nukeop··on Post-Mortem and Security Advisory: Data Exposure After travis-ci.com Outage
First time I hear of this, who uses this and why?
nukeop··on Post-Mortem and Security Advisory: Data Exposure After travis-ci.com Outage
What is a "read-only follower"? Is this a common term when handling databases? Is it different than a slave?
nukeop··on Jevons paradox
Until the resource being used more efficiently becomes automatic labor, in which the demand for human labor dwindles and shrinks overnight.
nukeop··on “Did We Create This Monster?” How Twitter Turned Toxic
Reddit is a marketing platform, not a discussion platform. If a website has tools like shadowbanning and rules that govern the allowed range of opinions that read like something you'd need a law degree to understand, you're on a platform that serves only advertisers and is only useful for promotion and marketing, not discussion.
nukeop··on “Did We Create This Monster?” How Twitter Turned Toxic
Once you start perceiving people whose opinions you don't like as "loud smelly drunks" you're already too far down the rabbit hole to understand the importance of keeping moderation to the absolute minimum (which means keeping out spammers, illegal content and people behaving destructively towards the platform only).

The best forums I've ever been on were those where there were no ratings whatsoever, a linear structure of discussion, and that allowed any range of opinions as long as they were not in the aforementioned groups.

nukeop··on “Did We Create This Monster?” How Twitter Turned Toxic
Reddit is far worse in reinforcing subconscious self-moderation to adhere to the majority opinion. It's present on Hacker News too, since most people use the downvote as a "I disagree" button.
nukeop··on “Did We Create This Monster?” How Twitter Turned Toxic
Let this be a lesson to others, the more censorship and the more draconic your allowed speech rules are, the worse you're off. The quality of overall discussion is negatively correlated with the amount of censorship.
nukeop··on SteamOS, Linux, and Steam Machines
I didn't mean windows, I meant PC gaming.
nukeop··on Trump’s Campaign Said It Was Better at Facebook, and Facebook Agrees
Yes, of course they were. They also made better use of Twitter, and took advantage of the broken clickbait-based news market by generating cheap controversies and using strong language to get free publicity. There's no meme that spreads faster than anger, people love sharing things that make them angry, and it was heavily exploited by this campaign. No matter what you think about his policies, Trump is a master politician that knows how to play his opponents and the media like a fiddle. It's low brow, and it's brutal, but it works.
nukeop··on SteamOS, Linux, and Steam Machines
Steam as a platform is completely, utterly atrocious in all regards. Their client is ancient, outdated, and barely usable, there's no content quality filtering, the greenlight program is a failure that only succeeds in bringing complete bottom of the barrel dreg in 99% of cases, even from a developer's point of view the platform is just a major PITA.

But it has the first mover advantage and that is really everything. Even platforms that are infinitely better, have better tools, support, and pricing (such as itch.io that doesn't require a cent to publish your games) are heavily disadvantaged just because it takes extra work for developers and gamers to adopt them. There's no easy way out of this and Valve can continue being lazy and make major slip-ups every year and there's very little others can do to endanger their heavily entrenched position on the gaming market.

As far as PC (or GNU/Linux in particular) gaming is considered, Steam is everything, and it's not going to change any time soon.

nukeop··on Study shows salaries of young women 8% higher than men in peer group (2010)
This is still an incorrect approach looking at incorrect metrics. According to the government document:

>The gender pay gap is the difference between the average earnings of men and women, expressed relative to men’s earnings. For example, ‘women earn 15% less than men per hour’.

But this is not what should be measured. If there's a mining company that employs 90% men working down in the mine and 10% women doing accountancy, then of course the average wages of men are going to be different than those of women, but that tells us nothing about equal and fair treatment of men and women at this company.

nukeop··on Sunsetting Tor Messenger
Matrix.org/Riot.im has all the encryption you could wish for, a modern, useful interface, and a federated model in which everyone can run their own server and talk to everyone else, just like email.
nukeop··on Study shows salaries of young women 8% higher than men in peer group (2010)
There's no perceptible gap in wages between almost any pair of social groups, provided we compare only similar roles. This has been solved by the market years ago.

