obtu··on Kevin Rose reflects on Digg, the dangers of outside investors, and his legacy
(MLP: Mindless Link Passing, a term that I think originates from kuro5hin)
obtu··on Oracle launches "a better alternative to CentOS"
They tried to make APIs copyrightable. That's about the same magnitude of evil as legalising software patents.
obtu··on GIT is the new FTP
I like this girror thing, it looks like it will fit my non-node projects much better than Capistrano's awkward git integration. (For some reason you linked to a fork, but it's no longer current)
obtu··on Prototype PHP interpreter using the PyPy toolchain - Hippy VM
I found this link, I assume you found the time to upload it?

obtu··on The Latest On Intelligence
Okay, I found the reference on page 10. Somehow my keyword search didn't work and we didn't number pages the same way.
obtu··on The Latest On Intelligence
IQ is one of those “look for the keys under the streetlight” things. It's for people who really care about intelligence being something measurable as a decimal number. In every study that isn't a meta-study like this one, the tasks that were measured are available and will tell more of the story.

Our minds are modular, studies measuring ability at precise tasks can improve our understanding of it. I wish people didn't try to make silly sweeping statements on nature vs nurture something that science has to care about.

The only justification for this paper is that it is debunking a book that was originally pseudoscience, but the whole discussion that followed that book is flawed for letting that book set the framing that intelligence boils down to one number.

obtu··on The Latest On Intelligence
It sounds like you are hijacking the paper to talk about a pet theory. Did you find a cite on p11 about DNB? They refer to cognitive exercise, but not using that particular method. Whether that method is effective or not is orthogonal to their point.
obtu··on GIT is the new FTP
No, the toroid one is much better because it changes the worktree to export the data. That way the git directory won't be exposed to the web server.
obtu··on Ask HN: How do you deploy a simple web project?
Do you know of ServerFault? The reason you shouldn't ask this on StackOverflow is that it is on-topic on sister-site ServerFault. Either you'll find a similar question, or you'll have the opportunity to ask yours.
obtu··on GIT is the new FTP
I know that, the bit I want to emphasize is that it won't be the mkdir argument that is on the same line.
obtu··on Google+ grows 43% in June
We mostly used ; in math classes.

For a set: { 1,2; 3,5; -12,1 }

Calculators that are otherwise internationalised force the dot convention.

obtu··on Google+ grows 43% in June
It's labelled "visitor", which is even more bogus (most measures might discriminate browsers, cookies, or IPs, which adds systemic errors in both directions).

According to jcampbell1, this is requests per domain from a traffic sample intercepted by ISPs, which means that Facebook like buttons and Google +1 buttons dominate. All we have is a 47% or so change in how many of those ISP logs contain +1 buttons.

obtu··on GIT is the new FTP
Seriously, try it. History expansion works on input lines separated by the user asking the shell to run them, it can't cross reference command arguments on the same command line.
obtu··on Google+ grows 43% in June
That's a reasonable explanation, but it's dishonest for Compete to put these numbers on a graph labelled "unique visitors". The Google+ poster didn't have any inkling about what the numbers represent.
obtu··on GIT is the new FTP
You mean "$_". !$ refers to the previous command in the history.
obtu··on Steam'd Penguins
It allows them to amortise porting efforts with sales on multiple platforms.
obtu··on Steam'd Penguins
To pinkbucket: you seem to have been hell-banned when your account was new. You will need a new account. My condolences.
obtu··on Steam'd Penguins
Also PPA-based, by the way.
obtu··on Google’s Marissa Mayer Tapped as Yahoo’s Chief
Steve Jobs and Zuckerberg were mentioned in this thread as examples of CEOs who can't be wrong and have revisionist memories.
obtu··on Varnish author criticizing HTTP/2.0 proposals
I would keep HTTP/1.1, as you suggest. SSL servers on cheap (sub-Raspberry Pi) embedded devices are a no-go for another reason: it is hard to keep the certificate unique and private. Embedded devices with smart cards might be workable.
obtu··on Major label uses DMCA to take down Romney ad of Obama crooning
Speedy or not, content identification wouldn't have recognised the lyrics from Obama's singing. YouTube's system is sold to users as a way to keep its DMCA safe harbour (YouTube to McCain in 2008: http://arstechnica.com/uncategorized/2008/10/youtube-to-mcca... ), and YouTube needs to own up if it goes beyond that.
obtu··on Dan Bull: Censored By Copyright For Protesting Being Censored By Copyright
Aaand here's a fresh one: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/07/major-label-uses-...

BMG made a claim on Obama's singing in a political ad.

I'm all for laws being applied strictly to politicians who have the power to challenge them or change them. YouTube's fair use defense can only kick in in ten days. It does show the DMCA is not compatible with free speech, and if anyone cared about that, the argument would be easier to make than in the Citizens United case.

obtu··on Varnish author criticizing HTTP/2.0 proposals
I regret missing out on that. Using those addresses? https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5156#section-2.3

That doesn't make the chicken-and-egg problem disappear. The best I could imagine is that it would allow IPv6 to downgrade to IPv4 using some sort of addition to the routing table. There's still no incentive to upgrade.

obtu··on Varnish author criticizing HTTP/2.0 proposals
The evil bit? I'm having a hard time coming up with something serious that would be enough to kill the internet as we know it.
obtu··on Varnish author criticizing HTTP/2.0 proposals
I was talking about performance, but: SNI addresses your first point. For the second point, whoever needs to enforce snooping already has to deal with SSL.
obtu··on Physical assault by McDonald's for wearing Digital Eye Glass
Those policies seem to be so that journalists don't go taking pictures on their own, but go through PR channels.
obtu··on Varnish author criticizing HTTP/2.0 proposals
The key difference with IPv6 is that SPDY is opaque to routers and only needs changes at the endpoints. IPv6 has the chicken-and-egg problem that it only becomes usable once everyone (hosters, ISPs, core networks, home networks, web frameworks, client devices) has deployed it, and most of those actors don't bother with things that bring no immediate benefit.
obtu··on Varnish author criticizing HTTP/2.0 proposals
It may be counter-intuitive, but with the right cyphers, the crypto costs of SSL and SPDY are negligible.
obtu··on Dan Bull: Censored By Copyright For Protesting Being Censored By Copyright
Done. And it was Universal not Viacom, sorry about that.
obtu··on Dan Bull: Censored By Copyright For Protesting Being Censored By Copyright
A useful reminder. Universal already did this by removing from YouTube Kim Dotcom's above-board rap video promoting MegaUpload. At first they made a false claim of plagiarism[1], but it turns out they feel the tools they built for copyright takedowns can be used for arbitrary censorship[2].
