nromiun··on PlanetScale Offering $5 Databases
Why are you pretending like Planetscale is the only database provider? There are a large number of db/web providers (even free ones like GCP, Neon, Supabase etc) between using Planetscale and hosting your own server.
nromiun··on PlanetScale Offering $5 Databases
So? Maybe don't offer a free tier if you can't sustain it? And many other providers (like Neon, Koyeb, Supabase etc) still offer a free tier. Personally I don't like this type of bait and switch. If you can't sustain something don't offer it in the first place. Same with open source projects going closed source for money after getting free work from open source programmers.
nromiun··on From VS Code to Helix
Yeah, the docs show different keys combination, like `jk` or `jh` etc (even with the bug described in the issue). You can't use the same key like I am used to (just `jj`), because there is no timeout between characters.
nromiun··on From VS Code to Helix
Helix's features look very cool, but I could not switch to it because of this bug [0]. It has been open since May 2022 and it is still not fixed. Basically you can't exit insert mode with a key combination like `jk`. Four years feels like a long time for such a basic bug. I will stick to NeoVim for now.

nromiun··on Thoughts on Cloudflare
That's like saying your cloud providers are stealing and looking at all your code. Technically you might be right but it is still somewhat disingenuous.

Not to mention all the alternatives are doing MITM anyway. So why single out Cloudflare?

nromiun··on Tuning async IO in PostgreSQL 18
The article explains this:

> The default is io_method = worker. We did consider defaulting both to sync or io_uring, but I think worker is the right choice. It’s actually “asynchronous”, and it’s available everywhere (because it’s our implementation).

I think a pool of workers is a sensible default. Many environments disable io_uring for security reasons anyway.

nromiun··on Thoughts on Cloudflare
I actually looked at all the alternatives listed by the author. Here is the problem: none of them are competitive with Cloudflare. With Cloudflare you don't even need to provide a credit card, just setup with your website and it is "free" for lifetime.

They might pressure you to switch to paid plans if you start getting PBs of traffic, but until that point they will deliver your content for free. It is a huge advantage. Specially when you consider the egress pricing of major cloud providers.

nromiun··on Yt-dlp: Upcoming new requirements for YouTube downloads
TIL that you can run frontend Javascript with a package like Deno. I thought you need a proper headless browser for it.
nromiun··on My game's server is blocked in Spain whenever there's a football match on
You could only say that if the IP address list was given by the court to the ISPs.
nromiun··on My game's server is blocked in Spain whenever there's a football match on
That is wild. Which other country gives a private body the power to ban any IP address for the entire country?
nromiun··on Top Programming Languages 2025
Why are you verbosely repeating my own replies? You asked why, I told you a theory that MAYBE because they were trained on Python code. You do know that's how a LLM or even a simple neural network works right?

Of course it is an over-simplification. Should I do an empirical scientific study before I can reply that MAYBE LLMs seem to prefer Python? I was talking from my own personal experience.

Are you using a LLM to write your replies? Because they seem very odd to me.

nromiun··on Top Programming Languages 2025
Maybe it was because LLMs were trained most on Python code, but yes they seem to prefer it.
nromiun··on Top Programming Languages 2025
Anything short of a big AI winter is not going to move Python from its top spot. As Python has become the first choice of output code for LLMs its dominance is only going to grow.
nromiun··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
Ironic considering that we are talking about Western sanctions.
nromiun··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
Sure. Still does not justify what Israel is doing in Gaza.
nromiun··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
> Don't immediately go screaming from the roof-tops. That behaviour is entitled, immature, insincere and unproductive.

Nobody is screaming here except for you.

nromiun··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
Sorry to have to say this, but you don't have the authority to define what is and what is not constructive feedback. Polite, well written blogs like this are accepted by all people as constructive feedback.
nromiun··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
When the inside channels set up by the project gaslight people into thinking there is no problem at all I think it is more appropriate to use blogs, where you have complete freedom to say what you want.

Also, blogs have been used since forever to give constructive feedback to other projects, even other programming languages. So I don't understand why it is suddenly not okey for the Zig project.

nromiun··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
Maybe for some people. But most people are not jerks and you can absolutely limit yourself to dealing with them only.
nromiun··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
Why is this counter-productive and self promotion? Does that mean we should all stop writing programming related blog posts? And move all the discussions into GitHub issues only?
nromiun··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
Just because a popular project leader is a jerk does not mean the way to success is to be a jerk too.
nromiun··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
They do not. The CPUs are only there to support and push data to the GPUs. Much like Nvidia GH200 systems. Nobody buys these APU chips for their CPU parts.

For comparison there are 9,988,224 GPU compute units in El Capitan and only 1,051,392 CPU cores. Roughly one CPU core to push data to 10 GPU CUs.

nromiun··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
There is a reason all the big supercomputers have started using GPUs in the last decade. They are much more efficient. If you want 32bit parallel performance just buy some consumer GPUs and hook them up. If you need 64bit buy some prosumer GPUs like the RTX 6000 Pro and you are done.

Nobody is really building CPU clusters these days.

nromiun··on Shai-Hulud malware attack: Tinycolor and over 40 NPM packages compromised
Unnecessary? Maybe if more people had commented on JS devs tendency to include every 3 line micro packages in existence we would not be in this situation.

Every ecosystem has this problem but NPM is the undisputed leader if you count all attacks.

nromiun··on Shai-Hulud malware attack: Tinycolor and over 40 NPM packages compromised
Not to the same extent as NPM. Because Python has a good standard library and library authors are not deathly afraid of code duplication like JS devs, for example micro libraries like left-pad, is-even etc.
nromiun··on Public static void main(String[] args) is dead
What? When did that go away? What is the alternative?
nromiun··on Geedge and MESA leak: Analyzing the great firewall’s largest document leak
There is a big difference between a firewall on a private network and another on an entire country's traffic.
nromiun··on Geedge and MESA leak: Analyzing the great firewall’s largest document leak
AFAIK QUIC traffic is impossible to attack using MITM techniques. So I wonder how the GFW handles it. Do they block it entirely or still filter it somehow?
nromiun··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
Turns out trade wars are not that easy to win.
nromiun··on NPM debug and chalk packages compromised
The code is 813 lines [0]. Not saying everyone should use it but these two are not directly comparable.
