odysseus··on Launch HN: Keeper Tax (YC W19) – Find tax writeoffs in bank statements
Note that some large U.S. banks already automatically categorize credit card expenses in a single neat report at the end of the year, for free.
odysseus··on Ten days in Shenzhen
I was confused as the article keeps referring to “TEGES” with no clear explanation of what this acronym means. After digging around on the internet (in vain), I re-read the top portion of the article and figured out that it must mean “The Essential Guide to Electronics in Shenzhen”, which is apparently some sort of crowd-sourced/crowd-funded book ...
odysseus··on Google Has Started Penalizing Mobile Websites with Intrusive Pop-Up Ads
Check out verify.ly to get some surprising info on what iOS apps are doing behind the scenes. There are plenty of apps that have the ability read your full contact data or your calendar without ever asking you. Skitch, Amazon, and Skype do one or more of those. I have deleted them and gone back to the web app for Amazon. FaceTime replaced Skype, and I'm stuck with Markup in Photos as a poor replacement for Skitch.

Of course there are plenty of safe apps that do not abuse APIs - for example, the Deliveries app by JuneCloud.

odysseus··on Automatic: Your Smart Driving Assistant
How does Automatic compare to Verizon/Delphi's coming dongle/app that does a lot of the same things? We don't know pricing for the Delphi dongle yet, but it does appear to include unlocking/locking the car for certain models:

Automatic's GUI definitely looks nicer. If Automatic could automatically unlock the door when I come near the car after being away from it from a period of time, that would make this a must buy for me.

odysseus··on The weirdest (but working) iPhone 4 reception trick I have ever heard
If you don't have a glass nearby, this also works when putting your 3GS (and probably other phones as well) at the same angle inside an upside-down clear plastic CD spindle cover. Went from 2 to 4 bars. Took the phone out, dropped down to 2.
