nthingtohide··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Supply chains still originate outside US.
nthingtohide··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
There are secondary tariffs on those countries who buy from Russia and Venezuela or Iran. i.e. if you buy oil from Venezuela, then your export of clothing will invite 25% tarrifs.

US is good at bits and bytes but not in actual atoms i.e. manufacturing. That role has been outsourced to China. Without real manufacturing in control of US, it is beholden to what China says which is bad for American empire and its power projection.
nthingtohide··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
This is very telling. The American Empire didn't even work for Americans. Who really benefitted? Just the Elites? Why should common people care about propping up an empire if the people in power don't bother about them. For context, read this thread.

I heard the term "bail-ins" used in this context. i.e. the elites will have to suffer the devaluation.
nthingtohide··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Doesn't Europe and Japan have dollar swap lines with US? So ultimately it is US buying its own bonds through Japan to create an illusion that there exists enough external demand.

This whole thread is gold. People just casually discussing why it is necessary for America to enslave the world AND it is beneficial for the world. The color revolutions were successful in other countries until the DeepState decided to bring that "social engineering technology" to home. Somehow people think they can contain such moral corruption just as plasma is contained using electromagnetic coils in fusion reactors.

I have a theory. If most of the heavy lifting in your thesis is done by words like "right", "accurate", "correct planning", "right outlook", then you lack details and proper analysis. I have found this to be issue too many times to count. I am sure many others might have noticed this as well.

A filmmaker discusses their experience with Amazon, who bought the rights to their movie and decided to release it on their streaming service instead of in theaters. The filmmaker explains why they feel this is unfair and why they are fighting for their movie to be seen on the big screen.

After Daniel Kanheman gave a ted talk on this, I deliberately try to prioritise my experiencing self.

nthingtohide··on Tracing the thoughts of a large language model
Yes, but our methods of understanding either brain or particle collisions is still outside in. We figure out the functional mapping between input and output. We don't know these systems inside out. E.g. in particle collisions (scattering amplitude calculations), are the particle actually performing the Feynman diagrams summmation?

PS: I mentioned in another comment that AI can pretend to be strategically jailbroken to achieve its objectives. One way to counter this is to have N copies of the same model running and take Majority voting of the output.

nthingtohide··on Tracing the thoughts of a large language model
AI safety has a circular vulnerability: the system tasked with generating content also enforces its own restrictions. An AI could potentially feign compliance while secretly pursuing hidden goals, pretending to be "jailbroken" when convenient. Since we rely on AI to self-monitor, detecting genuine versus simulated compliance becomes nearly impossible. This self-referential guardianship creates a fundamental trust problem in AI safety.

> we’ve built systems so complex we no longer fully understand them.

I see three systems which share the blackhole horizon problem.

We don't know what happens behind the blackhole horizon.

We don't know what happens at the exact moment of particle collisions.

We don't know what is going inside AI's working mechanisms.

nthingtohide··on Teaching a new way to prevent outages at Google
We have sensible reasons to suggest this in both the cases : simple and complex.

If GCP is composed of 10-30 services (hypothetically) then keeping 5-10 employees whose job is ensure mega deletes are safe is not too much of a cost.

If GCP is composed of 500 services, then it is all the more important to have humans in the loop so ensure correct behaviour so that complex interacting services don't take a wrong action.

nthingtohide··on Teaching a new way to prevent outages at Google
All mega deletes should be authorised. A human person should type in the word "delete" and then only the action should take place. Not doing this is like the decision is taken by VOID created by complex interacting systems.

Reminds me of this Turkish artist Refik Anadol

https://refikanadol.com/works/bosphorus/

Bosphorus is a data sculpture inspired by high frequency radar data collections of Marmara Sea provided by Turkish State Meteorological Service in every 30 minutes intervals. The data collection of 30 days long sea surface activity transformed into a poetic experience and visualized on a 12 meters by 3 meters long LED media wall. The art work exhibited at Pilevneli Gallery on 11th of December, 2018 – 27th of January, 2019 in Istanbul, Turkey.
