nyanpasu64··on Microsoft didn't sandbox Windows Defender, so I did (2017)
I've gotten it to work on Windows 10 by booting into live Linux and renaming the Windows Defender folder in Program Files. No clue if it would work on 11.
nyanpasu64··on Doom in the iPhone Photos App (Barely)
I recall many years ago I was able to extend a video by multiple minutes of a black screen, by extracting the timestamps (PTS?) of frames to a text file, then increasing the timestamp of the final frame (or end of video?) by a very large number. Sadly I'm unable to find the files or program I used to do it.

nyanpasu64··on The Byte Order Fallacy
memcpy is only defined for non-overlapping memory regions (otherwise you should use memmove), but many platforms use memmove for memcpy anyway to avoid breaking user programs in unpredictable ways. Apparently this has also led to some arguments and glibc version incompatibilities (https://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/linux/misc/gcc-semibug.html).
nyanpasu64··on Have you ever seen soldering this close? [video]
I've heard of head-in-pillow defects where the solder may touch but fails to wet the pad on the chip or board. BGA probably makes it almost impossible to nudge a leg to check for mechanically solid connections. I don't know if bad joints from the factory are a problem in practice, or they usually only crack in use.

> Also, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t mention all the red flags this has set off with everyone who’s ever manufactured products before; I’ve been creating and launching products for almost two decades now (at both much higher and lower quantities than this) and the information provided to us about this project over the last two months doesn’t line up with any manufacturing experience I’ve ever had.

What does this mean?

nyanpasu64··on Linux's Bedtime Routine
The funny thing is that Linux does have an alternative ioctl-based suspend interface (https://docs.kernel.org/power/userland-swsusp.html)... with an incompatible API and different purpose from the string-based one...
nyanpasu64··on Linux's Bedtime Routine
I've done some digging in Linux power management a while ago, while debugging a (not-fully-fixed) Linux AMDGPU dGPU crash on low memory (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2362). Along the way, I discovered that you can hibernate both through /sys/power/disk, and the userland snapshot/hibernate/suspend interface (https://docs.kernel.org/power/userland-swsusp.html, snapshot_ioctl()). IIRC these two mechanisms go along quite different codepaths internally.

The specific crash bug I encountered was because Linux calls pm_restrict_gfp_mask() to prevent swapping to disk, before dpm_prepare() (the first opportunity for a GPU driver to backup VRAM to system RAM before the PCIe GPU is shut down and VRAM is lost). So if you don't have enough free system RAM to hold all VRAM, the sleep is aborted midway through (waking the system) or produces a failed memory allocation later during sleep or resume (often resulting in undefined system state, halted network or USB controllers, or worst yet a halted NVMe controller resulting in the system running around like a headless chicken unable to load data from disk or even log data to the journal). I'm wondering if this was a deliberate decision or an unforeseen interaction between suspend-time GFP masks and GPU drivers.

It seems Nvidia can't reliably backup VRAM either without being informed by systemd prior to the kernel initiating suspend (https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/560.35.03/R...).

nyanpasu64··on LSP: The good, the bad, and the ugly
Not a LSP developer, but spitballing that perhaps you could address causality by tagging document updates/versions with numbers and messages/replies include the version of the document they correspond to.
nyanpasu64··on He emptied an entire crypto exchange onto a thumb drive
I found that many exchanges/custodial wallets (I've tested Kraken and CashApp) charge fees or imbalanced exchange rates for converting fiat into crypto and sending crypto to another address (often using a bulk transaction exchanging money between the exchange's wallet), so I wouldn't say you avoid transaction fees that way (they may or may not be reduced). I ended up using them anyway because it's easier to purchase crypto as a number on an exchange than to have it sent to your personal address.
nyanpasu64··on Diffusion Is Spectral Autoregression
(not the author) There's techniques for consistent-phase audio synthesis like phase vocoders, but they are beyond my current knowledge.
nyanpasu64··on Diffusion Is Spectral Autoregression
> I won’t speculate about why images exhibit this behaviour and sound seemingly doesn’t, but it is certainly interesting (feel free to speculate away in the comments!).

