ntsplnkv2··on Amazon shortchanged drivers $61.7M in tips
You shouldn't be downvoted. A lot of people make a lot of money off of tips. Does that translate to most? No, but this incentivizes many people to be pro-tip.
ntsplnkv2··on How normal people deployed facial recognition on Capitol Hill protesters
I didn't say it was, in fact, I stated that it wasn't, and showed the example. However the scale of BLM far dwarfed the scale of the failed insurrection - it is much less monolithic, and has much less central leadership.
ntsplnkv2··on Product Manager vs. Product Marketing Manager vs. Product Owner
A lot of developers think that way, just like everyone else in their jobs, thinking they could do it better.

When they realize it's more soft skill oriented, endless meetings, power point deck after power point deck, stakeholder after stakeholder, and 1 hour left to code, they finally get the picture.

I was once that developer, thinking I knew what was best for everything. I scoffed at management and project managers. Now I know the real truth - their job is way harder than it seems.

ntsplnkv2··on How normal people deployed facial recognition on Capitol Hill protesters
It's not a monolith like the capitol insurrection was and you're conflating the riots with the protests when they are two different things.

When the protestors were outside hearing the president speak it was a protest. When they tried to storm the capitol it was an insurrection.

There are clear, easy lines to be drawn. People don't draw these lines though because they want to further their political agenda.

ntsplnkv2··on Product Manager vs. Product Marketing Manager vs. Product Owner
A product manager is like a category manager in supply chain. It's not a people management position.
ntsplnkv2··on Product Manager vs. Product Marketing Manager vs. Product Owner
Yep.

This all sounds nice, but developers/designers rarely want to do PM work. The PM position is as much a creation of developers who don't want to interact as it is management.

Even developers that do don't want to spend all day in meetings. A PM can help there.

ntsplnkv2··on A 25-Year-Old Bet Comes Due: Has Tech Destroyed Society?
That's a pretty confident position to take. Really war could be all around us. If climate change continues unabated, large swaths of the earth will no longer be able to produce food. Hot temperatures will cause mass migration (we're already seeing this, see Syria). Billions of people, unable to be fed - desperation - war.

> We need another approach, one that puts us on a path to prosperity and sustained growth as a species. Everyone could have an amazing life, we really just need people to work on improving distribution of goods/services.

People in the US literally refuse to wear masks to protect others around them. Do you really think this is possible?

ntsplnkv2··on A 25-Year-Old Bet Comes Due: Has Tech Destroyed Society?
This is very true, but you also don't need a machine gun to wage war. It's just far more efficient at killing people than your homemade bow and arrow.
ntsplnkv2··on A 25-Year-Old Bet Comes Due: Has Tech Destroyed Society?
The anxiety from modernity hits different today. We are bombarded with the most realistic forms of imagery ever in human history. What was once a black and white picture in a magazine is now a video in HD.

50-60 years ago you weren't constantly bombarding yourself with people who have more than you. Today, people go on instagram and see the rich living the dreams they'll never be able to attain, despite being told they could do anything in school and by their parents. People watch porn which shows insanely attractive people doing any fantasy imaginable, with no effort on their part.

Their regular lives will never compare with that, they get depressed and anxious seeing how they are nowhere near these people. And then this leads to anger and eventually populism, and it'll eventually lead to war.

ntsplnkv2··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
Thanks for sharing.

Can you only play select games in the subscription? Do they ever get removed?

I'm just trying to see why it is struggling. It seems like a great concept

ntsplnkv2··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
I just don't see the value add of stadia. Can someone explain? Why would a gamer choose it over a PS5 or Xbox?
ntsplnkv2··on Ford, Google form 'strategic partnership' on cloud services, Android
Maps on AC is a game changer for me. Anytime I've never been to a place I use it, and I sometimes use it for other things like if I'm in an unfamiliar place and want to stop for food or find a store. Simple voice command. New route, done. Also the real time traffic updates is huge - so many times now I check just in case there is an accident that will cause a huge delay.

I do agree that for car functions I like physical knobs, but for infotainment? being able to say "hey siri play X" is awesome.

