> There should not be a two-tier legal system.

That’s a fine philosophical debate, but the law is designed by the rich to favor the rich and while there are a number of exceptions there is little you can do with the legal system without money and lots of it. So while having a truly just system would be neat it just isn’t in the cards for humanity (IMHO) so long as we allow entities to amass “fuck you” money and wield it to their liking.

nucleogenesis··on Rubywm: An X11 window manager in pure Ruby
Much appreciated, I’ll give it a look
nucleogenesis··on Rubywm: An X11 window manager in pure Ruby
Wayland bugs out on my machine so it’s X11 for life (or at least maybe until I get a different GPU or something idk).

But isn’t sway a drop in replacement for i3? Or does it make life easier with some additional functionality or features?

nucleogenesis··on Rubywm: An X11 window manager in pure Ruby
Spoilt for the choice of which wm I want to invest a bunch of time figuring out.

Thanks for the link in any case, I just gotta spend some time one of these weekends getting whatever I end up using working smoothly

nucleogenesis··on Rubywm: An X11 window manager in pure Ruby
Two monitor life is a good life but it’s the part of my i3 config that’s most annoying. I guess idk exactly what I want but I know I don’t want to fiddle and fight with my i3 config lol
nucleogenesis··on Rubywm: An X11 window manager in pure Ruby
I first tried awesomewm the last time I wiped and reinstalled a new Linux and it crashed my X session. I gave it an hour or so and reluctantly went back to i3. Maybe I should give it another look :)

> My tolerance level for weird quirks that I'm in control of is very high, though.

Likewise for me and the idea that I could hack at it in Ruby is making trying it out very tempting. If I test it on multiple monitors I’ll let ya know if it works and if it doesn’t I might try to find time on the weekends to work it out and submit a patch.

I’m basically committed to not using Wayland so it wouldn’t hurt me to learn more about how X11 actually works lol.

Thanks for your thorough and thoughtful reply!

nucleogenesis··on California law enforcement misused state databases more than 7k times in 2023
Plenty of law enforcement agencies aren’t too different from criminal organizations as-is.

LA Sheriff in particular is known to have several criminal gangs within their ranks.

nucleogenesis··on Sixos: A nix OS without systemd [video]
Is the XBPS thing kinda like BSD ports?
nucleogenesis··on Rubywm: An X11 window manager in pure Ruby
This looks rad - I’m getting grumpy at i3 so I’d love to replace it.

Have you used it with multiple monitors by chance?

Thanks for sharing!

nucleogenesis··on US Will Ban Cancer-Linked Red Dye No. 3 in Cereal and Other Foods
Idk I think there is a ton of overlap between industry and the highest levels of government. They wouldn’t want pesky things like human well-being to get in the way of profit so they get their hands on some of the levers of power and mitigate their liability one way or the other. It’d probably take a class action lawsuit in the kind of case you describe to be brought to justice.
nucleogenesis··on Allstate used GasBuddy and other apps to track driving behavior: lawsuit
> Assuming pedestrian and children’s safety is a priority.

It really isn’t a priority (in the US anyhow) otherwise we’d have far more and far better public transportation.

nucleogenesis··on In the belly of the MrBeast
I suspect they’re using the second definition of the word (per Google):

PHILOSOPHY (of an ideology or discourse) bring into being or give identity to (an individual or category).

—-

I read it as saying the audience and their reaction to the content is what gives the “creator” their identity.

nucleogenesis··on An Overview of Datalog (2010)
Datalog is rad and has some neat ergonomics. It’s not so much a need as a want kind of thing. It’s definitely worth looking into.

I’ve only ever seen it used in Clojure(Script) projects although there’s support in other languages too.

nucleogenesis··on Who is filing thousands of disability lawsuits against businesses?
Right and it’s the responsibility of a webmaster to use those tools OSs and browsers provide to make accessible apps.

Semantic HTML with good useful labels goes a huge way. It’s not that complicated… unless you’re using a bunch of bulky front end scripts that clobber the native accessibility features.

Also, screen readers in particular have not historically been the purview of OSs at that level, hence the several different proprietary programs that help people interface with their computer. Apple products from what I’ve heard are an exception though

nucleogenesis··on Who is filing thousands of disability lawsuits against businesses?
It’s not really that hard to make a website sufficiently accessible. It costs money and time, but so do ramps. A business owner in the US should be well aware of their obligations to the public.

> Sorry but life isn’t always fair and everyone has difficulties.

The difficulties “everyone has” kind of pale in comparison to things like not being able to see well or at all, having limited motor skills, not being able to walk… etc

It’s fundamentally dehumanizing to suggest that disabled people don’t deserve to be given the things they need to live as equitable a life as possible. They’re people, they deserve to be able to interact with our society in whatever way best meets their needs whether that be by requiring elevators in tall buildings, ramps along with every set of exterior stairs, or that you build your public business’ website so that everybody who uses the web can access it by way of screen reader.

nucleogenesis··on Who is filing thousands of disability lawsuits against businesses?
I get that blind people don’t ride electric bikes and a lawsuit is out of line for sure when a friendly “hey your site is inaccessible to people with disabilities” might suffice.

