nullandvoid··on Outlook just asked me if I want to upgrade to bigger ads
The anti pattern here is that the lamen clearly can't distinguish the ads from actual emails, hence the EU stepped in.

Instead of just moving to a different ad delivery mechanism (right option) they are still trying to push the inline option (which is objectively "worse" for most users, but good for bottom line) as the best choice, using language that make the "good choice" seem like a stupid option (slower and less space). Hence the language and design here certainly reads like an anti pattern to me.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: What kind of online tools are you using, missing or can be improved?
Might be worth checking out https://blog.feedly.com/leo/, I personally haven't used this feature yet, but seems to match what you're explained.
nullandvoid··on Maybe we could tone down the JavaScript (2016)
I'm sure you already know this (although I've had conversations with people that hate on TS in the past, that didn't, hence my post), but Typescript is JavaScript at runtime, there are no performance hits by using it in production (and negligible build times on save during development).
nullandvoid··on Apple added an orange dot that’s a showstopper for live visuals
You're picking a really odd hill to die on. Is it that hard to imagine that having random imagery (orange dot) showing on your live work (which a client has paid $$$ for) is a complete no-go for professionals (if you ever want to get hired again)?
nullandvoid··on YouTube’s TikTok competitor YouTube Shorts is rolling out globally
Shorts cemented me extending my block on youtube another 3 months.

I already have a block most the time, due to being a sucker for youtubes junk food algorithm (even with history off and not signed in amazingly..), but I find shorts to be the most non-informational yet addictive form of media content, which it sucked to see were taking over youtube.

nullandvoid··on Writing books is not really a good idea
Oops I skimmed the article and missed that - thanks.
nullandvoid··on Writing books is not really a good idea
2.6 million would mean 1 in 3000 people on earth, bought at least 1 book in the last year. That doesn't seem very surprising to me?

Although I think you meant to write 27 million (268 * 100k)

edit - ignore, I missed that it was 2.6m unique in the article

nullandvoid··on The Healing Power of JavaScript
I've been a little while out of doing side projects (I've always loved coding outside of work - but perhaps burnt myself an existing trading bot project). The last few months I've been building a multiplayer "io" type zombie survival game. and I've really fallen in love with coding again.

Solving these little puzzles (as oppose to just completing the project) is super rewarding. Time to add collisions, human damage, horde behavior, a HUD system.

Everything is like a little piece of a puzzle, it's interesting to compare it to something more analogue (such as an actual puzzle), it feels like it resonates after my various battles over the weekend.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: I feel my career is at a dead end. Any advice on what could I do?
I'm a little younger, but also try my hardest not to get dragged into more management (it's easy to happen).

Are you worried you're not going to be skilled enough in management - and therefore you're trying to get "ahead of the game"?

If not then what's your fear - code until you can no longer, and then take a few months off, re-train and go into management (as a skilled coder you'll already have a big advantage if you want to manage teams in tech). Life is too short to work a job you don't like.

Is foam not a regression in your flow? You mentioned the cross platform being an important feature

I'd love to give it a go,but that's a bit of a necessity for me.

Admittedly perhaps notion for fleeting notes, with a foam setup for managing permanent notes wheb at mt desktop may be a good compromise

I'm hoping something good is going to come out of notions backlinks support. $15/m is pretty steep on roam, and I do prefer notion for most things

nullandvoid··on Reddit suspended two people who use Dystopia, across three accounts
+1 I've made the switch over the last few weeks great site. Bypasses the annoying sign up to view replies to threads / app download spam
nullandvoid··on How to Make Your Code Reviewer Fall in Love with You
I do agree but some features are complex, and invesitbely PRs will sometimes be large. Using this tactic it help keep things in check even then.

I just want to be able to open up a review, click a commit ID to view a diff, and be able to move on

Any additional steps are unnecessary friction I feel

nullandvoid··on How to Make Your Code Reviewer Fall in Love with You
You can squash into a single commit at the end

Creating a fresh commit for each comment, provides me an easily clickable diff link

nullandvoid··on How to Make Your Code Reviewer Fall in Love with You
No problem I understand, it took me a while before I ended up sticking with (1).

