ofek··on Show HN: Hatch – A modern project, package, and virtual env manager for Python
Thanks and great question! As Hatch does a bunch of different things, I'll just speak to the package management.

More or less, hatch manages packages based on environments, whereas pipenv does so based on projects.

When pip supports Pipfiles, hatch will as well. At that point, project based package management will be supported too.

Thanks for the kind words!

Hatch can replace Conda as a virtual env manager but doesn't really try to compete with it in regards to binary installs.

Hatch does try to detect when a Conda env is in use and will adjust the shell prompt accordingly. https://github.com/ofek/hatch/blob/59cfdd4a929240dd82b2e4e25...

install/uninstall/update just uses pip, so yes!

Working on that now!

Basically, it combines the core features of many disparate tools into a handful of commands so users have to type less things.

If I had to say what is truly novel here, it would be the virtual env management and shell support.

I'd be weary to conflate OSS with what you refer to as "researchware". Code coming from academia is notorious for poor reproducibility.
ofek··on Google Has Dropped Google Instant Search
Did anyone else notice they reduced the number of autocomplete fields from 10ish to 4? I really dislike this change for discoverability reasons.

Is there a way to change this?

ofek··on Announcing Rust 1.19
Wow, a break yielding a value from within a loop is awesome! Do any other langs have that?

Those integrations with other languages look awesome! I just wish there was a good one for Python.
ofek··on Top accessibility complaints from people with disabilities
I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy and due to weakness can only use a mouse + on-screen keyboard.

My biggest gripe is sites that load with focus on an element that doesn't allow me to scroll down via the down arrow. This forces me to click the middle of the page to continue navigation via OSK.

Bad: https://circleci.com/gh/wbond/asn1crypto (can't even page down) https://pypi.python.org/pypi (new pypi might change this)

Good: https://www.youtube.com https://www.quora.com

Definitely never.
ofek··on Air carriers are still failing people with disabilities
As a wheelchair user (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) I can tell you the article left out one of the worst things airlines do. From what I can tell, they offer crew absolutely no training on how to handle electric wheelchairs (very brittle and expensive). I've flown ~22 times in my life and 10 times they completely broke my chair; stripped joystick, tire came off twice, cut wires (how?), electronics fried by some unknown liquid, etc. This has happened with AA, United, AirTran, and Delta.

edit: I should also mention that I even cover the chair in multiple layers of bubble wrap.

I wish I could just bring my chair next to everyone else. The standard seats are difficult to sit in for long flights.

If np.concatenate accepts any iterable, removing the brackets is what you want to do there.
ofek··on Show HN: Bit – Python Bitcoin library now 10x faster than OpenSSL
Author here!

Bit now uses libsecp256k1 for all elliptic curve operations, which is the heavily optimized C library used by Bitcoin Core.

Here are some benchmarks: https://ofek.github.io/bit/guide/intro.html#why-bit

This also gives Bit deterministic signatures via RFC 6979.
