nutcracker46··on Pilots: FAA Didn't Wait Too Long to Ground Boeings 737-8 Max
What's this? More debate and argumentation that the Feds didn't wait excessively long before grounding the 737 Max 8? There is no way to prove such a thing. May as well play the lottery and hope not to win the jackpot, though some of the balls are weighted...
nutcracker46··on Chinese Girl Died in Plane Crash – What Has She Done to Deserve Online Malice
Rule one for a happy life and peaceful afterlife: stay off of Weibo, WeChat, Reddit, the Chans, and other social media. Where there is injury, trolls rush in with salt.

Have a little hardness of heart, for a bit of "fuck you too" helps mitigate the pain of being disrespected by strangers searching for someone to kick.

A lot of the hate seems to be based on class and gender. Resentment that the young lady was from a family that could afford college (for a female) and international travel.

nutcracker46··on The case of 737 MAX: An old design with modern complications
That problem of modern complications and a kludge of "modules" or "units" as remedies is the central problem of the 737 MAX. Why? Because Southwest and a few other customers wanted the 737 pushed, beaten, hacked, and morphed into a 757 but retain the 737 model /type certification.

Alright, you have it. How's that working out? Any regrets for not listening to advocates for continuing the 757 or starting a mini 787 type?

nutcracker46··on Reddit Has Become a Battleground of Alleged Chinese Trolls
The article rings very true, about the wumao and other trolls infesting reddit.

Go back to about 2016 and note the trends through today. Subreddits r/china, r/sino, and r/worldnews have seen an obvious influx of postings pushing the CCP viewpoint, then using downvotes to suppress opposing views.

I left reddit after growing weary of the never ending predictions of China's gangsters leading the world and the thousands of ways Western civilization is failing.

Those hyppocrite oligarchs are first to quietly buy homes and send their children to Canada, while threatening any Chinese critics overseas.

Reddit trolks as just one finger of the state fist, otherwise threatening: "Delete your anti-Party social media posts and Github code or we'll throw your mother in jail."

nutcracker46··on The Korean War Prisoner Who Never Came Home (2013)
Good for Dunn, who found a way to live a peaceful life with his wife and not have to grow old in Baltimore.
nutcracker46··on Christchurch NZ: Mass Shooting
More gun toting incel throwbacks who cannot cope with the reality of modern demographics.
nutcracker46··on Australia had “automatically” blocked all access to schoolstrike4climate.com
Ineffective. Circumventing government imposed website blocks is trivially easy. It is a waste to even try.
nutcracker46··on Taiwan’s New Digital Democracy
Evidence that Chinese people really can not only govern themselves but also innovate in the development of democracy.
nutcracker46··on US refuses to ground Boeing 737 Max
This is a "fifth risk" scenario, where the FAA misjudges other countries' aviation authorities as mere America bashers. The Feds also misjudge their own threat environment, gambling that the rate of hull losses due to MCAS problems is low enough to fly through.

The question, "What if we're wrong?" doesn't get asked. Instead, the FAA Administrator's boss tweets a complaint about aircraft being too complicated. No, the problem isn't overcomplication, it is failure to build, document, and train for the aircraft and pilots you have, not the ones you want.

The Trump FAA are clueless political hacks, not professional safety experts and airmen. They don't handle black swans well, and think of economic costs before human costs.

nutcracker46··on FAA Database: 20 Pilot Write-Ups Incl. UI and MCAS issues
Be aware; the list contains a number of events involving the B737-800, which is an NG aircraft, not the MAX.
nutcracker46··on Why is China refusing to stop the flow of fentanyl?
Consider fentanyl to be a weapon against the West, which China has no intention of curtailing.

If people are to stop dying, they MUST find a way to not use it. Get off fentanyl or die. Get off fentanyl and find a way to live, and take the pain of life.

Perhaps Magnitsky style sanctions on companies and executives producing fentanyl would be effective in reducing supply, but demand is the ultimate problem.

nutcracker46··on China Has No Use for Democracy
More propaganda from vested interests who thrive where human rights and rule of law are absent. If you want to see the Chinese future, look at the Soviet Union, Venezuela, and even Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Are there any reasonable people here on HN who are willing to actually trade their lives to live as a Uighur in China or a Saudi female? Or any sort of Venezuelan? Have fun with your life without representative govetnment or respect for individual rights.

nutcracker46··on How We’ll Forget John Lennon: Our culture has two types of forgetting
I Don't believe in Goldman His type like a curse Instant karma's going to get him If I don't get him first...
nutcracker46··on Indian Railway Plans to have airport like security
That is a trend. Ever been on one of China's subways or intercity trains? Scrutiny has increased over time, and the checks especially for intercity travel are near what one expects for a plane ride.

A thorough security system would also look into other data associated with the ticket buyer.