> There's no need to view, listen to, or reply to messages while you're driving. It's dangerous, even hands-free. You shouldn't even be having voice conversations while driving. Sure, we all do it from time to time, but it should be rare and under exceptional circumstances. It's dangerous and unnecessary. Pay attention to the damn road.

You know people are going to do it, so it should be made less dangerous, no?

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
This isn't how life works.

If spoiler work fails instantly you can say it wasn't done properly, which is true. You then withhold payment, or sue.

Not that complicated. Not worth a damn novel post from you either.

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
That's your fault for buying it then. If you don't state what you want in a contract, this will always happen.

All you SV elitists do it, you just want to hoard the wealth for yourselves. It's not just deloitte, all the SVs do the same damn thing.

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
If they didn't deliver a functioning website as per the CDCs requirements they shouldn't have been paid.

If the CDC signed off on it, it isn't deloitte's fault. Sorry.

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
They didn't meet the deliverable so they shouldn't be paid.

This isn't rocket science. Think.

ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
Not really, the charge times are really slow compared to a gas fill up, and you won't be able to fullycharge.
ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
I care about climate change but electric cars are too expensive.

The poor always suffer. Rich people will buy endless junk but since they can afford a tesla they think they're doing something

ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
People have been driving gas cars for years. We're doing just fine.

Sorry we can't afford luxury electric cars like the rich SV people on here

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
The bare minimum is the deliverable. If it's "a working website that does X, Y, Z" and they deliver that, what is the problem? That's what was asked for.

> thinking about the customer, understanding the right technologies, designing for scale, etc.

If they were asked to design something for a customer then they're fulfilling what is asked - e.g., the bare minimum.

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
You're right, we should just expect free work from all developers. Because if you want to be a good developer, you have to meet this imaginary bar made up by other developers who want to show off about how "much extra work we do."

The point is the ask for the 737 Max wasn't a "plane that doesn't work." It was for a plane that does work. That was the deliverable. It wasn't met. That is not doing the bare minimum.

ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
EV cars will get there and so too the infrastructure but it isn't there yet.

Americans like big vehicles. This is solely lacking in the electric department. Americans also like convenience - no matter how many ways you try to slice and dice the argument it's less convenient right now.

When EVs get bigger (more utility) and have longer charge and shorter charging time, they will take off. It just isn't there yet.

ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
This is where the stats people taking over is bad for society.

Yea that's their commute - what about soccer practice, the gym, the store, visiting grandma, etc. It's unrealistic to say "welp 32 a day we're good."

ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
Or I can just use gas, and not have to worry about it.
ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
It's another thing to think about though.

If you need gas it's 5 minutes. if you need emergency electric charge, well, you're screwed.

ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
Get a used toyota corolla. It'll last for hundreds of thousands of miles with minimal issues if you maintain it (oil change, brakes, etc.) At the cost you'll pay, even if it does break down, it'll still be far, far less than the cheapest electric vehicles.
ntsplnkv2··on Electric cars are coming fast – is the nation’s grid up to it?
We need third party data, Tesla has incentive to fudge those numbers.
ntsplnkv2··on Love and Death: “Quality of life” calculations leave out much that matters
> but please do not push this attitude as the “morally right one” unto everyone else.

I will push whatever I want to, thank you. Insurance is supposed to provide healthcare. It isn't supposed to judge what is a good life. I shouldn't have to pay extra for care that I was always paying for because you're mad your rates went up. Don't like it, don't buy the care. Ridiculous assumption to let society decide when people should live and die.

It's also unnecessary to. On the populations we are talking about, individual cases like people living long on chemo in miserable lives to die are counteracted by people who died way younger. It's easy to calculate the risk and spread that among insurance holders.

ntsplnkv2··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
They're getting paid for a deliverable. Why do you expect free work?
ntsplnkv2··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
I hope you're right - I truly believe that post 2012 social media has been a cancer on society, in addition to the 24/7 newscycle. But I somehow am not as optimistic as you are. People far underestimate the power of twitter/fb/youtube.

The power in those sites is that they are not siloed and at scale, meaning you can reach a much broader audience. Parler would never be able to influence the mass market because it was so specialized - making it ineffective at evangelization. WSB would never be what it is without the platform of reddit. Going to a small specific site will not have the same power, even though I think it is better to host your own hardware and do that.