But maybe folks should just make their sites accessible.

Blind people aren’t the only people who use assistive technologies and the ADA exists for a good reason. Install an a11y grading browser extension and see just how many sites are virtually inaccessible to disabled people for all the evidence you need to see how people with disabilities will so often not be treated equitably.

> I’ve never seen anybody use a GUI in a clever way. Ever.

Idk man back in the day I saw some folks working Photoshop and Illustrator like they were playing an instrument.

nucleogenesis··on Costco is building out an ad business using its shoppers' data
I’ve heard anecdotes about Costco’s leadership being principled, especially relative to what you’d expect from corporate execs.

I may be misremembering but iirc during a call with investors they were asked why they hadn’t been raising prices like everyone else is and the response was basically “because we don’t need to, so we won’t screw people over just because we can”.

nucleogenesis··on Ask HN: What non-AI products are you working on?
Just played with this a bit and it seems like exactly what I’ve been wanting. Can’t wait to try it at work tomorrow. Thanks for this!
nucleogenesis··on American Ornithological Society changing the names of birds named after people
It’s not erasing scientists or history. The article notes that some birds are just named after benefactors or friends or whatever the namer-of-the-bird at the time was. Things that are inherently untreated to the bird species itself.

The move isn’t about rejecting our white supremacist history - it’s about giving things names that are informative and meaningful with regard to the bird itself. The article explains this pretty well with several examples.

The white supremacy angle comes from the consideration that a bird that was known very well across indigenous generations as one name was decidedly named something like “John Smith’s Warbler” because John Smith “discovered” the bird and that’s what has been codefied. Meanwhile native knowledge of the same species was deliberately wiped from history by way of forced assimilation and genocide. The white supremacy bit being that whatever the predominately white folks learned or knew of a species superseded what the people who’d lived there for generations had known about the species.

nucleogenesis··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
Coming from web dev to Godot was a bit wonky for me and digging into some Godot dev patterns on YouTube and elsewhere went a long way to help me wrap my head around the question of like… “where does this logic/state/etc live and how do I access/use it where I need it?”
nucleogenesis··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
I’ve been thinking about this a bit and the main concern I’ve had is around accessibility. The web has had a lot of iteration over time to make it relatively easy to build applications that are well suited for use with screen readers and other assistive technologies. Have you done any testing along those lines with the Godot UI tools?
nucleogenesis··on Will AI obliterate the rule of law?
IANAL but a quote from a Cornell article says

> The five fundamental rights that the bill gives to copyright owners—the exclusive rights of reproduction, adaptation, publication, performance, and display—are stated generally in section 106.

Seems it can be argued that generative AI violates many of these rights. Again I’m not a lawyer so I’m sure there’s some historic legal stuff that impacts the interpretation - but taking a copyrighted work and allowing a neural network to adapt it in any way seems like a clear violation?

nucleogenesis··on Linux maintainer rejects patches from sanctioned Russian Baikal Electronics
I would suggest that when the fundamental difference is whether you materially support atrocities and war crimes or not then there should be no possible venue for civil and professional interaction.
nucleogenesis··on Rovio delists original Angry Birds from PlayStore because it's still too popular
I have no idea how financially successful they are but the game Dawncaster is great and seems to be faring well.

$5 up front, $5 for each expansion (currently 2) which add a substantial amount of content each.

The devs are active, patching regularly, and planning another content update this year. They just released a free new mode to the game as well.

No ads, no microtransactions just a fun and complete game with lots of replay value - I hope they can sustain it over time

nucleogenesis··on A Black Professor Trapped in Anti-Racist Hell
I think the students in this particular instance were repeating something they heard without any of the context or reasoning behind it.

It’s not that objective facts are always the tool of white supremacy - but rather that facts on their own can be used to reinforce white supremacist culture.

Right-wing media folks can point to a fact about black people being convicted of violent crimes at a higher rate than others in a way that carries the implication (or sometimes explicit point) that the black people or their culture must be the cause.

The idea is that this is a gross oversimplification and eschews many important factors about US history a la slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, etc that have disproportionally affected black communities which has caused generational poverty.

So just saying some fact uncritically is often a tool used by white supremacists (and others in countless contexts).

I’m mostly just responding because this lunacy isn’t what people who have studied and wrote about this extensively (such as the author) espouse - or at least it’s a massive oversimplification

nucleogenesis··on The Google search I made a minute ago
Kagi has features to allow you to set some parameters around your searches like setting certain sites as favored or less common in your searches. There’s a bunch there I’ve never used but I’m guessing that’s what the CTA is referring to (might be wrong though)
nucleogenesis··on PG&E CEO rakes in over 190 times the typical employee salary
PG&E is a for-profit company where the state determines the maximum they can charge for utilities.

They make their money by building and owning infrastructure (or some other fuckery I forget the specifics)
