I'm a solo developer. My main income comes from ezInvoice.com so most of my work is keeping it up to date.

Aside from that my wife and I have a small 5 acre "farmette" in the Ozark Mountains in SW Missouri that we putter around on. We have two mini-burros, 3 dogs, 5 cats, around 30 chickens, thousands of acres of National forest and public land surrounding us, and a lot of wild critters that come visit us.

I have the basement to myself to design and build apps and tinker with things that peak my interest.

oblib··on Cannabis use linked to anxiety diagnoses, worsened anxiety disorders
I have 2nd this. I've been using weed for a very long time and have seen so many people try to take a lung full of smoke as opposed to a small sip.

I don't do "vapes". That stuff is so highly concentrated that it makes me cough with even a tiny sip. Same with "gummies". I can't really know how the dose will affect me and I don't want to get "stoned".

I do think that if you're wanting weed to help with anxiety you should probably look into CBD too. That probably works better for anxiety.

oblib··on Cannabis use linked to anxiety diagnoses, worsened anxiety disorders
I'll chime in because I've been using cannabis for over 50 years. First off, I've never suffered with anxiety. if anything, THC has been a great help in relieving that for me.

I also say that over those years there have been long spells of time when I couldn't get any weed, and again, never had issues with that either. No "withdrawal" issues or anxiety issues at all.

The only weed induced anxiety I've ever experienced was caused by knowing I could get arrested for possession, but that's never happened, and where I live now it's legal, so I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Personally, I think that the social stigma associated with "refer madness" may be related to weed induce anxiety.

But there are studies that indicate THC does affect people differently and that genetics may have something to do with that. For example, those who suffer with psychoses may have issues with weed triggering psychotic episodes, but I recently read that CBD may reduce those events.

I think it would be interesting to hear from those dealing with anxiety if CBD relieves that.

oblib··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
I sure feel this. I've worked at home for the past 30 years and I've asked and pleaded with my wife and children (all adults now) to let me work uninterrupted and they've ignored that the entire time.

I've tried to explain to them why I need to work without interruptions, much the same as the author of this has described, but they've never given it a thought.

I cringe every time the phone rings because generally the 1st thing they ask is "are you busy" and I always answer "yes, I'm working" and they blow right by that to tell me why I need to do something for them right away.

Gotta love `em.

oblib··on My daily driver is older than I thought; it's positively vintage
I'm still using a Late 2014 Mac mini running Monterey. I use BBEdit and web browsers more than anything so other than the startup time it's not really much slower to use than a current Mac mini.

I still want one though.

oblib··on My daily driver is older than I thought; it's positively vintage
That is so cool to hear!

I had one of those `63 Darts with a straight 6 in it back in the 80s. It was a blue four door. I put snow tires in the back and drove that car all over the dirt roads in the Tehachapi Mountains north of Los Angeles.

One day I drove to the very end of a dirt road way up near the top of a mountain there and was just sitting there soaking in the view when I heard two big 4Wheeler Pickups rumbling up the road and when they came around the bend in the road where it ended and saw me in that old Dart sitting there it just crushed their egos.

That is truly a great car!

oblib··on Apple built iCloud to store billions of databases
CouchDB implements a DB per user approach. Personally, I've found it much easier to use than an SQL DB for web apps I've made, but I've heard others who've always used SQL say they were frustrated with it.
oblib··on NASA unveils quiet supersonic aircraft in effort to revive commercial flights
I just saw the AP video about this on youtube. They said it will go 900 mph without generating a loud sonic boom. That's amazing.
oblib··on Bare Bones Software – BBEdit 15 is here
I think they have a fully featured demo you can download. BBEdit is a great tool set to have.
oblib··on Bare Bones Software – BBEdit 15 is here
I'm going upgrade just to support them. They have always been great at taking care of me over the years and, who knows? I might end up using some those new features.
oblib··on Google lays off Bay Area workers, closes Mtn View child care center
I quit my job not long after becoming a single parent when my daughter was 10 months old.

That was back in the mid 1980s. The years I spent with my daughter were amazing. I learned how to be a "mom", and it was a very enlightening experience. It changed me. She became the most important thing in my life.

I was living in Los Angeles and realized I did not want to raise my daughter there so I started researching places I would want to raise her. I left LA just a couple years later.

Fair to say I've lived a lower middle class life financially, but also fair to say a much better quality of life than most living in LA, and that includes Beverley Hills and Malibu.

These are trade offs we all have to consider, but I do not regret getting out of the "Big City". I'd have probably spent 3 of the past 30 years sitting in gridlock traffic. It's worth doing the math on that.

oblib··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a test suite?
As a solo developer I will say that testing is pita because, at least for me, it's difficult to expose the ways users will interact with the UI and I tend to use it the same way over and over.

