ofek··on Neuralink patient controls games by thinking during interview
This makes me very excited! I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2 [1] and I have lost most of my physical capabilities save for 2-3 fingers and of course speech. Although I am now on Nusinersen [2] treatments I am still becoming weaker over time, albeit extremely slowly.

It brings me comfort to know that such a fallback will eventually exist, should I need one.

Note that specialists are saying that another promising drug from Scholar Rock [3] would probably prevent any further weakening if used in conjunction with my current treatment. Unfortunately, the FDA takes a long time to approve new medications and I have heard this one is particularly special because there is potential for abuse by athletes.

ofek··on Uv: Python packaging in Rust
Exciting stuff! I view Hatch [1] as becoming the Cargo for Python because it's already close and has an existing (and growing) user base but I can definitely see depending on this for resolution and potentially not even using pip after it becomes more stable.

One day I would love to use this device because for some reason my tongue has not experienced any degradation in all of my life so it would be nice to know I have a fallback, should I need one.

ofek··on Using Alpine can make Python Docker builds 50× slower
As mentioned in an addendum at the bottom of the page, wheels can now target Alpine. You can try it yourself using the example package from OP:

docker run --rm python:3.11-alpine pip install pandas

ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Thanks!

1. I view that as out of scope but you can always embed your own distribution https://ofek.dev/pyapp/latest/config/#distribution-embedding

2. https://pypi.org/project/cowsay/

ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Yes if you want to build the binaries in containers you could mount a directory where the artifacts should go.
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
You would have to compile the binary on the target platform. Eventually I will support cross compiling but even then there will still be one binary for every platform/architecture pair.
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Yup that's right!
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Sorry about that! What you said is basically correct: this is for distributing Python applications. You configure via environment variables at build-time and the binary you ship to users who then run it. It could be a single name/version pair or more complex options like embedding a wheel or being defined by a requirements file.
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
- This is a tool to build binaries for Python applications. It could have just as been written in any other language that can produce binaries.

- Yes that is correct, applications are configured at build-time with environment variables. For example, you could use just 2 environment variables like in that demo to build binaries for sqlite-utils. There are a bunch of examples of common use cases here: https://ofek.dev/pyapp/latest/examples/

As far as how this works at runtime, I won't be able to explain any better than this Mermaid diagram I made: https://ofek.dev/pyapp/dev/runtime/#initialization

ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Yes.
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Please let me know how it goes!
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
The main difference is it does no build sorcery. In the end, your code is running on a real installation on disk. Therefore, there is no chance for extension modules to fail.
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Can you please let me know how your experience goes after trying this?
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Can you please let me know how your experience is? Feel free to even open an issue on the repo!
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
Yes it will that is exactly correct! That particular example actually was after I was reading how to set up Stable Diffusion and other AI stack stuff.
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
You can pack a Python interpreter but by default it downloads it (if not already cached)
ofek··on Show HN: PyApp – runtime installer for Python applications
I think this is the most common pattern where you wish to execute a script based on a requirements file: https://ofek.dev/pyapp/latest/examples/#dependency-file-with...
ofek··on Show HN: Hatch v1.8.0 – platform installers, Python management and built-in Ruff
Hatch itself still is written in and runs on Python but it uses its own distribution which is set up at runtime once. The goal is to provide an experience similar to other ecosystems like Rust and Go. You download the tool that does everything rather than something (Python) as a requirement for executing the tool.
ofek··on Vertical Tabs in Visual Studio Code
This is a long-standing feature request that has not made any progress nor can I tell that there is a plan to work on this at all in the near future: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/108264
ofek··on The Python dictionary dispatch pattern
That's not at all valid syntax, this does not work.
ofek··on Building the Future of X
The level of schadenfreude in these comments is hitherto unseen. Whatever your view of the management happens to be let's not forget that small features or changes to large systems are not as easy as one might think. That viewpoint is literally a meme [0].

Do you mean the Python tracing library does not work out-of-the-box?

disclaimer: I work there but not on the APM team

Just a Jira/GitHub user, as we are
ofek··on Show HN: Datadog QA – TUI for Jira users to perform QA of future GitHub releases
This workflow has historically worked for us quite well. We merge in features rapidly so having GitHub be the source of truth for activity that needs to be tested is beneficial for never accidentally missing items.

FYI we used to use Trello (using the same workflow) but switched to Jira and wrote this tool in the process. Jira aggregation in the web app can be quite slow so actually this tool makes tracking a bit nicer as well.

ofek··on Show HN: Datadog QA – TUI for Jira users to perform QA of future GitHub releases
We install the tool and run the documented actions for the Agent repo. Example command: https://datadoghq.dev/ddqa/actions/status/

I'm not sure if you thoroughly read what I wrote but I did respond to them. This is not a false accusation as you are claiming, you can check the contents of the repo in the current state.

Per the licenses they can copy but they must maintain attribution which has not been done.