Somewhere in there is a privacy issue. How much info does the state need on a passenger to quantify risk, based on an intention to board a train or plane?

nutcracker46··on [dead]
There are more airlines with similar policies. Take a look at companies operating in the Far East, and you'll find tight standards for both age and BMI. Often these go beyond health and into projecting a company image.
nutcracker46··on Xi Jinping says Taiwan “must and will be” reunited with China
Xi should consider the effect of vastly reduced foreign trade after an attempt to take Taiwan by force.
nutcracker46··on Xi Jinping says Taiwan “must and will be” reunited with China
We will soon notice whether the populist West will support government with the consent of the governed or stand by while Taiwan is thrown under the bus.

The history of Crimea indicates that Taiwan's only hope is to aggresively apply violence as necessary for its independence.

nutcracker46··on Chinese companies rally around Huawei after CFO arrest
The boycotts are hollow when Chinese airlines continue to buy Boeing and Bombardier jets.
nutcracker46··on Chinese companies rally around Huawei after CFO arrest
Trump can pardon a guilty verdict, but he cannot force charges to be dropped.
nutcracker46··on Chinese companies rally around Huawei after CFO arrest
They are not stuck. They are adhering to the principle called rule of law, where the accused are extradited, tried in court, and guilt is based on evidence instead of family status.
nutcracker46··on Chinese companies rally around Huawei after CFO arrest
I sense an argument that it would be easier for everyone to simply let Meng walk away. What, is she more special than another bloke who lies to the bank about transactions? If yes, let us flush rule of law down the toilet.

Whoosh! Now the only rule is Darwinism.

nutcracker46··on Chinese companies rally around Huawei after CFO arrest
That's a viewpoint of a bullshit legal system of thugs, based on the accused being guilty until proven innocent.
nutcracker46··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
Digital is robust too - you can run mesh networks of phones and wifi equipment.

Hams have a rep for mostly holding on to ancient technology, but they have demonstrated wideband microwave mesh networking with off the shelf hardware and lower bandwidth HF networking. Those goodies are more effective than the CW and SSB depictions in movies.

nutcracker46··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
Satellites yes, and mobile phone infrastructure derives time and frequency from GNSS.
nutcracker46··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
Window antennas work fairly well, but a roof mounted antenna / preamp is far more reliable.
nutcracker46··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
Local service for houses or buildings could be provided service with limited power signals under rules for low power devices / FCC Part 15. Yes, you would need hardware to get your satnav (or mobile phone) signals and create the replacements for your LF/MF/HF dependent devices.

You have to ask yourself, "Where is the point of diminishing returns in retaining dependency on signals like WWV / WWVH?"

By the way eLoran will probably be the terrestrial back up for GNSS based position / navigation / timing. Also, if we get to the geopolitical state of satellites being destroyed, there will be a truckload of larger problems to worry about.

Any nation with the hubris to destroy GNSS birds deserves the nukes they suffer in return. Any nation who lets it happen, because the leader is numbnutted, deserves to suffer a breakdown for not being more mature in managing its geopolitical situation.

Fifth Risk indeed.

nutcracker46··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
There may be an interesting market not only for simulated WWVB but WWV / WWVH if someone absolutely needs to sync from HF. Those HF signals are notoriously unstable in phase, so a locally simulated signal may actually be better.

Here's an example of work on simulating WWVB, not yet in mass production:

https://sites.google.com/site/wayneholder/controlling-time.

He could use a precision frequency source if a precise 60 kHz was absolutely necessary.

nutcracker46··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
WWV, WWVH, and WWVB are more than charity for timekeepers. They distribute time and frequency, traceable to a national standard, for one leg of "positioning, navigation, and timing."

Before GPS and the internet, numerous services depended on those signals. I would argue that now, we have positioning, navigation, and timing from multiple satellite systems (and a phone network providing excellent time & freq references derived from satellites). We have internet time synced to atomic standards and satnav. All of the modern references are more precise, accurate, and stable than WWV, WWVH, and WWVB.

As to devices which sync from WWVB, there are gadgets which can get GPS time and transmit an LF signal for syncing those devices. No problems, ladies and gents, you've still got time.

nutcracker46··on YouTube's Copyright Protection System Is a Mess
Fuck YouTube and the copyright trolls infesting the service.

I have repeatedly fought copyright claims on material that was obviously public domain. Being tired of reminding claimants and YouTube that NASA air to ground comms and presidential speeches are not subject to copyright, I deleted the content.

There were absurd claims, where my uploads were on YouTube for years before the claimants published their material, and the audio was from events recorded by the U.S. government a half century ago.

Yeah, fuck YouTube and the copyright trolls who infest it.

nutcracker46··on Indian government to intercept, monitor, and decrypt citizens’ computers
It is easy to task authorities with intercept and decryption duties; actually doing it successfully is another matter entirely. Mathematics works both ways, friends.
