odysseus··on Show HN: Nuanced – Help AI understand code structure, not just text
Would be good to see before & after examples of something Claude got wrong without your enrichment but got right with it included.
odysseus··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
Libraries buy ebooks with your property tax dollars. The more patrons read, the more copies they buy. Authors and publishers like this.

Yes, Numbers opens files much faster. Excel’s find, despite years of complaints, continues to not highlight the background color of what you’re looking for. Makes it tough to find what you need in a dense sea of cells.

odysseus··on My Notes on Apple Math Notes
Thanks, at least you can do it with an Apple Pencil or your finger. Seems like more of a demo than a feature if you can’t do it with typed text too.
odysseus··on My Notes on Apple Math Notes
In Apple Math Notes, why can't you type a simple list of numbers, either in a table or in columnar format, like:

239.12

+242.33

+673.34

-------

=

And get an answer after the equals sign? (a la Soulver) Isn't this an obvious use case? Was Apple trying really hard not to copy Soulver's implementation?

You can type them one after another on the same line and get an answer, but that's bad for readability. I want to add up numbers in a column like Soulver and a spreadsheet lets you do, and do that inside Notes.

odysseus··on Tesla Robotaxi
Weird, I have TPMS and it still works fine. I don’t have a Tesla though. Didn’t use slime though.
odysseus··on Tesla Robotaxi
Last flat I had, there was a giant Allen wrench stuck in the tire and it was rapidly leaking.

Filled it back up as much as I could with the included inflator kit, took it a big box store, they patched it up and was on my way.

Took maybe an hour total out of my day? No $ cost to me (under tire warranty)

odysseus··on What I tell people new to on-call
Anyone on-call or off that is woken in the middle of the night to attend to a page can take a paid 1/2 to 1 full day off (without recording it as PTO) the week after they're on-call. (amount depends on how long they were disrupted)

This is not official policy, but it's been the in-practice unwritten stance of every manager in every company I've worked at.

odysseus··on What I tell people new to on-call
Good advice in this article, especially the bits about communicating every 15-30 minutes depending on severity. Comms are invaluable for timeline/postmortems.

Also, for secondary/shadow on-calls, you will need to remind the primary to loop you in, as they will be busy.

Try not to be on-call too often, but also try not to be on-call too little. You need exposure to the latest types of events happening and don't want to get rusty. Once every 1.5 months is a good balance for me.

odysseus··on Cough or sneeze? How the brain knows what to unleash
My wife just read this thinking (at first) you were talking about flatulence.

We had a good laugh.

odysseus··on Cough or sneeze? How the brain knows what to unleash
Thanks, didn’t know about the rubbing your nostrils trick. Though sometimes I want to sneeze to get whatever triggered it out.
odysseus··on Cough or sneeze? How the brain knows what to unleash
Has there been any studies on whether it’s better to hold in sneezes (partially or fully) or let them fully out? I prefer letting it all out and it’s kind of messy but probably healthier. My wife kind of keeps half of it in.
odysseus··on Cough or sneeze? How the brain knows what to unleash
Looking into bright light and getting triggered for sneezing is called the photic sneeze reflex.

I’m one of the 18% (?) of the population with it, and it is hereditary.

I actually kind of like it, as if I need to sneeze all I need to do is look at a bright light.

odysseus··on Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright
Occasionally you can get the same Trader Joe’s private label products rebranded as Aldi merchandise for even cheaper at Aldi.
odysseus··on Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright
I used to price track when I moved to a new area, but now I find it way easier to just shop at 2 markets or big box stores that consistently have low prices.

In Europe, that would probably be Aldi/Lidl.

In the U.S., maybe Costco/Trader Joe's.

For online, CamelCamelCamel/Amazon. (for health/beauty/some electronics but not food)

If you can buy direct from the manufacturer, sometimes that's even better. For example, I got a particular brand of soap I love at the soap's wholesaler site in bulk for less than half the retail price. For shampoo, buying the gallon size direct was way cheaper than buying from any retailer.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy shown in the photo in the article is actually the very first piece of computer software I ever bought.

I remember purchasing it in a Babbages or something for $14 and being so excited.

Brought it home and ran it on a 286 with a monitor capable of displaying text in one color: amber

Just bought the iPad version. I am so excited to show my kids this when I get home from work tomorrow. They are going to be ecstatic.

The sounds bring back so many great memories.

odysseus··on How enterprise software is like baby clothing
If you wear pajamas to bed, imagine all button holes on the pajamas were replaced by Velcro. Now imagine the sound and comfort of the Velcro as you roll over at night.
odysseus··on How enterprise software is like baby clothing
I wouldn’t say they’re insanely expensive - we got 2 magnet sleep suits for $40. They’re super soft and really easy to put on the baby. Check out consignment stores specializing in baby/kids clothing for a good deal, or just buy new for $20-$40 each. So far, no blow-outs.
odysseus··on The Seattle Public Library is reducing maximum digital holds
> zero cost up front

I guess it depends on when you pay your property tax bill (or when your landlord does). I know I pay over $200/year in taxes to the local library, so my family tries to make heavy use of the place.
