nullandvoid··on Positive news from 2023
Coming from a brit - it seems crazy Spain wasn't already doing this!
nullandvoid··on Bluesky posts are finally open to the public
I got early access a few months back, felt like it was 50% furry content.

Not that I have any problems with furries, each to their own - rather it's just seemingly pretty niche for a newcomer to get flooded with posts about - perhaps that really was all the content there was.

nullandvoid··on He felt 'creatively dead', then harnessed the power of boredom
I think this is a learnt skill. If you're not constantly engaging with new material, asking questions on what you're reading, learning with intent, then your brain isn't going to evolve from this baseline on its own randomly.

I say this as someone trying to move the needle towards this same thing.

Some days I am suprised at my motivation to learn new things, and questions I ask / relationships I form - much more so when i've been putting in time deliberarely practicing how I learn each day.

nullandvoid··on 3Blue1Brown Calculus Blog Series
Does anyone have reccomendation for programming / architecture youtubers in similar style?
nullandvoid··on Building end-to-end security for Messenger
Search works fine on WhatsApp, not sure whether it's client / server though.
nullandvoid··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
Fair, I have never seen a single jewellery / luxury sponsor (It's more Raycon, Raid shadow legends etc for me), however I wouldn't ever purchase them even if I did.

My experience is that most sponsors are overpriced, largely garbage products, that they must pay YouTube to promote in order to sell.

Do you not get bored of spending ~10% of the total time you watch videos being spent on largely brainrot gambling / predatory game advertisements?
nullandvoid··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Seemed like a pretty productive conversation to me. As a non-twitter regular I now know how to make things more bearable in the future thanks to this discussion.
nullandvoid··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Reading that thread made me realise how low the signal to noise ratio is over on twitter.

90% of the replies scrolling down were rehashed versions of "can't believe they used Google meet"

nullandvoid··on You Can Make Your Own Luck
How so?

The idea here is that being successful on any venture is half chance (luck). If you're creating more chances (putting in the work, "being prepared") you're creating more chances.

nullandvoid··on You Can Make Your Own Luck
"Luck favours the prepared" is a saying that's stuck with me
nullandvoid··on Northlight technology in Alan Wake 2
I hope valve doesn't fumble the bag with source 2, and actually makes it a viable competitor in the engine space.

My limited exposure to it (via s&box) is extremely positive, the hammer mapping tool is absolutely amazing to work with, and from what I've seen way ahead of unity / unreal on this front at-least.

nullandvoid··on uBlock Origin 1.53
I find YT is only useable via the following combination of extensions these days

- Ublock (still works for me, maybe it's a Firefox thing) - News feed eradictor (hides reccomended vids) - Pocket tube (how subscription management should have been) - Sponsorblock (auto skip sponsors which are typically gambling or predatory games)

nullandvoid··on uBlock Origin 1.53
I feel the same about my s7 edge I keep as a spare, although currently using the s21 ultra and no complaints
nullandvoid··on Scientists discover the highest energy gamma-rays ever from a pulsar
I have a question - what would happen if you were to drop one of these spoons of matter that weigh 5 billion tonnes onto the floor right now, where would it stop?
nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How do you manage photos, philosophically?
Use slidebox to sort phone photo's into relevant folders, then sync those directories to onedrive using android app
nullandvoid··on It's okay to make something nobody wants
"A life well lived is a series of personal obsessions shared without expectation of an audience."

nullandvoid··on Issue affecting the Gateway API on the Braintree platform
This is typically referred to event carried state transfer for anyone curious.

The premise being high service availability and low latency to serve requests (no need to talk to source of truth) with the tradeoffs of higher storage / processing costs and from my experience higher complexity.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Protecting private data during a robbery.
I'm struggling to find information on it, I can find a reddit post which mentions it's been stripped from Samsung at-least

I can find an Fdroid app https://f-droid.org/en/packages/me.lucky.duress/ which looks to implement this idea of wiping / broadcasting on a certain pin press, however the problem is the attacker still wants in to your phone, which is now suspiciously empty

It feels like a second profile with some good enough looking apps may be the perfect solution here.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Protecting private data during a robbery.
I'm currently travelling around Asia, simply not going places where there's a non zero risk of being robbed unfortunately isn't an option.

