oangemangut··on Tesla remotely converts battery pack, cutting 1/3 of range
It's not just the ETAs that are pushing me away, but just the entire dealership process generally is annoying. I wanted to order a vehicle from GM and I have tried close at least 10 dealerships at this point in the PNW. No one is straight up on the process of either getting an order in or what pricing will look like or when they might get an allocation. Some just say "sure, you're on the list" but who knows what that even means. One dealership (Bellingham, WA) wanted 25K deposit to even take an order.

I basically gave up on that vehicle not because I can't wait or am not willing to play the price, but the BS process of going through one of these dealerships is too infuriating. Rivian I put my order in and at least I have an order date and understand that I'm in the queue and should be sometime MY24. If Cadillac came out with the exact same process as Rivian and it said I could get my vehicle ordered and enqueued for 12month deliver I would do it.

oangemangut··on The 15-minute city (2020)
People do wonder whether low-density, un-walkable, cites are _bad_ for human health, and studies show that they typically are bad health. I recall some studies on urban form and it's relationship to life expectancy, crime, happiness at certain socioeconomic statuses. Poor people in much of Montreal are able to live in walkable cities with low housing cost and decent transit, and it turns out they live longer, are more economically mobile, and are happier than equivalent SES populations in large cities with car-centric design.
oangemangut··on Where is there more livestock than people?
72B of those 80 are chickens, cattle come in at 325M. At least chickens are a superfood animal in terms of converting calories into food, and generally being lower impact than cattle, pork, etc.
oangemangut··on Maccy is an open source lightweight and searchable clipboard manager for macOS
as a user of Maccy, yes anything you put on the clipboard will be an entry in plain text. Maybe there is a way to do a 'secure' copy with Maccy but I'm not using it so I can view my passwords via the buffer.

edits: I guess this is only the case when you copy the plain-text. Seems there are event types associated with the copied target that Maccy will ignore if it believes it is a 'confidential type' Check the GitHub README

oangemangut··on I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months
usually the signing bonus they offer for years 1 and 2 makes up for the backloaded RSU schedule... at least that's mostly how my offer worked circa 2019
oangemangut··on A Hybrid Approach to Work
In France this didn't really work, in corporate jobs anyways, people would just work their old hours anyway, which they then take off as 'vacation days' - typically in the vacation periods where there's downtime anyways. Doesn't seem like it's worked to help increase total employment.
oangemangut··on Ask HN: How Does a Canadian SWE/Data Scientist Make a Move to the US?
In bay we paid roughly 60K USD for an infant and a toddler, and had them in different daycares for a while due to waitlists.

In Vancouver it would have been in the 40s, CAD.

oangemangut··on Ask HN: How Does a Canadian SWE/Data Scientist Make a Move to the US?
Yeah, I guess we're getting a bit off track, but go into a US grocery store in one of your target markets and the prices will not look different unless you convert, and then you'll see they are more expensive.

Daycare in the big tech centers, in areas with good schools, costs MORE than Vancouver/Toronto/Montreal before converting. Since we've be here for a family our experiences with healthcare haven't been that different than Canada (normal checkups, 1 delivery in Canada 1 delivery in US), except that we've paid 5-10K per year in out of pocket + another 5K in premiums per year.

Finally - if you go gown on TN, if you have a partner that's coming with you they can't work. And it's a long and annoying slog going from TN -> H1B -> GC. Just food for thought.

Anyways, when you're talking about tier 2/3 companies (especially non-tech) you're not making 300USD+ in US either, especially in secondary markets.

As someone who moved to Bay area to 'tier 2'company, initially as in SWE but now in MLE, the big benefits are the depth of the job market: it's not hard to find a high(ish) TC gig around here, and you can easily shift to another US tech center (which doesn't seem to happen as much in Canada) and the increased savings rate of converted CAD dollars we'll use in Victoria when we return.

oangemangut··on Ask HN: How Does a Canadian SWE/Data Scientist Make a Move to the US?
if getting to 2-3x pay by converting the USD->CAD then you have to convert the COL into CAD and it's much lower in Canada than the US. If you don't convert either then it's maybe just slightly cheaper in US, though in the markets where 2x non-converted comp exists, the COL is still probably higher.