I still think it's much easier for the author to make those changes, and attach a commit ID to the relevant comment, than it is the other way around.

As the article states, respect the code reviewers time. If i've put in some effort to point out issues, and you don't even spend the effort to address each comment individually, then you are not respecting the reviewers time.

Maybe there are some cases you are right, but as a general rule i'll just always follow (1) as an author, as it honestly doesn't cost me much time, and makes my reviewers life easier.

nullandvoid··on How to Make Your Code Reviewer Fall in Love with You
A couple from my pet peeve list -

1) ATOMIC COMMITS

Nothing worse than a single commit, to address 10 separate comments. I don't want to have to go back, and cross reference my comments with your wall of changes

2) DO NOT SELF RESOLVE A COMMENT

Wait for the reviewer to checkout your solution, I want to learn through your fix, aswell as make sure it's what I expected.

nullandvoid··on 16-inch MBP 2x slower than M1 MacBook Air in a real-world Rust compile
For me on windows, multiple virtual desktops, browser (chrome for work, ff for personal) IDE's and VMs (ubuntu running in wsl, and any docker containers) made 16gn unuseable for me

And that's before I decided to boot up a game with all of the existing applications

For me the £50 is well worth not having to care about pruning applications constantly!

nullandvoid··on Black Screen After MacBook Pro Update to macOS Big Sur
Wsl ubuntu and hyper terminal for nix, then chocolatey for windows apps should have you covered
nullandvoid··on Anki Cards for Fast.ai
For anyone looking to start their Anki journey, or extend on existing knowledge, I recommend the following read http://augmentingcognition.com/ltm.html

It's worth noting, the author actually suggests against using others anki packs. They should be a personal experience.

None the less I think these kind of things, are useful to find any gaps, and provide inspiration on how to structure your own collection.

nullandvoid··on A fun website that simulates fluid
Spent a little too long playing with all the settings there. Very cool and buttery smooth.
nullandvoid··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
Just delete the alias once you see any rubbish hit your inbox

Honestly with 100 sites I've maybe had to delete 1 or 2 so its very low effort

nullandvoid··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
For me fast mail alias for every site I use, and a password manager, mean spam is a problem of the past

Feels great having separation on every site

nullandvoid··on Show HN: What would mechanical programming look like?
Very neat, shall give it a go. The site is buttery smooth as well, really nice job there
nullandvoid··on Introduction to the Zettelkasten Method
Bookmarking a page doesn't mean you absorb its contents, and I don't think a few days is adequate time to perfect these techniques.

I'm the same as you, but a month or so in and still learning. Personally it's a price i'm willing to take for what will be a lifelong mission

A lifes work of bookmarks isn't very helpful in the grand scheme of things

nullandvoid··on Show HN: Dendron – A Hierarchical Tool for Thought
This is really interesting for me. I've just got into roam the last few months after an intertest in trying zettelkasten (and my notion growing rather unwieldly), but the $15/m is grinding at me. The idea I'll be locked in at that price forever more doesn't sit well

For me org-roam doesn't scratch the portability itch (easily add notes on my phone etc), but I'm actively looking for alternatives I can make the jump for, and rely on it not disappearing in a few years

I really like the idea of this extension, but as mentioned I'm not sure this existing only in VSCode helps me much at this point.

Props for releasing though, great to see this revolution in note taking apps, and shifts in thought around the optimal way to take them.

nullandvoid··on VW sees EVs making up 90% of Norway sales in 2021
I know nothing much on this topic, but worth considering Norway's population is 5 million, versus 330 million in the US.

All of a sudden it doesn't seem that impressive if Norway is only producing 15% the amount of the US

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How did you get started in tech and/or Linux?
Glad it's helped, good luck on your journey to reclaiming some extra hours back!
nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How did you get started in tech and/or Linux?
Similar experience for me, played all through my teens and early twenties. Something has clicked in the last year, that I want to spend my time more productively

What's worked for me has been using a blocker. For example "cold turkey" I'm using ATM. I normally set blocks of 1 month or so, then end up binging a gaming weekend when it becomes unblocked, then go again

Seems to be working pretty well. Considering just setting it away for 3 month blocks, but I'm still hanging on to there being a nice middle ground :)
