obulpathi··on Google Picks Diane Greene to Expand Its Cloud Business
Not just Compute, Google Network, Cloud Storage, Container Engine (Kubernetese is OpenSource, so you can run it internally too), Cloud Shell, Pub/Sub, their new Cloud Console, are awesome.
obulpathi··on Google Picks Diane Greene to Expand Its Cloud Business
I know. Compared to Amazon's offering of MySQL, MariaDb, Aurora, SQL Server and Oracle, Google MySQL offering looks not so good. It's hard to persuade everyone to migrate to MySQL. Everyone has their own reason to use different databases.
obulpathi··on Google Picks Diane Greene to Expand Its Cloud Business
Relational Databases is one key area where Google Cloud can improve. Adding support for the most used databases (Maria, Postgres and may be Google own version of SQL-like AWS Aurora to support large data stores) and easing the migration path for companies to move their databases into Cloud can ease a lot of customer pain. This can accelerate the migration to Cloud much faster. It is very difficult for companies to move to Cloud and adopt NoSQL stores simultaneously.

Thats awesome!
obulpathi··on Kubernetes 1.1 Performance upgrades, improved tooling and a growing community
Implressed: "Kubernetese running thousand node clusters, and running over a million QPS against a single cluster"!
obulpathi··on How Amazon took control of the cloud
I have about 5 years experience with both AWS and Google Cloud (App Engine, Google Compute, ..). I agree that AWS has more services to offer than Google. Initially Google took the route of the App Engine and fell behind AWS. However, recently its Compute Engine and other related services like Container Engine, Datalab (IPython, Jupyter as a Service), Big Query, Dataproc, Pub/Sub and more started outshining their AWS counterparts. Google's network is way faster than AWS. AWS network is too slow and flaky. For anyone taking the route of microservies, Google Cloud offers a huge advantage. Google new cloud console (which is still in beta) is sleek and sexy. Google's cloud services are a pleasure to use compared to AWS (other than a few pain points). I recommend small and medium Cloud-based shops to relook into Google Compute again. Google Cloud is adding services to its arsenal at a super fast rate (much faster than AWS). Just take a look at their engineering blog: http://googlecloudplatform.blogspot.com/. In a year I see google Cloud overtake AWS in terms of the capability.
obulpathi··on Google Cloud Datalab – ipython as a service
Google is racing to overtake AWS. Datalab and Cloud Shell are some amazing products released by Google. Using Cloud Shell, you can orchestrate your infrastructure right from your browser. Using Datalab, you can do data science from the browser.
obulpathi··on Google Cloud Shell
This is perfect for services like Bastion, Gateways, CRON jobs.
obulpathi··on Lower Cost S3 Storage Option and Glacier Price Reduction
Yep, looks like AWS is catching up with Google in areas like these (Nearline, Container Engine).
obulpathi··on The Dataflow Model: Balancing Correctness, Latency, and Cost in Data Processing [pdf]
Wow ... this is awesome! Quoting from the paper, "live and breathe under the assumption that we will never know if or when we have seen all of our data, only that new data will arrive, old data may be retracted, and the only way to make this problem tractable". That's another amazing mindshift!
obulpathi··on Google ATAP: Welcome to Project Soli [video]
If someone were to integrate this into a smartphone/smartwatch as an input device and customize the software, it would be a killer project.
obulpathi··on Announcing Google Cloud Bigtable
Pretty impressed with the performance metrics: Reads/Writes 6ms@99% compared to Cassandra 300ms for read and 10 ms for write.
obulpathi··on Openstack Swift Golang implementation
I am an OpenStack developer. It's awesome to see Go in OpenStack! I love Python, but for projects that are too big, Go can bring in some static awesomeness!
obulpathi··on Ask HN: Do you meditate?
I am doing meditation for a year regularly (almost every day) and did another 2 years (once or twice a week). Keeps me calm and focused. Next month, I am going to this 10-day course Vipassana Meditation: https://www.dhamma.org/en/about/vipassana. Looking forward to it.
obulpathi··on Stripe: Bitcoin
Look at http://www.reversecoin.org/ Reversecoin allows transactions to be reversible within a specified period of time. Over time, I expect mechanisms like these to be build into Bitcoin itself. Disclaimer: I am the lead dev for Reversecoin.
obulpathi··on Reversecoin: First crypto-currency with “Reversible Transactions”
How it works: With Reversecoin, you can create two different kinds of accounts: Standard Accounts and Vault Accounts. Standard accounts behave very much like your Bitcoin accounts and allow you to send and receive money for daily purposes. Vault accounts behave much like you bank savings account, where you can deposit large amount of coins and keep them safe from hackers. Each vault account has a configurable timeout and is backed by two key pairs, one online and one offline. You only need online keypair to transfer coins from vault. When you transfer your coins using online keypair, your transactions get confirmed after they live in blockchain for the timeout period. If someone steals your online key pair and transfers coins to them, the transactions will have to wait in block chain for the timeout period. During which, you can use your offline key pair and reverse those transactions and restore your coins to your other address. You can also use your offline key pair for immediate transfer of coins in your Vault, instead of waiting for timeout period. In a sentence, Vault account has the ease of use of hot wallets (online account) and security of cold wallets (offline accounts).
