oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on How will 'chipageddon' affect you?
Current 2020 automotive microcontrollers are nowhere near 7nm. 65nm and 40nm is where it's at right now.
oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on Ask HN: How did you get started in tech and/or Linux?
Got my first PC in ~2001 Mainly used for playing games.

First contact to programming was through the computer course at school.

Decided that I want to pursue a degree in computer science and studied the same at university.

After getting the bachelors degree I applied for jobs and am happily employed now since 5 years.

So all in all the most boring 'foot in the door' story you could imagine.

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on How to Write Unmaintainable Code (2003)
4. Split up the codebase into modules. You yourself cannot change these modules. Only the ‚module experts‘ are allowed to change their own modules. Your final executable will consist of ~200 such modules.

If you find bugs / problems you will need to convince the module owners that is in fact a bug in their module.

And modules are delivered only every 4/5 months..

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on The Cost of Free Doughnuts: 70 Years of Regret
Different product at my dayjob came to mind.

The license costs ~18.000€ per year. Luckily it‘s a free floating license that can be reserved by the user. So it can be fully utilised and a wider pool of users sees the benefit and the great value add of the product.

Per user licensing with that pricetag would not have gotten managerial consent

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
I am in favour of this. If a site is doing the work of providing content (news, sport game scores, weather, ...) and Google passes by, scrapes the most important information and shows it on their own site, a large swath of users will never visit the content provider.

The one providing the content has rights to his content.

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on 'My son spent £3,160 in one game'
Why would you ever use a credit card over a debit card???

With debit you spend the money you own.

With credit you take debt. On every single payment. You are taking debt. Only at the end of the month you pay your debt.

If you spent too much, (by accident) you now have to pay overdraft interest.

With debit you spend the actual money you own.

If a purchase (fraudulent or not) exceeds your current balance, the payment won’t process.

But that is a good thing.

You shouldn’t be buying things you don’t have the money for anyway...

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on The little legacy code that could: a fable of software ownership
I am relatively new to a project that is being sold and used in the order of millions for approximately 25 to thirty years.

It was refreshing to find out that one of the approximately 7 languages that contribute to the final executable that was abandoned in ~2007 has been revived and is now (2016ish) being maintained by Eclipse

These kind of things make you realise that the Silicon Valley way of doing things is not the silver bullet.

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on A Teenager's IoT worm is bricking thousands of devices
To you as a domain expert, yes. A typical user just tosses the device into the trashcan. For him it’s effectively bricked.
oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on Ask HN: Do You Code at Home?
No. I devoted 5 years to study computer science. I won’t program if it’s not getting paid for. Separation of work and private life is important for me.
oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on Ask HN: Why don't most self taught developers start with Computer Science?
There are two sides to this topic. Without strong theoretical roots and familiarity with sorting/pathfinding algorithms, you are unlikely to spot the situation where off the shelf solutions are not sufficient. You yourself and your employer might not feel like you are the right person to implement or adapt these low level algorithms. (Chicken and egg problem)

Rest assured that there are projects and occasions where doing this type of work is necessary

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on AirPods with Wireless Charging Case
Not having a cable dangling on your body.

Not needing to have your phone on your body constantly.

Source: Wife owns AirPods and I use them from time to time. For me these two points are HUGE plus points. But I won’t buy them as i find them too expensive and don’t listen to audio often enough (wired or wireless) on my phone anyway.

oaw-bct-ar-bamf··on Ask HN: What are the drawbacks of releasing my language under GPLv3+link exc?
Spending time to read the license + exceptions

More importantly: Trying to convince upper management that this license will be ok to use.

If you think YouTube comments are bad, I recommend you to visit the Twitch (Gaming) stream chats.

It will change your perception of 'horrible comments'
