nullorempty··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
Well, 'history is written by the victors' is not just a toss.
nullorempty··on AirTag reveals Amazon is trashing rare books to train AI
... because now it can be done at scale.
nullorempty··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
The content is preserved obviously, and I hope that sometime in the future it will be made available in its original form.

What worries me about the trends is inevitable sanitization of content or straight out falsification.

nullorempty··on Flock wanted to tap dashcams in rideshare vechicles to add to surveillance data
Hm, two questions:

- Who is paying for surveillance? - To whose benefit is it used?

nullorempty··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
ha, i immediately think alert from a three letter company's on-call app. Now that's unsettling and straight fucking offensive!
nullorempty··on I’m leaving OpenAI to build telepathy
From the article.

>Thought-to-text, aka telepathy

No, that's not telepathy. I'd leave the term alone. Consider it to be reserved for... well... telepathy!

nullorempty··on The End of an Era
Let's suppose an AI and a Human wrote a book each and it's the same word-for-word.

Will the effect of the book be the same on readers?

From a perspective of classic materialism the effect should be the same.

But what if the thought is material?

How does the world change then if AI takes over a significant portion of writing.

nullorempty··on The great wealth transfer reality check
I think it's reasonable to expect amplification but I am not sure how reasonable it would be to expect sustainable amplification. I feel that AI removes the meaning from work and with that gone we eventually start loosing the talent.

And 0 talent by 10 ( or even 50 ) is a fucking 0!

nullorempty··on The great wealth transfer reality check
Let's not assume that 6 figure salary is close to 999,999. In reality it's closer to 100,001.

And when you factor in inflation and increased housing cost the comparison starts to differ greatly.

Millennials have it pretty tough.

nullorempty··on GCC steering committee announces AI policy
Post scarcity society needs different operating principle. It will be a bumpy road to that after capitalism collapses.
nullorempty··on Did They Ghost You?
Is it already provided by the background check companies?
nullorempty··on AI as Normal Technology- What Will Be Left for Us to Work On?
Given that becoming an expert in a field takes 10000 hours and that no field can be assumed to be safe from AI who will want to invest that much time into anything?

Who will want to invest 10000 hours into anything that can be taken by AI?

No-one.

No-one in the current social-economic construct.

nullorempty··on Gleam Is Now on Tangled
Tangled-ha... Now I know what the next one will be called.
nullorempty··on EU ban on destruction of unsold clothes and shoes enters into application
They should really follow up with a similar policy on food.

At a nearby whole foods a large portion of produce goes to waste. It's heartbreaking to see.

nullorempty··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
Excellent point!

I remember seeing a story shared by AMS RDS on linked-in that basically said... "Now with predictable pricing"

Huh?

nullorempty··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
The latest status update says things will be back to normal for everyone on the 19th.

This spells for me a busy on-call and work over the weekend.

It sucks!

You think there will be lessons learnt from mistakes?

Not a fucking chance! Business as usual come monday!

nullorempty··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
Technically, there could be a test. It could just be wrong!
nullorempty··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
This ^^^ amplified by indifference and not giving a shit caused by "AI Adoption".

There is literally no fucking reason to try to improve your skill. Any IDIOT with AI will do an OK job.

And no one is shooting for better than OK.

nullorempty··on 42% of adults rely on their parents for financial support
Yes and my first ask is to stop the wars.
nullorempty··on 42% of adults rely on their parents for financial support
So you have no objections to wars. I see.

News lie regularly and I happen to hold the opinion for a while.

Studies also lie, another entity that lies regularly is government! All of them!

When you live long enough you learn to trust your eyes not your ears.

As far as the western civilization goes - it's being killed off. Pay attention.

nullorempty··on The zero-cost fallacy: open-source software in the agentic era
My reaction is to the discussion more than the the article.

Many have noted that LLMs are relatively good at writing code because they learned from all the code and other material, such as books, written before.

But let's say that we no longer produce the learning material, will LLMs be able to progress on their own or the slop they make (and read) will eventually lead to the decay of the models?

Will the models decay if left to their own devices?

nullorempty··on What will be left for us to work on?
I think eventually things will work themselves out, but our immediate future appears to be bleak. The elites, including political elites, use AI to acquire more wealth, to become more efficient at war. They already don't give a flying fuck about what the peoples think as you can not hold them accountable for their actions. Admit it! You can't hold them accountable in the West.

So they are running unchecked to get richer, get more power, get more stuff. What needs to happen for that to change?

nullorempty··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2026
Oh boy :) I think that would come with IERS Tax.
nullorempty··on Chat Control passed first round in EU Parliament
That's an excellent take.

Unfortunately, verified devices will close that loophole.

nullorempty··on Finland's last analogue landline phones go silent after 150 years
Pity, copper made everything better.
nullorempty··on Mir Books – Books from the Soviet Era
Some of the titles aren't translated - a cursory search did not turn up a downloadable version of the Bull's Hour, but search flibusta - titles are in russian but thanks to AI ...
nullorempty··on Mir Books – Books from the Soviet Era
Since we are on the topic of russian literature I'd definitely recommend reading something other than the usual suspects Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.

One of my personal favourites is Bulgakov'с Master and Margarita and The Bull's Hour by Ivan Efremov.

Bull's Hour is actually amazing as it explores societies built on different principles using a form of a novel.

nullorempty··on Mir Books – Books from the Soviet Era
Russians consider their profession a calling and try to be the best at it. Makes big difference when it's calling and not just-a-job.

I dunno what attitude russia's gen-z holds towards profession but in my time it was definitely considered a calling.

nullorempty··on Mir Books – Books from the Soviet Era
Not only that. Corporations are filled with excellent software developers from Russia who did not go to any specialized schools or graduated from prestigious universities.
nullorempty··on Giant trees have no trouble pumping water to top branches: new research
>Giant trees have no trouble pumping water to top branches

Hm, may be because they are not really "pumping" the water?
