Ganeti = cloud software that works
Being a user of Synnefo/"Cloud" (and the ~Okeanos/"Ocean") systems for a little while now, I have to comment with a simple "wow!". The amount and quality of engineering that has gone into the project, as well as the quality of the offered service is staggering. Most people involved in some manner in the academic software engineering community (be it Greek or not) are accustomed to receiving products that might on the one hand "work", within finely specified limits, but are otherwise classified as more or less involved hacks. Well, Synnefo both works like a charm and gives off an air of harmony (in the integration of the components and the eventual end-user experience).

Kudos everybody on a job well done. Can't wait for the service to go public.

NB: The whole project is build on commodity hardware with opensource solutions binding everything together. A whitepaper on its design and implementation, and case studies for use etc, would be certainly lovely to read.

ogdoad··on Cave Complex Found Under Giza Pyramids
Well I suppose most have been hoping, not for a complex of dirty caves under the general Gizeh plateau, but for a big room under the Sphinx. At least I have been. Then again, research in the summer of '9 and publication immediately on September? Sounds fishy, but is a bit logical, coming from the author of the Cygnus Mystery (knock-off theory based on the general ideas of Hancock & Bauval, themselves a bit stretching it).

Symbolist Egyptology still has a long way to go, and a lot of cuckoos to leave behind I guess. Even so, Hawass' attitude has become truely totalitarian, and reminds one of the late 19th century US Patent Office, or Royal Academy of Sciences: We know everything, whatcha gonna say to us?

PS: The Rostau isn't directed downwards.

ogdoad··on Coding Horror: All Programming is Web Programming
Well one could lean on the anti-web/cloud-apps case a bit heavier taking into account the bits and pieces of paranoia that easily stem from a centrally-operated system, where admin is god, a big corp has your files etc. Capitalism goes BOFH I guess. Then again, centralization also evokes images of Brazil and the french Minitel system, which, all things considered, were quite cool (and the Minitel still holds some ground).

I suppose by talking of 'web programming' one immediatelly thinks of PHP, and thus the horror, but there are quite a few other things that are considered web programming and do not promote bad practices. Then again, if the Cloud is the wave of the future, we can but ride it out.

ogdoad··on Ask HN: Tips for coding at the beach (or in the sun)
Well, this is what God intended, of course. Beaches are for kicking back, don't fool yourself that you'll increase your productivity if you bring along a laptop: some times in life you just need to blow off some steam, kick back at the beach and maybe do absolutely nothing. Then, back at the (hopefully ergonomic) desk, with a clear head, you'll be able to concentrate five days' worth of work in three: be an effective slacker!
