oaktowner··on Forbes Site, After Begging You Turn Off Adblocker, Serves Up Malware 'Ads'
I just looked at http://officesnapshots.com/ and I agree -- that's what advertising should be. Congrats.

Two questions: how much time do you spend selling/negotiating with advertisers? And you say you could earn more from a network: have you researched at all exactly how much more?

Naively, it seems that maybe advertisers would pay you more because 100% of the visitors to your site are relevant to their products (but admittedly I'm out of my realm of expertise).

oaktowner··on Cleartext: A text editor that only allows the 1,000 most common words in English
I had forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder!
oaktowner··on Google Shutting Down Wallet Card
Chase gives me this for my Visa card (I can set an 'alert' level). I buy nearly everything with that card (and use it to pay most of my other bills as well).
oaktowner··on Google opens access to its speech recognition API
I don't think there's any requirement that you use Google Compute Engine in order to use this API. Yes, you sign up for an account, but of course you have to sign up for an account to use it. This API is part of the platform.

Similarly, you can use the Google Translate API without using Compute Engine, App Engine, etc.

Note: I work for Google (but not on any of these products).

oaktowner··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Amazon? Here is how much I make at Amazon
I meant a spreadsheet about Amazon salaries in Google Docs...otherwise someone has to comb through this thread to pull out the data. And it allows people to build and share pretty charts.

(as mentioned above, this has already happened at Google)

oaktowner··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Amazon? Here is how much I make at Amazon
If you really want to do this, start a Google spreadsheet.
oaktowner··on Amazon Echo, home alone with NPR on, got confused and hijacked a thermostat
My Moto X let me set the keyword to whatever I wanted it to be: I used "OK, Computer."
oaktowner··on The 1980s Media Panic Over Dungeons and Dragons
I remember my parents showing us a video about "satanic" music. Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Rush, Styx, the Eagles...you name a late 70's band, they were in there. Some of the bands actively courted that image, of course, but the whole thing was pretty patently ridiculous.

Their lyrics, their iconography, their album illustrations were all trotted out as 'proof' that the bands had sold their souls to the devil and were trying to recruit us to the dark side.

oaktowner··on Amazon Echo Dot
Their business model depends on some percentage of their customers using the subscription service.

My guess is: if they offered the version you describe, they'd need to make it much more expensive. Which many consumers would find odd: the one with fewer features would cost much more. Granted, those consumers wouldn't be looking at the big picture...but I find many consumers don't. Up front costs matter a lot to consumers.

oaktowner··on Spotify moves its back end to Google Cloud
Check out Deployment Manager...I think it has what you're looking for.

(I work at Google but not on Deployment Manager)

oaktowner··on Spotify moves its back end to Google Cloud
App Engine requests time out after 60 seconds (that's 60000 ms).

https://cloud.google.com/appengine/articles/deadlineexceeded...

(I work at Google, but not on App Engine)

oaktowner··on Three and a half degrees of separation
That last comment was hysterical. You can come to my party.
oaktowner··on Mixed reality outfit Magic Leap nets $793.5M
Well, to be fair, they are typically talking to someone who is halfway across a galaxy.

Apple only has to get that signal partway around one measly little planet. ;-)

oaktowner··on Pursuit of Serverless Architecture: What if we didn't need app servers anymore?
I think what he's getting at is that he gets backend functionality without ever deploying and managing instances himself (similar to what App Engine offers).

You just deploy your code, and Amazon automagically handles scaling, etc.

oaktowner··on The 99% (of startups)
What's interesting is that they had already raised $42M at that point (according to comments here).

Certainly raising $42M and having an over-$100M valuation already put them in the top 1%, right?

oaktowner··on Macbook charger teardown: surprising complexity inside Apple's power adapter
Great idea. Would be far cheaper to replace that than the whole charger. (Though that's probably exactly why Apple won't do it).
oaktowner··on Macbook charger teardown: surprising complexity inside Apple's power adapter
I couldn't disagree more. Chargers should be durable enough to handle typical usage.