We still need more wage transparency. Companies should be required to publicly list all wages, because lack of transparency is detrimental to the workers.

nukeop··on Mailchimp Is Shutting Down ICO and Blockchain-Related Emails
I'm sure there are many people who think this is ok, because it's not the government doing this, but a "private company". Who needs a totalitarian dictatorship when plain old capitalism works as well if not better?
nukeop··on Uber Is Ripping Off Frequent Riders and Here’s How to Avoid It
Please don't call it "ride sharing" or "ride hailing", that's what they want to be called despite being very clearly a taxi service.
nukeop··on Show HN: Password Puppy
How to generate a new password? Any way to customize characters/length? Is there a JSON API?
nukeop··on Show HN: A site that makes Spotify playlists of bands coming to town
Can this be used to create playlists in formats with more interoperating potential, such as JSON?
nukeop··on Update on Async Rendering
Why not just deprecate this API in addition to providing a better way to perform operations commonly invoked this way?
nukeop··on Update on Async Rendering
Why call it "UNSAFE_" if there isn't really anything unsafe about it? I get it, they don't want people using those functions, but why should they decide what work best for other developers and use shady tactics like dishonestly calling something they don't want to be used "unsafe" just so that it causes uneasiness and raises red flags with devs that aren't intimately familiar with React? Facebook is known for its underhanded tactics and React is no exception, they tried to kill patent disputes with its licensing in the past. Now they're trying to control how their library is used in a very deceitful way.
nukeop··on It's not just Facebook. Thousands of companies are spying on you
There's so many things that can change your fingerprint that their methods are useless, unless you continue to use their products willingly and don't block their scripts. Without your willful participation, they are quite helpless.
nukeop··on Facebook denies it collects call and SMS data from phones without permission
"Without permission" is the crucial part. Of course, you have to give the app the permission to do it when you install it, otherwise it will refuse to run. That is why the Android permissions model is fundamentally broken.
nukeop··on Post-SESTA/FOSTA Self-Censoring for Twitter, Reddit, and Other Social Media
If this is what "freedom of speech" earns us then we're better off without it, it's completely useless or even worse, it seems to set us back.
nukeop··on How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’
>no I'm not. What does being black means then? and why bring "jews" into a discussion with race?

Because Jews have different risks of falling ill to many diseases than people of other races. You are still trying to conflate race with religion which makes it clear that you're here to derail the discussion.

nukeop··on How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’
Judaism is not a race, being black means more than just a different skin color, you're intentionally trying to derail the discussion.
nukeop··on How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’
People of different races have different metabolisms and physical characteristics, making them more susceptible to some illnesses but not others, and respond to different medicines differently. This is also important when considering the impact of biology on forensic methods in legal system. Race is also a good predictor of other factors.
nukeop··on How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’
No matter how much the society at large wants to tiptoe the subject, the concept of race has never fell into disuse wherever facts really matters, such as in healthcare or the legal system.
nukeop··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
Webm for retards is one example of censorship on Github. There are plenty of repositories that have no code in them that are perfectly fine by Github rules even if they're just pieces of propaganda.

What I'm trying to argue is that they're hypocrites that are only against censorship when it's applied to them and endangers their profits.

nukeop··on Detecting crypto script kiddies
This is basically an advertisement for a product Sysdig offers. The name is mentioned in every other sentence.
nukeop··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
Github is perfectly fine with censorship on their platform and they frequently use it to take down repositories that use language they don't like, it only becomes a problem when someone else does it to them. That blog post is very dishonest and manipulative too.
nukeop··on Users Abandon Facebook After Cambridge Analytica Findings
You are still forcing others to use it through network effects. Either let it go completely, or don't pretend you're fighting it. We need more people to draw a line in the sand and ditch this oppressive system completely. Facebook wants you to be afraid of living without it.