Images have a large near-DC component (solid colors) and useful time-domain properties, while human hearing starts at ~20 Hz and the frequencies needed to understand speech range from 300-4 kHz (spitballing based on the bandwidth of analog phones).

What would happen if you built a diffusion model using pink noise to corrupt all coefficients simultaneously? Alternatively what if you used something other than noise (like a direct blur) for the model to reverse?

nyanpasu64··on Extreme Pi Boot Optimization
I was thinking that Circle (https://github.com/rsta2/circle) might be faster to boot than a kernel, but it doesn't seem to support MIPI cameras.
nyanpasu64··on The web's clipboard, and how it stores data of different types
My problem with rich-text paste is that it transfers unwanted presentational formatting, resulting in mismatched fonts, sizes, and typography. I generally either want plain-text paste or preserving semantic elements (like bold/italic emphasis, links, and bullets).

More generally, when editing a document I want to be able to view both formatted text and "escaped" contents (like "view source"), and when copy-pasting or saving text, I want to be able to convert formatted text into "escaped" text to diff, and also paste text without misinterpreting asterisks and angle brackets as formatting information (until I explicitly copy text as source and paste as formatted).

nyanpasu64··on Air Con: $1697 for an on/off switch
Android doesn't surface app signatures beyond requiring that updates share the same signature while the original is installed. I thought a potential app could exfiltrate data, voice, do crypto mining, act as an unauthorized VPN exit node for commercial VPNs or cyberattacks, etc.
nyanpasu64··on Air Con: $1697 for an on/off switch
> The original ezone tablet had been running Android 6.0, this Samsung was still on 5.0 but I didnt think that would cause any issues so I got started on doing what was clearly missing: The required apps. All ezone apps are available both on the Advantage Air website and the apkpure site. I only learned of the apkpure site from a post claiming he had been directed to it by a AA tech support person.

Redirecting your customers to a third-party/pirate APK redistributor of unknown authenticity... reality defies parody.

How do you gather profiling information for kernel function calls from a user program?
nyanpasu64··on iPhone 16 could let you shoot in JPEG-XL
I want a return to an enforced norm of different extensions for lossy and lossless files. With the adoption of WebP, I've repeatedly encountered shady CDNs substituting in lossy .webp files in place of lossless .png files, in a way you can't tell by the filetype alone when saving a file (whereas you could tell when saving a .png URL but get a .jpg file instead). I fear the same will happen with .jxl files.

Could you disable Bluetooth and buy an external Bluetooth receiver that outputs analog audio?
nyanpasu64··on We don't know how bad most things are nor precisely how they're bad
I heard that pianos have stretched harmonic series due to string tension/weight/something, so piano tuners actually have to tune upper notes higher and lower notes lower, while ensuring various harmonics interact well. There's quite a bit of art to it rather than pure numeric ratios (which may or may not be possible to encapsulate in ML).
nyanpasu64··on Cursor Has Raised $60M
Back in the free Copilot beta, I disabled automatic completions because they were like intrusive thoughts. Even then, with on-demand completion I felt my code-writing skills withering away as I'd instead ask Copilot to generate blocks of code I didn't have to think through myself.

Stock Firefox also allows setting Amazon and eBay as a default search engine, and I wonder if this is related to Amazon being a sponsored shortcut on the new tab page.
nyanpasu64··on Netboot.xyz: your favorite operating systems in one place
How do I preload or cache ISOs on a flash drive holding the netboot.xyz client? I haven't seen any mention of it in docs. I've seen some people talking about setting up local iPXE servers, but I don't know if my machines always have functional networking to my server laptop during startup (and this fails outside my home network).
nyanpasu64··on Netboot.xyz: your favorite operating systems in one place
I tried netboot once, and lost interest when it took minutes to download an ISO over cable internet (DSL would be even worse) every singe time I tried booting into a live distro while debugging things. It's faster to download the ISOs I need ahead of time, save them on a Ventoy drive, and boot (and reboot) into each one in seconds.
