oakpond··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
Me too. This looks to me like a holiday PR stunt. Get everybody to talk about AI during the Christmas parties.
oakpond··on Syncthing Android App Discontinued
Seems to work. Exported the config of the other one and imported it in this one. Seems all the settings are there. Sync seems to work too. Kudos to the devs.
oakpond··on Llama-3.2-3B-Instruct-uncensored
What a user-friendly interface.
oakpond··on Guile 3.0.10 now ships with support for parens-optional syntax (wisp)
Surprised to see so much hostility towards Wisp. I find it very clean and elegant. It won't cover every situation (sometimes it's just cleaner with parens), but it allows you to fall back to parens when needed! It's just really well thought out imho. I've used Wisp in a moderately large project and wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I had the chance.
oakpond··on AMD Ryzen 9000 Series processors are ready to deliver world class gaming
Cool, didn't know about TestMem5 until now. Thanks!
oakpond··on AMD Ryzen 9000 Series processors are ready to deliver world class gaming
Sounds good. I didn't mean to make a suggestion personally to you by the way. Sorry if it seemed that way. English is not my native language. My remark was more targeted towards the reader of the thread who gets curious and may start experimenting.

May I suggest to also run memtest if you're gonna tune these kind of things. Your computer may appear to work normally after changing the settings, but memtest can reveal unnoticeable memory errors.
oakpond··on Leaked admin access token to Python, PyPI, and PSF GitHub repos
Yikes, TIL: never build production artifacts from a development checkout?
oakpond··on Markdown: An effective tool for LLM interaction
A similar tool for llama.cpp: https://tildegit.org/unworriedsafari/mill.py
oakpond··on Microsoft Recall should make you consider Linux
Evidently they still need to experiment. They don't know if it's junk until they try to use it. I'm convinced they are going to try as much data as they can simply because they need to compete in the market.
oakpond··on Microsoft Recall should make you consider Linux
A problem with AI I don't hear anybody really talking about is how it is creating a massive incentive to start gathering more and more personal information. More and more training data will be needed to make better and better AI products.
oakpond··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
Honestly AI speech recognition still sucks so bad I'm basically convinced it will fall on its face in many daily use cases.

I realize this is slightly tangential, but please don't replace customer support with chatbots or whatever you want to call them. It's a freaking horrible experience.

oakpond··on [dead]
Sounds worse than pagerank
oakpond··on The project to migrate Android to Bazel is cancelled
It would be interesting to read what's hard about migrating Android to Bazel.
oakpond··on Ask HN: Recommended FLOSS Themed Podcasts?
Looks good, thanks!
oakpond··on Stop your car from spying on you
Any guides on how to prevent each car brand/model from spying on you?
oakpond··on Car is spying on you, leading to higher insurance rates
I propose focusing on the worst part: information collection on a massive scale. Even if it is not used right now by a spy. They can use what is collected at this moment against you at any point in the future.
oakpond··on We need to talk about parentheses (2020)
Maybe the outcome of this syntax experiment is that less is not always more. Maybe in general people prefer more syntactical notations than what Lisps offer out of the box.
oakpond··on Yann LeCun: Human-level artificial intelligence is going to take a long time
C++ has enough expressive power to make you wish it had less.
oakpond··on Tell HN: Bash.org is no more
No! Bring it back now!!

En garde! If you're a Vim user, fzf.vim [1] can do this. :)

oakpond··on Programming as a career isn't right for me
I fear AI in that context will be just another computer program that is used to make cost-saving decisions while avoiding accountability.

For example, no promotion again this year? Too bad, your boss's AI tool decided you didn't deserve it, and since your boss is now directly responsible for 1000 people you can't even meet with them to talk about it.

oakpond··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
Look at the number of tweets from Altman, Brockman and Nadella. I also think they are bluffing. They have launched a media campaign in order to (re)gain control of OpenAI.
oakpond··on Literate Documentation with Emacs and Org Mode
Literate programming is an interesting approach. I wonder if it is really helpful for building large systems though.

In my opinion, trying to understand a large codebase is a learning activity. True, documentation is important at times. However, it depends also on the author. If writing good code is hard, writing good literate programs is imho harder. Now one needs to be a good writer and a good coder. Probably the skills are transferable to an extent, but I think they are different things in the end.

Besides that, the ability to explore and try things out is also helpful for learning things. That's why I think Smalltalk is the most approachable language so far. You get a browser and a REPL (workspace), and the object explorer plus inspector tools. Not to mention the method finder. All these tools to let you learn how code works. I really miss having some of these tools in other languages, especially the browser. Even Lisp doesn't have that one afaik (correct me if I'm wrong).

In the end, I believe language facilities such as the ones I previously mentioned are more valuable to understanding than being able to wrap code in prose. Still, documentation is invaluable at times. So comments will (should) never go away.

oakpond··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
I love tech in general but it's a bit disappointing to discover that perhaps its primary role in modern society is enabling mass surveillance.

oakpond··on Midjourney CEO Silencing Satire About Xi Jinping
> It’s not just Midjourney’s China-based users that can’t satirize Xi Jinping — that rule applies to users everywhere, even in the United States.

I'm speechless and a bit scared...

What about backups? They only keep backups for 30 days? They don't backup this data? Is the legal concept of data retention the same as the legal concept of data storage?
