oemera··on WWDC 2012 Session Videos
Apple developers need to sign a NDA with the creation of an developer account. These videos are under NDA cause it is beta software and confidential. This is the reason why you need an account to watch those videos.

BUT even if they weren't under NDA this is totally ok! Going to the conference would have cost you minimum 1 week time and >1500$. You get all of this for free after only four days the conference happened. The only thing they ask for is an account and you are complaining about this? I will never understand such attitude!

oemera··on Surface changes everything: Android will be 3rd ranked tablet OS inside a year
Why don't you just grab a MacBook Air 11" with you and have everything you have ever used in your "bag". Small, light, enough processing power and no sacrifices using your notebook. Why on earth would you want a tablet which you could transform into a half assed notebook?

Would you buy a motorcycle and try to drive it like a car?

oemera··on Surface changes everything: Android will be 3rd ranked tablet OS inside a year
Did they ship any new device this year or yesterday? I didn't see any surfaces in action so it is still vapourware.
oemera··on Hacker Workspaces
This is the exact feeling I get when I have to work with a Windows PC. They are cheap, feel like a brick of plastic and are not a bit what they promise to be. But I found a solution. I just stopped using them. I hate them and I hope not to touch one again in my life.

So maybe you should consider leaving Macs and Apple devices alone to have a happier life I guess.

oemera··on Hacker Workspaces
I don't mean to be that guy but this kind of comments are getting on my nerves lately. If you don't have something to contribute just don't write an comment. I mean think about your comment and ask yourself if it helped someone. I would be surprised if you think yes.

A hacker is not a hacker because of the hardware he/she uses. It's not the books he/she reads. It's about being unconventional, using things you are productive with, finding out what would make things better and you name it. It's not about being not clean and reading Donald Knuth's books.

Please either stop writing such things or simply go away.

oemera··on Ask HN: Do quality web graphics, design and layout actually help businesses?
Really good question. I have I asked this question to myself a lot of times when I actually buy things or when I'm looking for a service I could use.

From my experience I can definitely say that I never bought something because it looked good. But when I had two alternatives and one looked better than the other I catched myself tending to the better looking service which was not always the best service provider. A company which has what I need and has also a great design / UX gets a big plus point.

But what I also learned is that a good structured site with intuitive navigation is really good makes really solid impression. By intuitive I mean guessing where you could find informations you are looking for. For example documentation of the API they are providing.

oemera··on Dell Announces A Linux Laptop Designed For Developers
I own nothing from Dell beside my 23" Ultra Sharp monitor and I will tell you that I will never ever buy anything from Dell again.

The monitor is really awesome at its price point and I don't want to miss it but the service Dell is doing is the worst I have ever seen.

Let me tell you why. When I bought the monitor I was really happy to get a 3 year ultra warranty service from Dell for free. So the monitor gets shipped and I plug into my MacBook Air. The monitor works but the colors are really bad like a 16 bit color scheme. I call the Dell "ultra service" and tell them just what happened. After changing three different employees the guy on the other hand asks me what happens and tell him that the screen looks broken when I plug it into my MacBook and his answer is "oh we don't Mac's cause Apple doesn't conform standard graphical ports. I really don't know about Mac's so I can't help you. Don't you have a "normal PC" to plug it in?". At this point it was clear to me that I would never buy something again from Dell!

It turned out that the monitor was broken and my next monitor worked just fine with my MacBook. the monitor was not replaced by Dell but by the shop I bought from cause they swear that the fault was my Mac.

Next time I will pay the extra money and buy something from Apple again. They don't do shit like that...

oemera··on Apple reportedly to release US$799 MacBook Air in 3Q12
I really don't think so. Imagine every app with custom images / icons would need an update and this is way harder than updating iOS apps. The App Store is pretty "new" business and it is really fast but on the Mac it is kind of different. These things take longer.

Imagine Microsoft would need to release a version with retina graphics. This would take ages instead of weeks!

Another point is that it would cause fragmentation in the whole Mac / MacBook ecosystem.