People aren't "FAR too rough and careless." People behave as people behave.

A high end manufacturer like Apple should be design and manufacture their devices to stand up to the rigors that people typically put them through.

Why doesn't Apple? Because their user base (or at least the majority of their user base who winds chargers too tightly, which I apparently fall into) would rather buy a new charger every year or so than switch computers.

It's quite profitable for them.

[Edit -- fixed typo]

oaktowner··on Doctors want ban on prescription drug, device advertisements
I will never stop being impressed at the breadth and depth of the HN audience. Thanks, you two, for your comments.
oaktowner··on How I Quit My Job and Built My First App
The diversification was really important.

Too many people think of "app" as "business;" he saw early on that he would need lots of apps (both his and others') to build a business.

oaktowner··on Twitter Sees 6% Increase in “Like” Activity After First Week of Hearts
Yes, that sounds like hyperbole.

People do want to bookmark tweets. But Twitter reasoned (probably correctly) that people "like" a lot more tweets than they bookmark. Naturally, Twitter likes the idea of visible engagement, so they are encouraging people to do the lighterweight thing.

What's interesting is that I had already found my own behavior changing. For years I used 'favoriting' as bookmarking...but in the last year or so, I've changed and was already using it as a show of appreciation. I wonder if many other people were doing the same thing already.

oaktowner··on Ask HN: Why isn't all stock trading done by algorithm?
Most stock brokerages spend lots of times gathering data from the companies themselves -- the management group, the customers, industry analysts, etc. They are not making investment (BUY/HOLD/SELL) recommendations based on the past fluctuations of the market, rather on their "expert" appraisal of the company's worth versus its current stock price.
oaktowner··on Why Do Big Irons Still Exist?
I can remember going to the computer lab at Berkeley (would have been '89 or '90 probably) and seeing SPARC stations for the first time. Sexiest things ever. Huge monitors (at least they seemed huge back then), and those three button mice...with no trackball!
oaktowner··on Google engineer writing Amazon reviews on USB-C cables that don't work
Who would do the testing?
oaktowner··on Copy-Pasting URLs from Google Search Can Leak Previous Searches

oaktowner··on Introducing the Plex Media Player
iTunes proved that.

People were stealing music prior to its release not because they were thieves at heart but because it was the only way most of them could find most of the music they wanted.

iTunes put the entire music industry to shame by simply showing that if, instead of fearing downloading, they had given a good, legal venue to sell music, people would in fact be willing to pay.

oaktowner··on Chromoscope: The milky way at different wavelengths
Repeating solaris999's comment above: The "What am I looking at?" section (http://www.chromoscope.net/1.4.1/what.html) says that they are: "Don't worry, they aren't holes in the Universe being ripped open by creatures from another dimension! They are actually just gaps in the survey."
oaktowner··on The microservices cargo cult
You're giving me flashbacks.

But the parallels are eerie. Someone gives a nomenclature to a style of architecture that many people were already using (just last week I heard that Netflix "invented" microservices), and suddenly the attention of the industry pivots. Technologies will be invented to ease adoption (yay!), but people will forget that this architectural style is one part of a solution for a particular type of problem -- it is not a solution for every problem, nor does adopting it mean all of your other problems will go away.

But consultancies will rise, debates will rage and conflicts over what truly constitutes a microservice will ensue.

oaktowner··on Nap desks
We have these[1] at work.

Close the hatch and you block out the light and I assume feel some sense of privacy, but there's certainly no hiding a second person in there with you.

oaktowner··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
This.

I'd gladly pay for a Prime product that was $10/mo cheaper and didn't include streaming. I never use Prime Video Streaming (precisely because Amazon won't enable streaming to Chromecast).

oaktowner··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
Not at all. There is nothing other than their own stubbornness that prevents Amazon from supporting streaming on the Chromecast. Google doesn't charge for it streaming, there is no "marketplace" from which to take 30%, etc.

They are open APIs that HBO, ESPN, Netflix and hundreds of other companies have integrated with...and Amazon hasn't.