I've never worked with a team so I really can't say if they experience the same thing. I suppose they should uncover bugs better than I alone but users would still find some.

It took me a pretty long time to suss out all the ways users found to break the app after adding new features so I have to think teams could benefit from a service like this.

Hopefully others will chime in here for you.

oblib··on The Intersection of Science and Religion with Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Yeah, but to be fair to all those guys they're trying to reach an audience that would almost never spend any time on the subjects they cover if they went too deep into it.

In the description he says "we break down how to foster a love of science in a young person."

Neil is especially good at injecting humor when he delves into complex subjects, and great at debunking bunk without humiliating his audience.

He'd have to be fun to hang out with. I'd love to burn a fatty with Neil and listen to him ramble on about whatever he's excited about.

oblib··on Ask HN: What technologies are you using for new projects?
I use CouchD, PouchDB, jQuery & Bootstrap. That works good for offline and local first apps.
oblib··on GM buys out nearly half of Buick dealers in the US who opt to not sell EVs
I doubt that's going to work very well. I would never buy a car without test driving it first.

I have to admit that nowadays folks might do that, so I could be wrong. But my guess is that closing dealerships is going to fall flat. Those car companies still have to deal with recalls and warranty issues and asking someone to drive 50+ miles to get those issues fixed will become a huge pita.

oblib··on The surprising genius of sewing machines [video]
Years ago I bought an old Singer sewing machine on Ebay. Those are still an amazing, heavy duty, machine. You can stitch thick belt leather with those.

oblib··on GM buys out nearly half of Buick dealers in the US who opt to not sell EVs
The corporate spin on this being a positive is hollow. Buick dealerships disappearing may be good for those remaining dealerships in the short run, but not for the Buick brand. They won't sell more cars with less dealerships.

I took a look at both the Buick and Chevy lineup of SUVs and Crossovers and I wouldn't know one from the other if I saw one on the street. Same goes for most any brand right now.

oblib··on Colorado Supreme Court disqualifies Trump from holding office
I reviewed the guidelines here again before posting this and it meets them. This is really a huge, and rare, and thus historic event for the U.S. and State governance.

If I recall correctly there are several other States that have been pondering keeping Trump off their ballots as well. All those States have had laws that cover this for a very long time, but as far as I know none have ever exercised them to keep a Presidential candidate off their ballots.

oblib··on Colorado Supreme Court disqualifies Trump from holding office
I know politics is on the list of things not to post, but I think this qualifies for the exceptions to that.
oblib··on OpenAI suspends ByteDance's account after it used GPT to train its own AI model
"OpenAI suspends ByteDance's account after it used GPT to train its own AI model"

That's truly hilarious... It's akin to a child who stole a candy bar in a candy store complaining about their sister stealing that same candy bar from them.

oblib··on The AI Trust Crisis
Personally, I think "AI" should be required to disclose the origins of the data it bases it's responses on, and if any of those are copyrighted.
oblib··on Mildred Weather
This is a very simple hack that grabs weather data from the weather.gov and noaa.gov websites

I made it so I could grab exactly what I wanted and focused on where I live. It's not pretty, but it's fast and informative.

I used jQuery and Bootstrap but all the JS code to view the options and fetch the data are in the html page so it's pretty easy to configure it for any part of the US.

oblib··on You Should Be Concerned About the Bill to Remove Section 230 Protections from AI
"And, under this law, doing so would open up OpenAI to liability, even though all it was doing was following the instructions of the users."

That old "They told me to do it" excuse never worked for my mom.

That's a perfect oxymoron.

oblib··on Want Less Traffic and More Parking? Start Charging for It
That only works if the "usable public transit" is in place. And we also have to consider that a large portion of the poor do have a reliable vehicle. I have personally kept a lot of those running for friends and family and the idea of only the wealthy being able to afford a parking space they too subsidize with taxes they pay feels pretty wrong to me.
oblib··on Painting is Terribly Difficult
Wow! That's a great project and it's very cool to see all those other murals. You can really see that same style of art in a lot of them. They have a very sturdy feel to them.
oblib··on Painting is Terribly Difficult
It disappeared.
oblib··on Painting is Terribly Difficult
crq-yml, I think I accidentally down voted your comment. I apologize for that. There doesn't seem to be a way for me to undo that.
oblib··on Painting is Terribly Difficult
I think those pointing out the tech missed your point. It's fair to say that making paint is a technology but "painting" is an art and the two are very distinct.

An artist can create art with most anything, dirt and sand for example.

My wife has been painting lately. She has two sisters that paint as well and they're all remarkably good at it. So was her mother, and her mother's uncle was as well. He did a mural in the Ames, Iowa Post Office that was a WPA funded project that's pretty cool. Makes me wonder if there is a genetic connection :D