I really don't think that this will happen in the next time!

oemera··on Show HN: Weekend Project - SlideWriter for iPad
Awesome solution for something I never thought would be possible without a jailbreak!

However the icon for the slide button could be better and simpler to understand. Maybe by showing a standard slider.

oemera··on Two brilliant moves that helped create the Apple iOS powerhouse
First time I heard that the iPhone 4S rattles when you put it down. Had a couple of those in my hands and it felt like a iPhone 4.

Disclaimer: I have a iPhone 4.

oemera··on Two brilliant moves that helped create the Apple iOS powerhouse
While it may be true that the old processor costs Apple more to build than the new models I strongly believe that they didn't want to test the device again.

The device worked as it is and it will work in the next year as it worked so why should we change it? No costs on this side to find. We can argue about costs and which of them would be higher but either way I think they choose the way which fits Apple best.

Apple wants to mess with new stuff and not with old already gone low-end model phones.

I don't know how non-tech-users see the nexus. I never seen one have it. I don't know why but it seem that the majority was bought by techies compared to a 3 GS which was bought from all kind of people including a lot of females which argue "I don't need the latest stuff".

oemera··on Two brilliant moves that helped create the Apple iOS powerhouse
I have to admit that this is true and it was a very disappointing for the user-base to see that their phone got a unacceptable performance after the update. However Apple learned from it's lessons and the same thing didn't happen with 3 GS and the iPhone 4S.
oemera··on Two brilliant moves that helped create the Apple iOS powerhouse
I strongly disagree. A phone which was mind blowing awesome this year will be pretty good next year and for a lot people attractive even after two years because you have decent hardware and the latest software. If you buy an low budget model Android phone, you get the Android version which was released 4 years ago. I think no one would buy an 3 GS at this point if Apple would sell it with iOS 3.

A lot of my friends have a iPhone 3 GS and they are happy with it and see no need to change. It's not the same with Android low-end models.

Please don't get me wrong I don't want to bash Android here but I want to make how smart this decision was / is. People are buying the old hardware ( which was awesome) and getting it with new the software for a good price.

Maybe I should also point out that people have also seen the same product last year and friends using it. Think about it. Would you buy a new phone which just came out as low-end model or would you buy the product from last year for a better price? Apple shows that the second choice wins.

oemera··on Show HN: Hackful Europe iOS App
Hi,

I'm the developer of the app. I have been working on a iOS app for Hackful Europe lately. Since the API is now ready to access it is time to show you guys all I have got.

The app is really simple and puts everything from hackful.com into your pocket. You can

  * login,
  * up vote,
  * coment on something,
  * reply,
  * submit and
  * share the articles
The project is fully open source under MIT license and is also in the App Store by now. You can start reading my code and contribute to it on GitHub if you like.

Please tell me what you think. What can be done better?

Hope you like it

oemera··on How I lost access to my Google account today
Why screwed? MobileMe migrated to iCloud seemlessly and you had to pay nothing. Plus the service now is even better for free! I don't see that people get screwed.
oemera··on The curious case of our iOS app (Prey)
You gain the trust of users to the platform. If I don't want to give out my data I should be able to do just that and this argument is really huge from user perspective. Apple says if you are using GPS coordinates please tell and show the user that you do so.

There are a lot of people who don't know anything about IT and Software like my sister. She just doesn't care about such stuff. So she doesn't know who is using GPS and who is not. Hell, she even doesn't know what GPS signals really are. And she only wants to know: a) are you using my data, ask me first so I can say I want it or I don't want it _and_ b) if you are using my data, show and visualize that you are using it cause otherwise it might be that I don't know it.

I'm certain that this rules can help gain quality and help people to get an understanding for the device and what is going on _without_ having IT background.

oemera··on The curious case of our iOS app (Prey)
Oh come on! Why is everybody complaining about Apple when all major platform do this controlling this now. What about payment methods on Android? If you don't use Google Payment you are out. It's the same kind of rule so don't put this things in a argument like "Apple iOS have restrictions and Android has not. So why not use Android"

Ever thought about how good the iOS platform is for developers AND users? Give some credit man.

oemera··on Paul Graham PyCon 2012 keynote
I don't mean to be harsh but after reading the article I couldn't listen to the "Uhhh Ehmmmm"s anymore.

