nuker··on Ask HN: What is that one program in Windows that umatched in Linux?
MS Bitlocker with TPM.
nuker··on VeraCrypt: Free open-source disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
Sniffing the bus can be defeated by using encrypted comms. It is disabled by Windows for some reason, but it works as designed in other secure boot implementations. I hope :)
nuker··on VeraCrypt: Free open-source disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
Can it set-up /boot volume encryption and using of TPM for unattended reboots? Thats the deal breaker feature.

Im watching Netflix’es Narcos: Mexico now, and close ups on cigarettes, lighting cigarettes and such is mind bogging, every few minutes!
nuker··on While you were streaming: Smoking on demand, Netflix (2019)
“Netflix programs continued to display much more tobacco than broadcast or cable. For both the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, episodic programming on Netflix had a greater total number of tobacco depictions than programs aired on broadcast or cable TV, with “Stranger Things” continuing to show the most tobacco overall. Researchers found that 100% of “Stranger Things” episodes coded included tobacco.”

If in AWS, use Cloudformation. Your future colleagues will thank you.

nuker··on Building a digital music collection in 2023
Pro tip: import your collection to Music app on a Mac, buy “iTunes Match” subscription, it gets available as Library on iOS devices. Match likes high bitrates, better chance on matching a song and not uploading.

nuker··on Terraform is dead; Long live Pulumi?
IaaC code would be totally different, not the same, as Terraform sells it.
nuker··on Terraform is dead; Long live Pulumi?
CDK defaults are too default, and you still have CFN in the end, which you have to view and approve anyway.
nuker··on Terraform is dead; Long live Pulumi?
Want an advice from a pro? Stick with Cloudformation (CFN). Split stuff smartly between stacks. Use Outputs export/import. This is default IaaC way in AWS. I would not touch anything else, rather insist on full rewrite. Reuse templates using Parameters. Stack can be rolled-back, checked for drift, checked for changes before changes and so on.

CFN has the least LOC between them all and is easy to create in your text editor.

Just don’t use nested stacks :) oh, and multi-cloud is an urban legend, myth.

nuker··on Apple expands M3 Mac testing ahead of rumored October launch
Meanwhile Apple broke high refresh rate for external displays on Intel machines and not in a hurry to fix it:

nuker··on DisplayPort: Taming the Altmode
FWIW, I ran `/S/L/E/AppleGraphicsControl.kext/Contents/MacOS/AGDCDiagnose -a` on Catalina and Ventura and diffed it.

MacOS Ventura seem to properly sense that monitor supports DSC: "DSC Support: 1, DSC Algorithm revision: 33" , but then simply disables it anyway: "DSC Enable: 0x0".

nuker··on DisplayPort: Taming the Altmode
> they broke it for the Pro Display XDR

What do you mean, they had to kill DSC for Pro Display XDR to work?

nuker··on DisplayPort: Taming the Altmode
Yea, the Apple Engineering Department asked me to run a ton of diagnostics, both on Catalina and Ventura, then came back with “Would you ask Dell to confirm their monitor is compatible with MacOS Ventura specifically”. Lol
nuker··on DisplayPort: Taming the Altmode
MacOS broke the Display Stream Compression (DSC) in Big Sur, and has not fixed it since. I can have 4k@144Hz in Catalina but only 4k@60Hz in Big Sur - Ventura. On the same hardware, applies to all Intel based macbooks.

Tried support, geniuses, no luck.

nuker··on Terraform best practices for reliability at any scale
Im 10 years working with AWS. I strongly prefer Cloudformation, just separate things smartly between stacks. It has export/import for stack outputs too. Just look at the “root module” mess in this discussion and you’ll get why.

nuker··on Fighting for the open web [image]
Firefox is not a player in this battle, too small. WebKit is.

If Apple one day stops forcing it on iOS, that would be the day the battle was lost, nothing would be stopping Google from taking it all.

nuker··on Fighting for the open web [image]
Why the fox? Safari (WebKit) was always first to implement major privacy features, not Firefox.
nuker··on Apple not fixing broken DSC in MacOS, limiting monitor refresh rate to 60Hz
I have Intel Macbook 16" (2019) and bought Dell G3223Q 4k @ 144Hz monitor and it only shows 60Hz maximum in MacOS Ventura. But it works fine at 4k @ 144Hz in MacOS Catalina, I made Catalina partition just to test it.

Apple support kicks back and forth, engineering department saw my Catalina screenshots proofs, sysdiag logs, and now asks me to show where in Dell specification it says that MacOS Ventura is explicitly supported (sigh). Battle is ongoing.

The DSC in MacOS was broken 3 years ago. All users of Intel Macbooks lost the ability to use high refresh rate on their external monitors.
