nroets··on Why Wikipedia cannot claim the Earth is not flat
Rather ask if Wikipedia can claim that human activity is causing climate change:

nroets··on The World Trade Center under construction through photos, 1966-1979
The Wikipedia article hints that it went through the courts. Probably the only legally recognised rights were of the property (real estate) owners and those rights didn't include using the sidewalk as a display area and blasting out announcements on loudspeakers.

So $30,000 in 1962 was probably very generous, but these business owners held the WTC project ransom by demanding unreasonable payouts.

The wikipedia article mentioned that it went to court.

It's not about looks but efficient use of land: Manhattan was (and still is) the financial capital of the world. It had the most valuable real estate in the world. Radio Row was a poor use of real estate.

Before the Chinese traded electronics in Shenzhen, they traded it in Hong Kong. Yes, as Hong Kong transformed into a financial center, it got rid of the electronics traders.

nroets··on Circular Financing: Does Nvidia's $110B Bet Echo the Telecom Bubble?
Changes in the legislative landscaped may have influenced the timing of the price war and the telecoms bubble.

But the price war was inevitable. And the telecoms bubble was highly likely in any case.

Telecoms investment was a response to crazy valuations of dot-com stocks.

1. When Trump lost to Biden, many Republicans including Mike Pence certified Biden's win as prescribed by the constitution.

2. Trump knows the military will not participate in a coup.

3. Trump will not run for a third term. If he does, he will loose because Americans knows it's unconstitutional.

So Americans know that all the dirty laundry will come out when the next president takes office.

Unless the OEMs bundle numerous changes with the security patch(es).

(I'm not saying it happens. I just theorise how the policy could have been envisaged)

nroets··on SpaceX's giant Starship Mars rocket nails critical 10th test flight
With one company being so far ahead is actually a good thing: No tragedy of the Commons. Or reckless gambling on unproven technology.
nroets··on How well does the money laundering control system work?
No, some financial institutions like Binance only allows clients to get statements for the last year or so. P2P transaction details go back only a couple of months.

Sometimes your employer goes out of business. Employees do not always preserve their payslips.

Then there are countries like Georgia, it's culturally acceptable to buy real estate with cash. If no valuation of the property was made, it becomes very difficult to prove where the money came from.

nroets··on Flipper Zero dark web firmware bypasses rolling code security
Correct. While the original KeeLog cipher is most likely no longer secure, Microchip moved on to AES.

KeeLoq is also used for garage door openers.

Some KeeLoq receivers have a "learning mode" where it adds the next KeeLoq transmitter it hears provided it uses the same manufacturer key.

Learn mode is activated either with a button often on the PCB or with a "master" transmitter.

nroets··on Cerebras launches Qwen3-235B, achieving 1.5k tokens per second
1500 tokens/s is 5.4 million per hour. According to the document it costs $1.20 x 5.4 = $6.48 per hour.

Which is not enough to even pay the interest on one $3m chip.

What am I missing here ?

nroets··on NYPD bypassed facial recognition ban to ID pro-Palestinian student protester
The article says he was suspected of hate crime assault. Then the police has a duty to act.

Edit: While I said "duty" I meant that I really hope the that the police investigate all allegations of hate crime assault properly.

nroets··on Tariffs in American History
This link explains it better. And it proves my point: VAT on capital goods (in this case helmets) bought by VAT registered businesses are effectively refunded in full.

https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/taxation/vat/vat-direc...

nroets··on Tariffs in American History
Yes, VAT is levied on the sale of the tank by it's manufacturer. But the distiller can claim back that VAT. This continues up the value chain except for the consumer who is not allowed the claim back VAT.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value-added_tax

nroets··on Tariffs in American History
VAT only reduces consumption. Income tax also reduces investment.

For example, if a distiller buys a tank, income tax is immediately paid. But VAT only generates revenue many years later for the country when the beverage leaves the store. So it's really a consumption tax.

nroets··on Diary: J. M. Coetzee, (1) Mother Tongue
"suddenly powerless Anglo minority". That's just factually incorrect when you look at who controlled the businesses in South African at that stage: Many prominent blue blooded Englishmen. And also Oppenheimers and Ackersmans who were of Jewish decent but identified as Anglo.

Anglo schools and universities thrived.

Englishmen could vote etc.

You may be right e.g. SETI now requiring more RAM than it found in consumer computers.

Also likely that seti@home was killed due to bandwith cost making it uneconomical[1]. After all they were looking for aliens in the data.

This "gridbach" project is much closer to GIMPS.

[1]: even if seti@home got their server bandwidth for free, they also need to factor in the bandwidth cost of their "home" participants.

nroets··on Google is winning on every AI front

nroets··on AI 2027
Corporations would prefer lower corporate tax.

US corporate tax rates are actually every high. Partly due to the US having almost no consumption tax. EU members have VAT etc.

nroets··on AI 2027
When people have more money, they tend to buy larger cars that they drive further. Flying is also a luxury.

So corporations are involved in the sense that they pay people more than a living wage.

nroets··on AI 2027
The oil companies are saying their product is vital to the economy and they are not wrong. How else will we get food from the farms to the store ? Ambulances to the hospitals ? And many, many other things.

Taxes are the best way to change behaviour (smaller cars driving less. Less flying etc). So government and the people who vote for them is to blame.

nroets··on AI 2027
I fail to see how corporations are responsible for the climate crisis: Politicians won't tax gas because they'll get voted out.

We know that Trump is not captured by corporations because his trade policies are terrible.

If anything, social media is the evil that's destroying the political center: Americans are no longer reading mainstream newspapers or watching mainstream TV news.

The EU is saying the elections in Romania was manipulated through manipulation of TikTok accounts and media.

nroets··on US accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian prison, can't get him back
1933 isn't what the Nazis were known for. Many countries had coups or abandoned democracy or rule of law.

Calling someone a Nazi is saying he's a mass murderer. Don't cry wolf!

nroets··on US accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian prison, can't get him back
Please go read up what happened outside Krakow, Poland in the 1940s. I did. I actually visited.

Trump is still very very far away from that.

Assuming this man is innocent, we should rather blame El Salvador for actually imprisoning him.
