nusaru··on GitHub Desktop 3.2: Preview your pull request
So basically, now we can do `git diff master` in a GUI. Hooray, I guess.
nusaru··on How a Zig IDE Could Work
Was hoping the author found a solution to (in my view) Zig's biggest shortcoming with generic types: a parameter that accepts all instances of a generic type must either (a) be declared as "anytype" or (b) also require a comptime parameter for the generic type argument. For example, the standard library passes around instances of std.io.Writer as anytype, so zls auto-completion doesn't work.

Also see: comptime interfaces proposal https://github.com/ziglang/zig/issues/1268

nusaru··on Dwarf Fortress has sold half a million copies
Thank you. I just now went to buy the game and nearly bought it on Steam but I remembered this comment at the last moment.
nusaru··on A vid in which Vim saves me hours and hundreds of clicks (2018) [video]
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was outside recently and forgot to take them off, or perhaps he was about to go out sometime after the video ended.
nusaru··on Show HN: GitImage – Version Control for Images
As a programmer, I appreciate the incorporation of Git-like qualities into GitImage. While Git is a familiar tool for those in the tech industry, it may be worth considering using a different analogy to better appeal to photographers, marketers, etc. This could make the product more accessible and appealing to a wider audience.
nusaru··on fzf – command line fuzzy finder
fzf is great. A command I use often is:

  fzf -m -i | xargs code
Of course, you can replace "code" with your editor of choice.

There's also https://github.com/plibither8/refined-hacker-news which has more recent commits

nusaru··on GitHub Actions being abused to run crypto mining
This is why we can’t have nice things.
nusaru··on Google algebra help is confusing
My (21 yo) default assumption is that Google gives whatever result is relevant to the most people. If you want algebra, just add the word “algebra” to your query. I think this could be a useful example for teaching people how to narrow down their Google searches.
nusaru··on Show HN: Rmt an alternative to rm with trash written in Rust
Nice! Now I'll just be a single missing keystroke away from accidentally deleting my files permanently.
nusaru··on RavynOS – Finesse of macOS, freedom of FreeBSD
> I've used Mac for years, and still don't know what the yellow button does.

Minimize. That’s what the yellow button does. It’s as simple as clicking it once.

nusaru··on Steelmanning: Discover the truth by helping your opponent
Wouldn't the obvious solution be to steelman whatever you were steelmanning against in the first place?
nusaru··on Olbers' Paradox
> The redshift hypothesised in the Big Bang model [...]

Doesn't sound to me like it's more than a hypothesis, but I could be wrong.

nusaru··on Olbers' Paradox
So basically, we don't exactly know why the night sky is mostly dark? (At least, that's what I got out of this)
nusaru··on How much Rust in Firefox?
It's interesting how the C++ files used .cp for the file extension instead of the usual .cpp nowadays. I did some brief research, and my understanding is that .cp was used by the CodeWarrior IDE, which has now been replaced by Eclipse.
nusaru··on Moderna will develop mRNA vaccines for some of the world’s worst diseases
I agree. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I imagine it’ll be a huge advantage to be able to produce new vaccines at the same rate that a weaponized virus can mutate.
nusaru··on New iPhone SE
Was it too difficult to revert to using a normal passcode? Genuine question; I too am a fan of touch ID. I’d get annoyed to have to update it constantly.
nusaru··on Single binary executable packages
Meanwhile, Apple has gone through two deprecations of CPU architectures: first PowerPC and then Intel. Macs are nice, but I wish they had the same commitment to backwards compatibility.
nusaru··on MDN Redesign
Thank you, I wasn't certain if they added the right-hand sidebar with this redesign. I remember consciously thinking that MDN was better than other sites because it lacked said sidebar.
nusaru··on An Ableton Live set is gzipped XML (2012)
His last commit was actually in 2012; the repository you looked at had an issue opened more recently (or a star, not sure how GitHub’s “last updated” feature works).

Hoping he responds to my email.

nusaru··on An Ableton Live set is gzipped XML (2012)
I wonder what happened to Michael (author of this article). Radio silence for nearly a decade.
nusaru··on Google Search Is Dying
> They're hemorrhaging users fast.

This isn't obvious to me. How do you know this?

nusaru··on What Fortran does better than C-like languages
I guess some people are afraid to use a gun for fear that they might shoot their foot—or that someone else will. I think goto’s are useful.
nusaru··on Show HN: AskPaulGraham
Q: Why open source?

A: Because it's the right thing to do.

nusaru··on Ruby: Porting YJIT to Rust
It's worth noting that their backend (VM and parser) currently uses MRuby, which is written in C, so not yet quite a "real" implementation in my view.
nusaru··on Website moves the “change cookie settings” button when you hover over it
The "Accept All" button moves when I hover over "Define Settings" but it's a bit flaky.
nusaru··on 54% of adults in the United States have prose literacy below the 6th-grade level
> I genuinely don't get what civil discourse is supposed to achieve.

I could be wrong but I think the purpose of being civil is so that people will actually want to talk to you.

nusaru··on Gobolinux : Redefining Linux filesystem hierarchy
I've only tried Nix once or twice, and I'm left wondering: why don't they use a scripting language? Is part of the appeal that the Nix language is a functional language?
