nyanpasu64··on Using the Apple ][+ with the RetroTink-5X
As I understand the Apple II has three useful voltage levels being sync, black, and white, with color being generated by alternating black and white?

The CXADC sounds interesting but unfortunately drops raw samples upon seeing input sync pulses unless you greatly decrease signal amplitude (which may be fine given it's 1-bit). I wonder if inverting the composite signal would bypass this. Alternatively the Domesday Duplicator is more expensive and may not be intended for composite signals. TBH I wonder if an ARM microcontroller could PLL to the sync pulses, sample the active signal digitally, and output a HDMI signal for a capture card (transmitting to a PC via the Pi Pico's 12 Mbit/s USB is marginal).

While researching LumaCode (similarly based on extracting digital signals from retro hardware) I came across RGBtoHDMI and https://lukazi.blogspot.com/2022/02/apple-ii-video-to-hdmi-u.... I have not read the article but it may be useful.

nyanpasu64··on Scientific conferences are leaving the US amid border fears
I don't know what it will take to make the fascist regime fear for their safety, and their supporters fear for their existence in society for having elected an autocrat intent on eliminating the existence of vulnerable groups. And I don't see a path to restoring social freedoms in red states with Christian nationalist radical majorities passing laws declaring Jesus as king and banning websites with LGBTQ content from minors.

What's "wrong" with matching decompilation as an oracle for provably correct source code for a given binary?
nyanpasu64··on A lost decade chasing distributed architectures for data analytics?
I find that good multithreading can speed up parallelizable workloads by 5-10 times depending on CPU core count, if you don't have tight latency constraints (and even games with millisecond-level latency deadlines are multithreaded these days, though real-time code may look different than general code).
nyanpasu64··on The scientific “unit” we call the decibel
I have a vague report that "root-power" or voltage-like quantities (20 dB per order of magnitude) are signed or vector-like, while power-like quantities are unsigned scalars?

The BSL and its revenue cliffs isn't open-source but shared-source.
nyanpasu64··on The Tongue Is a Fire
Trump believes in free speech for the far-right and fascists, and deportation for students speaking against his actions.

What's the problem with 50M log entries and deletion, and a disk-based cache?
nyanpasu64··on Experts have it easy (2024)
I've read that birds used to have penises (and paleognaths and waterfowl still have them today), but the Galliformes (including chickens) developed atrophied penises which are difficult to see (hence chick sexing and feeding males to the meat grinder), and the Neoaves lost them entirely. Though https://prumlab.yale.edu/sites/default/files/brennan_etal_20... suggests the exact nature is more variable between birds in lineages that "have" them

> The GameCube design shows clear signs of engineers overcompensating for flaws in the N64 design

I haven't programmed for either console. Which features show this in what sense?

nyanpasu64··on Rustls Server-Side Performance
AIUI epoch GC doesn't require Arc's atomic increment/decrement operations which can be slower than naive loads (https://codeberg.org/nyanpasu64/cachebash), but at this point we're getting into nano-optimization territory.
nyanpasu64··on Rustls Server-Side Performance
I wonder if replacing the encryption key every 6 hours would be a good use case for a crossbeam-epoch, though this may be premature optimization, and that library requires writing unsafe code as far as I can tell.
nyanpasu64··on The first year of free-threaded Python
I'm more upset that Microsoft is charging money for using a code generation model trained on copyleft code.
nyanpasu64··on The first year of free-threaded Python
Microsoft "embraced" open-source ecosystems with an "open-source" editor, extended it with proprietary extensions DRMed to binary blobs hidden in VS Code binary builds, and used it to extinguish SSH, Python, C++, etc. development in open-source and derivative works of VS Code.
nyanpasu64··on How “The Great Gatsby” took over high school
I feel a lot of "literature" reading may reflect experiences a high school student (generously) may not relate to, or (less generously) may not have the life experiences to understand, and may not necessarily gain by reading?
nyanpasu64··on Can you trust that permission pop-up on macOS?
I don't even have a ~/Applications on macOS 15.4.1.
nyanpasu64··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
I found that this script broke Win+R Run dialog history by setting Start_TrackProgs. This was undocumented, and I had to disable it manually. (Worse yet, it doesn't show up on GitHub search because the .reg files are UTF-16.)
nyanpasu64··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
This is about the binaries. I first tried renaming the folder in Program Files, but Defender still kept eating RAM and CPU resources which were scarce on a 12-year-old laptop.
nyanpasu64··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
The most invasive but effective way I've found to disable Defender is to boot into a live Linux USB, rename "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender", and create an empty file in its place.
nyanpasu64··on Zed: High-performance AI Code Editor
This smells like a fractional DPI scaling issue.
nyanpasu64··on Zed: High-performance AI Code Editor
I think it's a combination of using a Zed theme with insufficiently high text contrast, missing subpixel font rendering in Zed, and possibly more gamma correction and less stem darkening than you're used to.
nyanpasu64··on Matt Godbolt sold me on Rust by showing me C++
The problem I've always had with unit type wrappers is you can't convert between a &[f32] and a &[Amplitude<f32>] like you can convert a single scalar value.

nyanpasu64··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
There's a... sad comparison of this article about over-responsibility, and https://www.benkuhn.net/blub/ about the value of learning about the stack you use (the more you know about the workings of bugs, sometimes the more they gnaw at you).
nyanpasu64··on Show HN: I built a synthesizer based on 3D physics
The sounds seem to mostly be modulated sines with limited timbral variety? I'm not sure how https://youtu.be/NYX_eeNVIEU?t=179 got harmonic series out of the building blocks.

Is it possible that fight wounds and surgical wounds have different properties, and surgery results in slower healing?

I'm confused. The page has a HTML5 doctype, and https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Reference/... says that UTF-8 is the only valid encoding for HTML5 documents, yet Firefox interprets the page as Windows-1252 or such until I "Repair Text Encoding". https://webhint.io/docs/user-guide/hints/hint-meta-charset-u... says you're supposed to include a <meta charset="utf-8"> or optionally Content-Type header.

nyanpasu64··on AI Horseless Carriages
That doesn't sound like ring modulation in a musical sense (IIRC it has a modulator above 30 Hz, or inverts the signal instead of attenuating?), so much as crackling, cutting in and out, or an overdone tremolo effect. I checked in Audacity and the signal only gets cut out, not inverted.
nyanpasu64··on Release: OLED Mode extension for Chrome
TBH I wonder what's going on with the hyper-generic username of "FreelanceProgrammingServices", profile picture, and the HN username of WindowsDev who has made three GitHub submissions of their own work and posted one comment.