Was he just reading the transcript to the guys? A keynote should be without any "uhh"s and "ehmmm"s otherwise you will not get audience IMO.

oemera··on Apple A5X quad-core confusion, explained
At the end of the day this is what counts. Is it fast or not. What else are more cores for if not for more speed and performance.

I don't like that attitude calling someone not hacker-like because he doesn't cares about cores! It's all about creating something better and that has nothing to do with counting cores.

oemera··on I Have No Idea [Why Apple Featured My App]
But maybe all these reviews and downloads came after getting featured by Apple. I surely believe that your App will be downloaded a lot more times if you are highlighted by Apple and being highlighted by Apple could mean to people "that the App is definitive worth it and good" and so they probably more likely to give good ratings.

I don't know just my 2 cents.

oemera··on Steve Losh's .vimrc
I think it is all about productivity and if he feels or thinks he is more productive with these additions then it is really good for him. I don't think anyone should use plain vim because it's 'way it should be done'.
oemera··on BankSimple invites first customers; rebrands itself as Simple
Can I who told you that? I'm German and I have never heard that "Simpel" as the German noun is associated with idiot or idiotic thinks.

Simpel just means simple. Maybe it is not seen like the simpleness which American people try to express with the word but either it just means simple.

I love to have more simpleness in Germany. Please do consider to expand to Germany or Europe!

oemera··on Programmers' salaries at Google $250k (and up)
I would go a little deeper and so that you just need those who are really thrilled about what they are going to create. They need to believe into what they doing. Those are the ones who make the difference.

I'm really curious about how far this game will go.

oemera··on Programmers' salaries at Google $250k (and up)
I think it's on HN because such salaries will hunt talented or not even good engineers down and if this happens it could be a really hard time for startups. Let's be real for a second without engineers ideas are worthless and if all of those good ones are at big companies which gives a out a lot of cash what can you do as a startup? I don't it is bad as it sounds but it could be tough and it could kill a lot of startups in future if this attitude by big companies grows.

In the contrast: you don't have to start your company in the Valley to be good and maybe it can save you a lot of headaches and money to not do so.

But at the end the source of this problem is different: the Valley just needs more engineers to get things rolling.

oemera··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
Yes if they think your App has errors and is not self explaining or working properly it is ok to reject your App.

Is it ok that you can only develop for the Playstation if you are a game development studio? Yes I think so too.

oemera··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
I can tell you why. Cause there are a lot of people who are just talking BS to harm the other "group". I will repeat it till my dead I never had any issues with Macs, iPhones, iPads and iPods. I can't reconstruct issues people have and until I see a iPhone which crashes 5 times a day I won't believe it.

Plus if you have so much trouble with you phone, what about calling Apple and telling them your issue. When I called last time because a failure they send me immediately a brand new device. Sorry mate but something seems odd.

I don't want to attack you personal, it just seems that a lot of people are trying to talk BS about Apple products.

oemera··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
There are many many Android smartphones with many many different hardware stats. Even with low hardware stats to be cheap at the selling point. I can understand that this can lead to a lot of bug reports but if you have 5 devices and a handful of OS versions this is way better testable and fixable.
oemera··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
Oh come on! As if you would be handcuffed by using a iOS device. Think about all those viruses and all those people who are not IT-guys, they don't need this complicated "you can do everything but you need to read a bunch of books before"-thing.

It is simple: Just make it easy and iOS is easy. There is one AppStore not 7 like on the Android. There are iOS updates for the newest devices not like Android for those who are the chosen ones. I could go on and on.

If you want crappy software and hardware back then please go and support those crappy software and hardware makers. I will stick to simpleness and convenience.

oemera··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
Why is it that people always complain about iPhone and iOS but no one can reconstruct these things "issues". I had 4 iPhones till this day with all iOS Versions on the market and I never, ever saw or heard a problem about "springboard is crashing 5 times a day". NEVER.