The spare phone is a good idea, unless you get patted down I guess

nullandvoid··on Game devs say Unity's new install fee is a threat to everyone, including gamers
As an anecdote there are games I have easily re-installed 20-30+ times as I quit for a time, change machine etc.
nullandvoid··on On-demand audio passes linear audio
I'm a fan of garden radio for anyone who hasn't used, always fun to tune in to radio stations from other side of the world.
nullandvoid··on AI demand is already shrinking
I know this is sarcasm, but is this not similar to what ChatGPT with bing integration was doing?

I had limited exposure before it got removed, but it would actually spell out the searches it would do (often more than one) to answer your question - when it worked it was actually pretty magical.

I never did look into the mechanism for when it decided to search the web, versus just provide you an answer however.

nullandvoid··on Learn AutoHotKey by stealing my scripts
One of my fondest AHK memories was back when I created a bot for a runescape private server when I was younger.

It clicked on pixels of a certain character in game to thieve an NPC, and could detect full inventory, bank and go again.

nullandvoid··on Faster Whisper Transcription with CTranslate2
Ate there any plans / usage examples of using this behind a Web app (node/react is my go to stack at the minute).

I'm currently using openai whisper rest API, but sporadic latency spikes are a problem.

nullandvoid··on Geddit: Open-source, Reddit client for Android without using API
It's the very definition of user hostility. They are forcing me to install the app for no good reason other than increased engagement. I don't want to use the app and all the rubbish that comes with it, the website has worked fine for the last 10+ years, and continues to on desktop.

> "The things you've mentioned aren't even dark patterns. One of them could be considered just a figament of your imagination. And one "Oh they make me log in to see porn" like really? Really?"

I see you decided to completely ignore what I wrote and twist it into something else, to repeat;

- NSFW posts are majority NOT porn but normal posts

- They already show you the image on the timeline - so stopping the post from loading after clicking, and instead showing sign up CTA's is nothing but a dark pattern / cheap trick to drive sign ups.

Again, dark patterns / cheap tricks are user hostile.

nullandvoid··on Geddit: Open-source, Reddit client for Android without using API
Of course Reddit is user hostile.

- Can't use web version without getting the mobile version banner forced down your throat every other interaction.

- Actively making the non-app version worse than the mobile, for no reason other than engagement metrics.

- Not able to view "NSFW" posts (of which everything is just false labeled as that) without logging in; even though it shows you the image on the timeline (the entire "NSFW" part) - a dark pattern / cheap tactic to drive sign up.

And this is just to name a few, dark patterns are a plenty across their site.

I won't go into the API side of things as others have said it better, and it seems you've already made your mind up there.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal finances?
I use buckets https://www.budgetwithbuckets.com/

I track my balances across various sources, updating once a month. I also set my outgoings.

Funnily enough I don't really use the buckets feature too much, simply the graph over time of savings, and ability to set goals / monthly costs for review is enough.

nullandvoid··on Elon Musk Calls Mark Zuckerberg a ‘Cuck’ as Threads Nears 100M Users
I share the same views as OP / yourself regarding not working at these places or using their products, but boycotting open source tech by <shitty company> does seem a little unnecessarily limiting.
nullandvoid··on Defecting from North Korea is now harder
I'm not the most educated in this area, however this episode of darknet diaries (which seems to be well researched of the many I have listened to) paints a similar picture to OP https://open.spotify.com/episode/0DsGyzP9fYQ9LM6YiT5NS7?si=L... and includes interviews from several defectors.

It seems disingenuous to try and brush off the well documented brutality that is the way of life in North Korea, as being something made up by US / South Korea..
